Fuckin eh. I did the swing two days ago which was fun but nothing special. Not alot to say there. The reef trip however was amazing! I started early after a late night becuase Paul and Lisa who I met at the hostel made me come out. I had my free voucher and was told that I could save it for another day becyuase the seas were extremely rocky. I paid a $7 reef tax and this trip brought us out to the reef in record time with excellent food. Steak burgers, prawns, potato salad... etc etc etc. I ahdn't eaten this well in a while. I decided to pay extra and do an introductory dive: this was amazing and I have a new love for diving. I saw Nemo, Turtles, and a bunch of stuff ... read more

Hi everyone, trust this finds you all well. This is being written from an internet cafe in the wonderful town of Port Douglas, where we have been for the last week. Our last 2 days in Cairns were both good and bad. Bad on Saturday cos Ken had money taken from his wallet; he had lost it and found approx 2 hours later, cards intact, money gone. Not happy but at least he hadn't been mugged to obtain the money and he still has access to money. The good was Sunday when we went up to a village in the mountains called Kuranda via a scenic railway and down the mountain via a cable car (Linda was brave). Some of the views were stunning but the weather was a bit against us. We picked up our ... read more

On arrival at my hut in the rainforest up in Cape Tribulation, I left my bags on my bed and went for a walk along the beach as the weather was looking highly unpredictable... Fortunately it didn't rain, but the sun didn't come and say hello either. It was beautiful to see the rainforest reach all the way to the beach and to be able to stroll underneath parts of it whilst still on the sand. The atmosphere in this place was so relaxed, so of course that's what I did. Although, on my second day I did this activity where you go swinging through the rainforest on this kind of zip line system. I was the only one doing it, so I had the two guides to myself to poke at for lots more information ... read more

Mackay is a nice enough place. If nothing else it's good to come to a place with more than 5 shops and a few people on the streets - hell, I even found myself wanting to spend more time in the town shopping center, soaking up the noise and buzz, noseing around the people and window shopping. I'm stopping at a YHA affiliated place on Peel Street and was talking this morning to one guy who'd explained that last night got a bit out of hand, fights had broken out, police were called and one lad found himself being punched and dumped in the outback by the local cops - it took him 4 hours to walk home, once he figured out where he was! Nice hey? Wandered down to the beach last night, (reminds me ... read more

We are still in Cairns and it is slowly killing me. Cairns is a very nice city there's just not a whole lot to do. There is an ocean but it is not swimmable because the water resembles diarrhrea.... its actually very gross and there isnt sand only mud. We wish we could leave but we cant because we applied online for a tax file number. ( 47% of whatever you make is taxed if you do not have a tax file number) we cant leave untill we get this in the mail. We also set up bank accounts but we already recieved our cards in the mail. I cant wait till we can move on from here to see better parts of Australia. Cody and i went on a 2 night 3 day trip to ... read more

I had decided that if I got to Cooktown and it was still raining, I was going to quit there instead of continuing to Cape York. Well, it was raining, so I waited a couple of days and it looked like it was getting better, so I went to the top (it continued to rain, but I'm glad I went anyway). - - - Days 76-82 Cairns Day 83 - Turtle Cove Landed on a nice little beach - that I had to watch for high tide (to make sure it wouldn't 'get' me. There's a resort at the far other end of the beach. During the day I would see a number of 'couples' walking the beach. They were all guys - but I didn't really think anything of it - call me naive or ... read more

So after my late last night in Cairns, I flew to Brisbane. I ended up staying at a quiet little hostel in the Valley (Homestead Backpackers). Brisbane is a very nice city - just the right size, and with a very friendly atmosphere. I think if I had more time, I would stay here and find a job for a while. However, like many cities, Brisbane is more about the people you meet rather than all the sight-seeing. I spent a lot of time walking around time (and finding my first Fitness First gym on the East Coast). In the evening I met up with Kristof - the Belgian guy who I worked with in Melbourne. He is now working at a restaurant called Jojo's in the center of Brisbane. He is going to stay for ... read more

We got to Scotties by nightfall which was a quaint little hostel with a central pool, TV room and off hostel pub. Tom and I unpacked our bags in a room that we shared with a Swiss guy and Clancy or Carl (whichever I prefer at the time). We ate dinner at the pub where I was a little too extravagant in my purchase of kangaroo for a meal. I still hadn’t tried it and the rest of the menu looked shit, that’s my defense even though I’m definitely broke as hell and borrowed a little more money off my gracious uncle. It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good to have red meat again. The rest of the night was spent playing the drinking games we had learned with a good mix of a group. It ended up in ... read more

Finished off my time in 1770 with the best spent 50bucks ever! At 2:30, Pilot Bruce strode into the hostel wearing pristine white shorts and a neatly ironed blue shirt complete with winged epaulets. It felt like that Officer And A Gentlemen moment and I half expected 'Love Lift Us Up Where We Belong' to start magically playing out of nowhere and for Bruce to sweep me off my feet and carry me out....well, ok, maybe it wasn't quite like that, and at 13stone I'd have probably given old Brucey a hernia. More sensibly, we walked over to his car and headed over to the airstrip....a field. The plane was a hillarious 2 seater, only just bigger than a Tonka toy. We climbed in, taxied to the end of the field and zoomed off into the ... read more

Good morning from Wellington, NZ. I arrived here last night and it was chilly. There was storm here and it was even worse in the south. Today looks a lot better, the sun is shining at least. I'll be leaving for Christchurch tomorrow so I hope for good weather. Since my last blog I saw the botanical gardens in Brisbane and danced the night away in the bar adjoining the hostel with some people from Holland and England who were also staying at the hostel. I have some pics to post, so I'll write more later. ... read more
