Australia. Not so bad when you get off the beaten track! After a fairly shit first few days downunder, it was finally time to go to the ranch. On the coach from Rainbow Beach to Gympie, I got my first real look at some of the Australian landscape. This to me is where the real appeal of the country is, if you come to Australia looking for culture and history, you would be sorely dissapointed. Obviously it is a realatively new nation, but the two-dimensional stereotype of the typical beer swillin', footie lovin' Aussie is scarily accurate !! The real draw is the natural beauty of the landscape, and I should get to see plenty of it working on ranches in the outback... On my arrival in Gympie I was met from the bus and taken ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane » Moreton Bay May 26th 2006

On Wednesday Josh, Sam, and I left Brisbane for the day to go on a tour of Moreton Island. It was amazing. We were the only people booked on the tour so the guide was basically our personal chauffer for the day, brilliant. Moreton Island is the 3rd biggest sand island in the world, and it is pretty spectacular. We started the day off by heading to the dunes and doing some more sand boarding... it was much better than last time, the dunes were bigger, boards were faster and we were allowed to stand up on them as well! We combined with another tour to go down in a pyramid, we got put at the bottom, and basically ate sand all the way down... the tour guides found it hilarious, I looked albino after that ... read more

Okay, so this journal isn't about travelling but it is about a quest and that's close enough, right? A quest.... to find the balloonman within. Every week, Kate's work has a Friday Challenge and every week, the staff take it in turns to organise it. This week, Kate drew the short straw and boy, will they be sorry :P *Kate laughs evilly* Taking inspiration from the "Pointless Bit Of Fun" segment on Friday Night Games (a tv show in Aus that was showing a couple of months ago), Kate's throwing down the gauntlet to her fellow workmates and challenging them to find the balloonman within. The challenge will consist of two parts - the first challenge is to see who can blow up the most balloons in 2 minutes (Note: These are not your ordinary balloons, ... read more

Final stop on my tour of Aus is Cairns. Got 6 nights here before i catch a flight home on Tuesday/Wednesday. Taking it fairly easy whilst i'm here. Today i got myself a sceneic flight over the reef and on up to Port Douglas and back down the coast. About an hours worth of flying which was awesome. Flying as low as 500 feet at times so had some good views of the reef and islands, not to mention to stunning coastline. Pics to follow. Bye.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay May 26th 2006

We arrived in Hervey bay early on Friday morning after taking the night bus from Airlie. I headed to Hervey with Simon, Mike and Ben and we were staying in Hervey until Monday when we were heading to Fraser Island. There isn’t much in Hervey and it’s not really a place for tourists. After checking into the hostel we headed down to the beach and walked along the esplanade. It was really dead and there were only a couple of bars. One bonus was that we only ran into female travelers and after our last couple days on the Tallarock III, Hervey bay was starting to look promising. We sat at a pub and had a jug of beer and we noticed that every car of youths that drove by either stared at us or yelled ... read more

Hola cicos y cicas. Que tal? I am officially sweet! Life has been absolutely amazing over the past few weeks (sorry to rub it in to you guys working in those hot and sweaty offices back home) but it has!! From 1770 we headed to Hervey Bay where we were set to embark on a mini adventure!! Arriving at the hostel we had booked, we were quietly disappointed that we were staying on a Caravan Park- our room was a caravan attached to a solid, room- interesting but was ok for a night! At night we were to watch the FA Cup Final, and due to Stevie G's wonder strike and the penalty shootout, we got about zero sleep (thats a lie- about 4 hrs!). I do believe it was this lack of sleep that caused ... read more

Thursday 25 May. Chilly nights mean bright cloudless days. In Maroochydore a heron with a cloak of grey feathers. Those pterodactyls, the pelicans, one with a meter long fishing line glinting in the sun (caught on foot). I read in the paper a record May low. Minus two in Gimpie. Swim and a schooner at Surf Club. All's well. Stamped another 300 stickers at library. They can't stop me now. Huge piece of fish (plus chips) at harbour ($7). A guy told me an article appeared in The Gold Coast Bulletin with colour photo. That covers the stretch from the border to Brisbane!!! I'm trying to remember the interview.... read more

Yes, we are back in Florida and this is a very dated entry. Last night at dinner, friends inspired me to complete this entry and get it posted. I am unable to download the rest of the photos, but I think there are enough here to call it good. So, going back to April.............. After the heat and humidity in Broome, Noosa was beautiful. Our apartment, on an island canal, was ideal for an extended stay. We began to feel like locals for the 18 days that we stayed there. In addition to walking the beach and hiking in the National Park, we took a 4-wheel drive and boat tour of the Great Sandy National Park. The Great Sandy is the world's largest vegitated land mass. It is a large sand dune island off the coast ... read more
