Very quick blog today since most of the day spent travelling. Awoke in Broome to torrenial rain & slight thunder, but luckily cleared up fairly quickly. Was glad that we had gone to Britz the day before and asked them to fix the leak in the pop-top roof !! Prior to refueling & dropping off the truck, we took a drive out to Gantheaume Point at the southern end of Cable Beach to visit the dinosaur foot prints and Anastasia's Pool. The dinosaur foot prints were discovered by some Girl Guides and the real ones, which are 130 million yeears old, can only be seen at a very low tide (the replica ones are there all year round at the top of the cliff). Also whilst out there we went & saw Anastasia's Pool which was ... read more

Our last official full day in the Kimberley, very sadly, but still lots of things to go and see in Broome. The weather forecast was not looking too great with thunderstorms predicted and the sea kayaking trip we'd booked to go on for half the day at Turtle Bay was cancelled. With the weather not looking too hot and after our experience of leaking canvas pop-top in Derby, we headed off to Britz to get them to fix up the small hole in the corner so that, should it rain again tonight, we would not get wet. It was a fairly quick fix with a patch of canvas & some silicone. Then we headed into Chinatown in Broome for a quick look around, lunch and a visit to Sun Picutres. Woke up on Sunday to finally no rain falling (stopped round about 6am !) Great news with the puddles in the campground quickly drying up. Unfortunately the the corner of the pop-top roof did end up leaking during the night but the poly sheet & toilet paper plugs did soak up some of the wet. Prior to leaving we heard from our next door neighbours at the campground & the cleaner, that all side roads & gorges on the Gibb River Road were closed due to the large amount of rain that had fallen over the past 36 hours. Apparently it wasn't the water crossings that were the major issue, but more the fact that some of the side roads were washed out due to the unexpected & unseasonal downpour. We were very lucky that we'd ... read more

Today I'm calling the Buffer Day - as we should only have got into Derby today (we allowed an extra day along the Gibb River Road for travel delays / breakdowns which we didn't end up using, hence into Derby a day earlier than planned yesterday). What a day though !!! The light rain from late yesterday afternoon has not stopped and has been torrential all day. Once we saw the weather we quickly rebooked early in the morning - staying on until tomorrow, waiting for our trip to the Horizontal Waterfalls (thinking optimistically). The campground here is fairly small - only 20 powered sites - and by midday or so loads of caravans & 4WDs towing trailers were arriving (pretty sure it's full now). The rain all day has been pretty awful - the water ... read more

Quick blog for today as its late - just before 11pm - and I've been trying to get all the blog updated since we haven't had any cell phone or internet coverage for 6 days !! Funny old day today... has been overcast all day with no bright sunshine like all other days of the holiday, although still warm (& very humid at Windjana) until early evening in Derby when it has got much coooler (mid 20s). Headed into Windjana Gorge first thing to do the walk alongside the Lennard River that runs through there and do some crocodile spotting. As well as being geologically famous, the gorge is also supposedly one of the best locations in Australia to see freshwater crocodiles. Heading into the gorge we came across a huge wall which clearly showed all ... read more

Made an early start and were on the road by 8:30am, heading back to the Imintji aboriginal store to try & fix the fridge. Luckily they had exactly the required fuses we needed and Grant replaced in the battery so fridge now back in working order. As it was only down overnight most of our food seems fine which is good. Couldn't resist some real coffee either seeing as we were there - so a flat white & a cappucino also went down very well. Back on the road we were headed for the turn off for Windjana Gorge & Tunnel Creek National Parks. The GRR headed over the King Leopold Ranges which made a nice change as there were a couple of good lookouts (middle section of the road had been quite flat with just ... read more

After a peaceful night at the Manning Gorge campsite, we got ready to go and visit the Manning Gorge Falls. This was futile though as at the beginning of the walk there were 2 options :- 1. Swim across the river (approx 150m) 2. Walk around the river and across the creek. However at this time of year the creek was not very empty either and this would also have involved getting quite wet - wading knee deep in weedy murky creek water for about 20m or so. Neither option was that appealing, especially as I'd read in guide books that in swampy creek areas there could be leeches. The swim would have been OK were it not for the fact that you would also need your hiking boots / walking shoes to continue the walk ... read more

A day of mainly travelling further on the Gibb River Road back towards Derby & Broome. The donkey heating system worked perfectly this morning at the campsite at Ellenbrae, even though Grant & I lit it only about 20 mins before having a shower. The water was beautifully warm - just right - with no need to any cold water to it. The road today was mainly in good condition, slightly rutted in places with some corrugations and a few sections with quite a bit of sand and bull dust. We did a detour up to Mt Elizabeth Homestead (approx 30 kms off the road) to check it out but were there by noon, and with not a lot going on up there to fill the afternoon, we decided to carry on further down the road. ... read more

Sadly had to check out of our “luxury” riverside bungalow this morning at El Questro. Took ages to pack up the truck and fit everything back in it again (its like a hard jigsaw puzzle & once you have a system for where everything goes, you need to stick with it, otherwise you will never locate anything again !) Before we left, we decided to do a walk up El Questro gorge which was recommended in both our travel book and by the receptionist at the resort. No-one mentioned though that the Jackaroo Waterhole signposted en route had to be driven through. This turned out to be probably the deepest water crossing yet with the water up to the bullbars and hitting the floor of the truck (we could feel it underneath us). Fortunately it was ... read more
