Hi everyone Have spent the last 3 days relaxing in Kununurra..we cannot believe the changes since we were here 4 years ago. Weather is absolutely gorgeous.. around 27c during the day with magnificent blue skies with temperature dropping down to 22c in the evening. Have spent pleasant evenings joining the other campers cooking dinner in the community kitchen..exchanging travel stories. Visited the Mirima (Hidden Vallley)National Park today..Locals call it the mini "Bungle Bungles".. very beautiful and went down to the Zebra Rock Gallery... this being the only area where Zebra rock is found in the world...quite unique, the rock having a ceiling date of 1200 million years. They make many beauiful things out of this rock including lovely pieces of jewellery. Tomorrow we are heading off to the Gibb River Road with first stop at El Questro ... read more

A sightseeing day today in Kununurra, which meant a bit of a sleep in and time for some porridge for breakfast. First stop was the Zebra Rock Gallery, which was about 9kms out of town. Zebra Rock is a sedimentary rock only found in the Eastern Kimberley, millions of years old, and as the name suggests looks like a zebra. They had some great pieces of work - vases, jewellery, plates, mini Bungle Bungles - and we found a couple of pieces to take home with us. Out the back we were able to go and see the carvers at work on the lathes in their workshop and a very friendly old fellow, who we assumed was the male of the owner couple, demonstrated to us how you could take a piece of the stone and ... read more

Day of mainly driving to Kununurra (pop 6,000) but the largest town on our trip other than Broome ! Left Bungles around 9:30am. No probs getting out on the road, some of the water crossings had dropped a bit from when we went in on Tuesday. Quick drop into the visitor centre on arrival and checked the lookout point at the top of the hill for great view over the area. Distance travelled : 320 kms (5 hours)... read more

Grady flew to Kununurra from Geelong exhausted, so we waited until after Christmas before we ventured through any more sights of Kununurra - and there are many. I have said before that it confuses me when people say they are staying overnight in Kununurra on a trip around Australia. For us, there are so many experiences to have in this small town. Kununurra is surrounded by mountainous red rock and through it runs the majestic Ord River. From the time the early pioneers arrived, it was thought that the Ord River had the potential to service the whole area, much like the Nile in Egypt. With this in mind, the Ord was dammed, creating the largest manmade lake in Australia - Lake Argyle. The town of Kununurra was established in the early 1960s to service the ... read more

It never ceases to amaze me when things are timed perfectly. A one-off introduction to a family from Kununurra (at someone else’s house, mind you) led to a phone call offering their house to housesit over December. Not long after this, Grady received a phone call from a previous client back in Geelong who needed more work done to their house before Christmas and was willing to fly him back at their expense to do it. We were reminded of the verse in Proverbs: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths”. How true this is in our own experience. To add to this, the day we packed up to move was the very day that park ... read more

It's a Sunday so everything was pretty much shut today. We moved caravan site to a 5 star one called Ivanoe Tourist park. The owner guy is very friendly bombing around the park in a golf buggy waving at you as he passes. We drove to the teeny Mirima Nat. Park which although is possibly the smallest Nat. Park ever has quite stunning gorges and views. In the afternoon we had lunch then sat on our very rickety, falling apart Samantha chairs, reading and writing. Later in the day it started to chuck it down luckily the site had a camp kitchen.... read more

Today was a loooong drive- set off at half 9 and didn't get to site till going on 6! Luckily today has had the best scenery and views yet. Beautiful hills and rocky mountains, we kept stopping to take pics, which didn't help the journey time! On our way to Kununurra we stopped off at Wyndham and drove up a steep hill to the Five Rivers lookout. Unfortunately the hill disgruntled Samantha and the noise of bubbling water that we've come to recognise as her display of unhappiness came rumbling from under my seat. We let her calm down before making our way back down the bank and off to Kununurra. Caravan site was closed when we arrived but there was a not saying just to pick a spot and put money in the box, very ... read more

Day 154 - Kununurra We woke early again this morning after a much cooler night so we’re both quite refreshed at last! Today was going to be the day that we headed towards the Bungle Bungles but we’ve not really prepared ourselves so talked last night about staying put for another day. We were up real late what with the Rodeo and catching up with Mum and Dad Howells on Skype. Well done both for sorting out your first bit of un-aided Skype and it was fabulous to talk to you both and catch up with all the family news!! The day starts with a bit of washing, a few updates on the blog and a check on Eurodragster to see how things are going in the last event of the drag racing calendar back home ... read more

Congratulations to The Dogs Bollocks who won the event and are this year's Wild Bunch #1 with Ramraider. Nice going Ed, Gos, Ray, Em, Ben, James and Lisa, what an excellent effort, what a terrific team to be a part of! Heart felt commiserations to Chris, Claire and Mark with Backdraft who had it all sewn up only for it to be taken away with a shot valve out the front of the engine on the Bye run in the semi finals. I don't think we've ever seen Chris just 'stage' the car on a Bye run as he always takes the run so it was just very cruel timing all round. We caught the 1st eliminations on the webcam so here are the pics. Look carefully at the one where nothing appears to be on ... read more

Day 153 - Kununurra There’s a young lad in Tewkesbury who is celebrating his 7th birthday today, can you guess who it is? It’s Charlie Brown! Happy Birthday Charlie and we hope you have a lovely day! We were wide awake this morning at 05:30! That hasn’t happened since we were doing shifts at the old Bristol depot! We jest of course but it’s been a little while since the sun was up that early in the morning over here! The bright sunny morning makes our spot by Lake Kununurra even more beautiful with the birds already singing in the trees and the water monitors just about dragging themselves around for some early morning rays! It’s very peaceful here so we just sit and enjoy it for a while. Today we’re going to take a trip ... read more
