“The journey not the arrival matters”.T.S.Eliot…..had to use this quotation again but it is indeed fitting…what a journey it has been.Arriving on 4th August at the Matswere Gate meant that we were on the last leg of this wonderful wild life experience as this is the northern entrance to the Central Kalahari Game Resereve(CKGR).Effectively our last stop. Now this is no run of the mill game reserve.Ponder on this!It covers an area of 52800 square km’s which puts it in the big league of game reserves. In fact,it is the second largest truly wild game reserve in the World with the largest being in Tanzania. To put it’s size in perspective…it is larger than Denmark.Traversing it’s vast plains are huge numbers of animals, some of which we hadn’t seen yet on this trip. The one absentee is the elephant due to ... read more

“To travel and wander is to discover”.Anon…..running out of travel quotations. So it was with a touch of wanderlust and the addiction of the African bush that we delivered ourselves on the morning of 1st August to one of Africa’s best game reserves…..Moremi.This is about as wild as it gets and our first two nights were spent at South Gate camp site.No fences here so you are living with whatever is out there. For good measure,as we set about deciding where to locate things in yet another camp site routine,we heard the snapping and cracking of breaking trees close by and there they were…..a herd of elephant quietly going about their business of seeking the juicy bits of Mopani trees.Interesting tree this as Moremi is broadly described as a Mopani wooded region which fringes on the southern most ... read more

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home”.James Michener. The addiction is growing with each day and there was once again a sense of wondering what lay ahead as we negotiated the sand and water channels back to the main road to then point vehicles south.Destination Maun. The countryside in this region was desperately dry which was in stark contrast to the highest flood levels seen in 75 years.Trees are somewhat stunted and there are many dead ones that,at some stage, succumbed to the ravages of drought. The little villages we passed had a moonscape look to them with sand and dust being the dominant features. At some point on any journey there is a need for a comfort break. This involves a leg stretch and a cup of that fine instant ... read more

“The journey not the arrival matters” T.S.Eliot(seems he might have been bitten by the travel as well as writing bug?).Now there is always something exhilarating about setting off on a new leg of a journey. There is the element of the unknown, new countryside to cast an eye over and who knows what awaits at the destination. But before getting anywhere in this World there is the little challenge of negotiating border posts. At the Mahembo border post we were effectively leaving Namibia behind and entering Botswana. This is probably the least busy border post anywhere on the planet and probably explains the friendly reception and hassle free stamping of passports and processing of bits of paper we experienced. An observation….the Botswana border posts are an absolute delight. They are clean, efficient and manned by friendly people who are genuinely excited to see people ... read more

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time,to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted”.Bill Bryson. No chance of our taking anything for granted as we left Island View Lodge with heavy hearts. But somehow a new day, direction and destination lifted our spirits as the two vehicles headed west into the Caprivi region of Namibia.Instinctively the radio was flicked on and interestingly some German oompah type song was belting out. This was once upon a time a German colony but the fact that this was Radio Thombela in modern day Namibia…well! To cap it the announcer sprouted away in German. It is fairly well known that the Germans visit Namibia in numbers in search of the sun ... read more

“Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and celebrate the journey”.Fitzburgh Mullon.Well…..we haven’t exactly concerned ourselves about the state of roads for the past two weeks as vehicles have largely been stationery. There has, however, been a tinge of concern and sadness at the fact that our time at Island View Lodge is slowly drawing to an end.The last few evenings reminiscing around the camp fire have touched on the fact that we now only have a few more sleeps and,of course, that big tiger is still out there somewhere. On the subject of fishing, there has been much debate about where these damn tiger have gone temporarily….no answers as yet but to console ourselves we have established that “the best month” to catch the really big buggers is August(funny, never the month that one goes fishing!).So,no surprises here…the trip already in ... read more

“Two of the greatest gifts we can give our children are roots and wings”.Hodding Carter. Thankfully our parents have bestowed these two essential ingredients and being able to travel and spread those wings adds an intriguing dimension to life.Towards the end of last week our numbers swelled by two with the arrival of Charles and Sue Summers.Close friends of the Birketts, they had driven up to the Caprivi from Beira on the Mozambique coast where Charles is Financial Director for one of Tongaat Hulett’s sugar mills.Daily life at Island View Lodge must rank highly in the oft quoted clichéd statement…..”it doesn’t get much better than this”.Firstly, the weather is sublime….warm, windless days with golden sunlight contrasting superbly with silvery water and riverine growth. It does not rain here from April to November so no chance of the weather turning things ... read more

“Let your memories be your travel bag.”Alexander Solzenhitsyn(he was the Russian writer sent to the Gulag by none other than Stalin….not sure about the treasures in his travel bag?). There are many great rivers on this planet and Africa has it’s fair share of these…think no further than the mighty Nile. But,right here on our doorstep is the Zambezi River, which must get at least a top ten ranking.Having done a bit of research here are some key statistics….it is the 4th largest river on the African continent. It’s source is in Zambia and it then flows westward slicing through a corner of Angola before turning east.It then plays out a very important geographical role as it creates borders for Namibia,Zambia,Zimbabwe and Mozambique where it’s force is finally spent as it disgorges into the Indian Ocean. Now the Brits, being the ... read more

“There is no moment of delight in any pilgrimage like the beginning of it.”Charles Learner. It is not about the destination but all about the journey….The remarkable thing about traveling when you have a bit of time on your hands and you aren’t screaming down the N1 trying to break your previous personal best time,is that you start noticing things around you to a far greater degree.Especially when you are in uncharted territory. And so with a sense of adventure the journey kicked off from Mabula Lodge near Bela Bela(Warmbaths)with a westerly heading to Thabazimbi and ultimately Laphalale (Ellisras). This is tough farming country where I guess it’s survivable when they have good rains but a very different scenario when the rains don’t pitch. So what you have is a mix of cattle farming, some winter fodder cropping under irrigation ... read more

Setting up a new travelblog is always a good sign......a flash of some journey and adventure about to commence. This one is not quite as extensive or "exotic" as the big one to Australia in 2009 but, nevertheless,a trip into the Caprivi(Namibia)and then the western reserves of Botswana, somehow gets the pulse racing! The journey effectively starts on Saturday 10th July when the trusty Toyota Fortuner crosses into Botswana at Martin's Drift. No sleeping quarters indoors as was the case with "Washongi" in Australia but hey...this is Africa and the idea is to sleep as close to that carpet of stars as possible. So we have a "Howling Moon" roof top tent straddling the Fortuner roof and providing protection to Susan who has never quite developed much love for some of the creatures of the African bush.....in particular elephants. No shortage of ... read more
