Well we are now back in Kununurra after coming back from El Questro. Kununurra is a small fairly modern town which was established in 1960’s in conjunction with the Ord River Scheme. Lots of Blackfellas, but contrary to some towns they kept to themselves mostly. Apart from washing, replenishing supplies and cleaning the caravan we had a lazy Saturday watching the sunset over the lake at our doorstep. Mozzies were plentiful and were a bit savage at dusk. On Sunday we drove the 110kms into the dying town of Wyndham. Most people said don’t bother, but I also wanted to see it because of its significance in ‘Kings in Grass Castles’. Our new friends Bernie and Anne (yes, we are cavorting with the Hares now - if you can’t beat them, join them etc etc) came ... read more

The next leg of the trip north was in a more serious 4WD truck and once over the Fitzroy River and on to the Gibb River Road, you could see it was going to be needed. A new trip and a new group of people in the main - the majority eventually being referred to as Team France. The sealed road ends at the unfortunately named, Derby and then it was on to Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge. It was for many the first sighting of crocs - a good photo opportunity with the freshies, not to be repeated with the salties further north. The Kimberley is apparently the size of Germany, but with a population of only 30,000. However at this time of the year, there were also plenty of the grey nomads on the ... read more

Day 110 Friday 21 July 2006 -Day 112 Sunday 23 July 2006 Kununurra Happy Birthday Kim for Sunday After packing up we had just one more walk to do - Emma Gorge walk which was another goat track. At the end of it was a huge waterhole with lovely waterfalls flowing over it. We were all so hot we wanted to get in but it was absolutely freezing. I was the only one that went fully in. The kids put their feet in and Graeme went in for one second. He reckons that he could have put his beers in it to keep cold. We arrived back from El Questro today because Martin from the UK had arrived in Kununurra the day before and he only had until Sunday morning before he departed on a bus ... read more

Day 109 Tuesday 18 July 2006 - Thursday 20 July 2006 Kununurra to El Questro We had to get up early today because we wanted to get a private campsite on the river in El Questro. We left about 7.30am. El Questro is a beautiful spot. The road is rough getting in but not as bad as the Bungle Bungles. We chose a private riverside campsite called “Kookaburra”. It is pretty expensive to camp here - $30 just for entrance and $30 a night to camp here. No amenities here so it is dig your own hole. This campsite was right on the river and was quite loud at night time to get to sleep. We set up our tent, searched for firewood and then in the afternoon we went for a drive back to the ... read more

Elena got off at Halls Creek at about 5AM, and it was sad seeing the little group of west coast companions finally breaking up. Having said that, I'm pretty sure all our paths will cross in the future, in cyberspace if not the real world. We finally arrived at Kununurra after 13.5 hours on the bus. Ian had been sitting near the driver, who had said that the coach was a McCafferty's one rather than a Greyhound because they absorb kangaroo impacts better - we hit at least 2 on the journey up. We were met by one of the owners of the Kimberley Croc hostel and I immediately got a good vibe about the place after chatting with him and his wife, as well as seeing the kitchen (best one of the trip - everyone ... read more

Day 100 Sunday 10 July 2006 Leycesters Rest to Kununurra Today we drove back to Kununurra to stay for at least a week. We booked into Kimberyland Holiday Park because the kids wanted to stay here because our friends Rod, Naomi, Declan and Zali were here. Also Flynn was here. So the kids out voted us so we booked in. Just setting up for the rest of the day as we had booked in for 7 nights. Day 101 Monday 11 July 2006 - Day 108 Monday 18 July 2006 Kununurra This week we spent looking around the sights of Kununurra. We visited the “Hoochery” which is a rum brewery, looked in the jewellery shops which have on display the wonderful pink Argyle diamonds. Day 82 Thursday 22 June 2006 - Day 86 Monday 26 June 2006 Broome It was to be our last night on our site for 2 weeks but have decided to stay another few days until Tuesday. It is such a lovely spot and the kids have made great friends that we don’t want to leave. The caravan park only takes bookings Friday to Friday so the next morning we had to move sites for 4 nights. Pathetic!! We spent the last few days sunning on the famous Cable beach, going back to Café Carlotta’s for scrumptious Italian and that one last sunset!!! Awesome!! Day 87 Tuesday 27 June 2006 Broome to Derby We were very sad to leave Broome today. We waited until 10 am departure time so we could spend every last minute in ... read more

The next stage of the trip was to Derby and then through to Kununurra. Stayed in Derby three nights went to the races on the Saturday. I had 2 bets for 2 wins - only 4 horses in each race meant they only paid for a win so John did his dough. Good fun afternoon out though!! On the Sunday did a one day trip out to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek a return journey of 390 k’s along the Gibb River Road. Our guide this time was Amina, a tiny little aboriginal woman who was driving the huge 4 WD bus, doing the commentary, setting up lunch, and taking us on the guided walks all on her own. It was her first day driving the new bus so she was very nervous but did a ... read more

The drive from Katherine to Kununurra takes you along 530km of Victoria Highway. Otherwise known as the forgotten highway. If they don’t start repairing it soon it will totally fall apart. Without warning you are faced with a road full of pot holes, some a foot deep. It was a boring drive, made even more annoying by my CD player refusing to play anything. I also caught up with a vehicle that was spraying tar onto the Road. Before I realised what he was doing to front of the car was covered in tar. This took ages of hard scrubbing to get most of it off. All the other state borders that I have crossed have signs saying don't take fruit, veg etc over the border. But in Western Australia you have to stop at a ... read more
