Another day in relative luxury at the bungalows at El Questro with a lie in until 9am !! Yipee. Whilst we were having brekkie, there was a bit of a commotion in the undergrowth just near our bungalow deck, and next thing we had a Mertens water monitor lizard in very close proximity to us. He was cool and even posed for some photos. Spent the day exploring round the station. In the morning we set off for Zebedee Springs, which were thermal natural hot springs which held a constant temperature of around 32 degrees. The creek was beautiful under very tall palms (the same as what we had seen at the Bungle Bungles) and with other lush vegetation nearby. Some tour groups when we got there initially but they eventually left and for 10 mins ... read more

Relatively long lie in this morning until 6:45am; it seems the Asians next door at the campsite (who we think are fruit pickers) were having a long lie in for a Saturday. Whilst Grant filing up with diesel, I went and had a look at the “Celebrity Tree Park” in town which was opposite the campground. The sign explained that the township of Kununurra ask visiting “celebrities” to plant a tree to honour their visit & symbolising their faith in the future of the town. It was kind of weird but 10 out of 10 for originality. Other than a planting by Baz Luhrman on behalf of the cast of “Australia” and a tree planted by Kate Cebrano (an Aussie Idol winner from a few years ago), all the other plinths beside the trees were of ... read more

A sightseeing day today in Kununurra, which meant a bit of a sleep in and time for some porridge for breakfast. First stop was the Zebra Rock Gallery, which was about 9kms out of town. Zebra Rock is a sedimentary rock only found in the Eastern Kimberley, millions of years old, and as the name suggests looks like a zebra. They had some great pieces of work - vases, jewellery, plates, mini Bungle Bungles - and we found a couple of pieces to take home with us. Out the back we were able to go and see the carvers at work on the lathes in their workshop and a very friendly old fellow, who we assumed was the male of the owner couple, demonstrated to us how you could take a piece of the stone and ... read more

Day of mainly driving to Kununurra (pop 6,000) but the largest town on our trip other than Broome ! Left Bungles around 9:30am. No probs getting out on the road, some of the water crossings had dropped a bit from when we went in on Tuesday. Quick drop into the visitor centre on arrival and checked the lookout point at the top of the hill for great view over the area. Distance travelled : 320 kms (5 hours)... read more

Day 4 Left Halls Creek around 9:30am after stocking up on milk, bread & eggs at the local IGA and hunting down 2 real cappuccinos at the bakery (yes, real ones, not like Scottish pretend ones ! The Halls Creek campground was ok for one night but glad not to have been staying any longer as the facilities were quite grubby & dirty. Offered our friendly German couple neighbours who were on a 4 week holiday driving from Perth to Darwin, our discount voucher book which included a coupon for 10% of helicopter trips to the Bungle Bungles (we already got another voucher). In return 5 mins later we were asked “did we want a 10m roll of alu-foil, that they had spare !” No need for eBay or TradeMe when you are camping. Approx 1 ... read more

Rather uneventful day with more driving on tar seal from Fitzroy Crossing to Halls Creek. Camp site overnight was great - Tarunda Caravan Park - with only 8 other punters besides us. Good, clean facilities - nice grassy area (at least in early May). The old couple next door were towing a caravan from Perth to Darwin accompanied by their tabby cat. Dishwashing was made more fun by my bemusement at seeing our neighbour, walking her cat, Misty, on a lead round the campsite. Had to have a chat... apparently it is not that hard to train a cat to go on a leash and the cat also has its own toilet (with a door) that it uses (so much so that she rarely goes anywhere else). ... “cats are very intelligent you know”... had to ... read more

Our trip has finally started, after getting to Broome yesterday afternoon around 1pm ish. YEE HA. Flight from Sydney took 4.5 hours (should have been 5) but seemed a lot longer as we were squished into relatively small plane (737-800) coupled with domesticity of having to make a shopping list & menu for the first few days of our trip. 4WD is all good - Grant seems happy that it has "a lot of torque" and after driving for some of the way today, I agree that it can definitely move (4.5 litre, V8). So far though it's only had to cope with tar seal - its first test will be in a couple of days time when we take the unsealed turn off to the Bungle Bungles. Highlight of the first night was seeing the ... read more

Well, the final countdown is on... a week to go before we depart Sydney for the Kimberley region of Western Australia. I'm getting excitied.... will we cope 4WD ing on the GIbb River ROad in the mddile of nowhere ? (or as Lara Bingle would say to the rest of the Ockers "where the bloody hell are you ?" I've decided to do a blog as a few people asked me about it and I thought it would also be a good indication to everyone that Grant & I are still alive and haven't been eaten by a crocodile.... It will also prove to Grant that I am no longer a technophobe and have well & truly 21st centurised myself. So check our blog throughout May to see where we've been & (hopefully) check out some ... read more
