Our trip home took the following route (and for those that have missed it, yes we are home). Carnarvon, Geraldton, Southern Cross, Kalgoorlie, Roadside stop on the Nullabour, Eucla, Ceduna, Cowell, Adelaide. Over 3000km in 9 days ( 2 nights in Kalgoorlie). Out of Carnarvon the weather started to turn. Cold, wet and miserable and did not let up at all. Coldest was Kalgoorlie with 1 degrees at night. Lucky we had a gas heater that got the camper nice and warm, until it stopped working. Apparently with all of the dirt we had been on the heater got a bit of dust in it which clogged the valve. After some much pestering from me, it was bloody cold, Bruce pulled the thing apart and much to my relief got it working. So the rest went ... read more

On our day in Tom Price we did not go very far due to Bruce’s wing being clipped. We went on an organised tour of the Pilbra Iron Ore mine in the town. The town was built around the mine when Iron Ore was discovered back in the 1960’s when a couple of blokes doing a survey flew past in a helicopter and checked out some dark coloured rock formations. The town now has 4,000 residents, plus many fly in fly out contractors working at the mine. It was really interesting hearing about how they find the Iron Ore, then process it and get it on the train to Karatha. Pilbra Iron (a subsidiary of Rio Tinto) supply all the power to the town from their power station at Dampier, have built the railway line, supply ... read more

As we left the coast from our big fishing adventure - less fish, we headed south to the some of the national parks and into Mining Country The first stop was a little known national park called Millstream National Park. The park is quiet small in size. The walks were short, but the one around the rangers station was very interesting as it was told in the eyes of a 12 year old boy that use to live there. There was some great scenery. Some of the ranges (as in mountains and not Park Rangers) had really great colours, but the overcast cloud did not do them justice. One of the ranges looked like ice-cream with chocolate topping dripping down, which in fact was brown rock with white plant life on the lower section. But ... read more

Barn Hill and Eighty Mile Beach for those that need a translation, this is Grey Nomad country! Barn Hill is a station stay accommodation on the beach, about 150ks south of Broome. You travel 10km off the main road and hit the station, then keep driving for a few hundred metres to the camp ground. We thought it would be a nice quiet place to spend a few days and try out the new beaut fishing gear….but….not in this retirement lifetime baby!! There are about 150 caravans here for around 3 months that someone forgot to tell us about - you know who you are! We got a camp site in the un-powered section so it was away from everyone, which was nice enough, although some of the walks to the loos, past the oldies ... read more

It mightn’t be on many maps, but 200ks north of Broome, Cape Leveque is definitely the place to be….. Average day time temperature range is 28-32 degrees with 75% humidity, with night time temps dropping down to a staggering 20 degrees at its coolest night last night. It was cold enough last night for Bruce to put on his jumper and Amanda to go looking for her tracky-daks. God help us when we travel south this Thursday, into sub 20 degree temperatures. As we type this, planes are passing no more than 20 metres over our heads to land at the nearby air strip. Fun watching them land in the wind and much less invasive than the couple shagging all the time at Kununurra Cape Leveque is a bit hard to describe except it is on ... read more

Middle Lagoon is about half way between Broome and Cape Leveque. It has a lagoon (hence the name) that is very sheltered by a reef. Great fishing apparently if you have a boat. The water was very clear, with only the first few feet sandy. Tide went out a long way, as with most of this coast. At low tide you can walk right up to the reef around the other side of the lagoon. There is great swimming in sheltered waters if it was a bit warmer, but nice for a stroll along the beach. Did not hear of many people catching a feed, so we were not the only ones without fish for dinner. We did not do much for the 3 days we were here apart from read books, and go for walks ... read more

Caught up with Amanda’s Mum and Dad in Derby, and have been travelling with them for the last week. Which included travelling to Broome, complete with UHF communication blaring away. Much to our surprise, Amanda’s Mum managed to get us into the Cable Beach Caravan Park. This park has over 400 camp sites, about 70% of them can be booked - seven nights minimum, but the rest are for ‘drive up tourists’ that can only be booked on the day. So about 40km out of Broome we managed to get in for 4 nights, but had to be there within 1 hour otherwise the sites were gone. We then moved sites after a few days so we can now stay as long as we like. Caravan Parks here are busy, but only for 2 months of ... read more

Okay, move along people, nothing to see here! There are not many things to do in Derby, except fishing or crabbing or drinking and well, that’s about it really. “I’d like to lock in B for crabbing thanks Eddie”, and off we went to try our arm at crabbing. We had to buy all the gear (net, bate bag, bate bag hook and some lamb off cuts from the butcher), at a total cost of $15. The crab nets up here are a bit different to those back home, they have to have an open top and lie flat on the bottom with flexible sides, so if you are not watching the crabs can duck in, grab a free feed and escape. We checked out the price of crabs before heading down to see what we ... read more
