I've crossed the Tropic of Capricorn, and yes, it's totally tropical man! But anyway, I made it to Airlie Beach, bright and early on Monday morning. I'd bumped into my old mates from 1770 - Andy The Manc and Grandpa (Chris) The Sweed - on the bus which was great cause Andy is a little cutey and the old Manc-bonding got us off to a good start, so I followed them into the hostel they'd booked - Airlie Waterfront Hostel, cheap digs, good views although a bit run-down. The next 3 days were spent out on the piss with various groups: Andy, Grandpa, the Sweedish girls, Jacinta and Gillian the Irish girls, Gemma and Emma from 1770 - I felt truely popular! Leslie from 'Classic Sailing Experience' had rung me several times to worryingly inform me ... read more

Australia is all about animals and the incredible landscape (and drinking, but I don’t drink alone). Since I can only think of so many ways to say the view was incredible, beautiful, amazing, etc, it looks like you are going to read a lot about animals. So here’s another one. Rex is a flying-fox (fruit bat) that visitors to the Bat House in Cape Tribulation may meet. The bat housed is run by a group of volunteers and one flying fox a day is on brought to the house from the nursery for visitors to learn about. The nursery is primarily for injured bats to recover and be released into the wild. The bats that spend the day at the bat house are permanent residents because they can’t be returned to the wild. Rex was orphaned, ... read more

My last night in Cairns was fantastic. I went to the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow...reminded me how much I absolutely love stand up comedy. The following day I got up relatively early to make my way to the train station the other side of the city. Here I boarded the Sunlander which is a train that goes all the way down the east coast to Brisbane, although my ticket was for travel to Townsville...you know, on the map it only looks a small way down, but no...7 hours on the train! I was so glad the seats were comfy, and reclined a good way back. So yes, my journey consisted of sleeping, eating my packed lunch, sleeping, gazing out the window, listening to music, sleeping, and finishing my latest book Da Vinci Code...I couldn't put it ... read more

Cody and i met up with dorothy ( a friend from high school). As you read in the title we went to the great barrier reef. It was a day trip and i can safely say i had a terrible time. I puked 3 times because i was extremely sea sick. When we got to the reef an anchor line got wrapped around the propeller so we had to wait around for them to untangle it before we could go in the water. About 10 mintues after being in the water i got stung by a jelly fish, my had was red and swollen. It hurt so bad so i decided to swim back to the boat to get some spray. on the way back to the boat cody saw another jellyfish by me so he ... read more

As you can see, I am now in Brisbane having followed exactly the same tourist trail as everyone else (specifically Sydney- Byron Bay- Surfers Paradise- Brisbane) and getting a little bit tired of meeting other English people on fairly nice beaches. I mean, I could go to Spain for that for peanuts. I'm currently looking for obscure yet interesting places on my path so I can get a slightly better taste of Oz. Any suggestions? Anyway, location by location: Byron Bay ('The Laid Back Beach')- Known as a centre of alternative culture (ie lots of hippies) and mellow waves. It also happens to be the most easterly town in mainland Australia. Isn't that interesting? What I did in Byron - Learned to surf (a bit). It's not my talent. I kept falling on my bum. - ... read more

I had been looking forward to this day for about10 days now ever since Jim and Laurie told me you could go on the TAKA live aboard for free as long as you did a bit of general housekeeping. So I signed my name up for the 16th May. Tuesday evening was pretty straightforward as it was stocking up from the previous trip which had just come in at 3pm and then next trip was scheduled to leave at 5:30pm so there is a small window in which to turn the boat around. I met the crew who I would be working closely with and that was Caroline the chef and Leila who was the cabin attendant, they were going to be beasting me for the next few days. Duties were pretty straightforward throughout the trip ... read more

4 weeks just wasn't enough to do justice to the east coast of Australia. Our arrival in Cairns was met by constant rain. We ended up staying for 4 days hoping that we'd be able to get round to a bit of sight seeing but that didn't happen. Instead we booked a couple of tours and headed south, via Greyhound bus to Airlie Beach, the gateway to the Whitsundays. Sailing around the Whitsunday Islands was fantastic - we had a great crew and a great group of people. The Whitsundays are truly beautiful - white powdery sand beaches, turquoise waters... and a little sea sickness! I tried a bit of scuba diving, the first time, and had a great time. A very surreal feeling being completely submerged in water with hundreds of fish swimming around you. ... read more

Wednesday 17. Sixteen flags (300x500mil) arrived from my printer in Perth. Spruiking excellent along real estate row in Coolongatta. Shower for 40 cents at Banora pool. That was nice. Later drove to Fingal point. Echidna rocks (forget the ancient word). Watched birds hunt, skimming waves. Were they osprey? Couldn't see the attack for the swells. In park more birds. The ubiquitous rainbow lorikeet, a pied something or other and a tan bird with subtle markings. Thur 18. Two new tires. Surf always up in Twin Towns. Slid into Surfers. Stopped at flag shop. "Southern Cross and Boomerang" to fly from The Flag Shop on Gold Coast Highway from tomorrow. That's exposure! Article in paper yet to appear - happening but. Eight lanes to Brisbane through rollng suburbia. I veered off to catch the vibe. Green and ... read more

When I first landed in Cairns I was all excited, looking forward to this great start of my travels down the east coast...this all kind of changed when I stepped outside and saw the huge mass of clouds in the sky...these wern't nice fluffy white clouds either...this followed with my hostel being disgusting (caravella77), to go have a shower I had to run out past the pool in the rain, and the actual cubicle had a part of the window missing, forcing me to shower with bent knees as not to expose myself! I then went and got my manual for my 5 day PADI diving course, and went for my diving medical...which to finish my fantastic day off...I failed... I had mild asthma when I was 5 and have never had a problem since, and ... read more
