Good things come to those who wait!
Published: February 18th 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns CityWe didn't want to depart Australia on a sad note so were determined to do the things we set out to do. Having been disappointed with the lack of native wildlife seen in 9 weeks, we visited RainForeStation Wildlife Park in Cairns. It was compact and had everything we wanted to see. I got to cuddle a koala and see all the animals that were usually asleep during the day. The enclosure allowed the kangaroos to roam freely and it was amusing to watch other tourists treat the roos like domestic pets. We approached them with caution knowing we wouldn't stand a chance if they offered us a couple of rounds of boxing... An unconventional way of spending St. Valentine's Day dressed in wetsuits. Luckily the adverse weather of late held off. I tried to ... read more
Curse You Cyclone Yasi
Published: February 12th 2012Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns CityDay 149-152 1st-4th February It was indeed a very long day of flights, first of all, a 3 hour flight back to Sydney. We’d been unable to get a direct flight to Cairns so this was the best we could do. We then had several hours hanging around Sydney airport before boarding a long flight to Cairns. We finally arrived in Cairns at around 8pm and jumped into a taxi to take us to our hostel. As we were driving along to the Globetrotters International (our hostel), the taxi driver mentioned something about a cyclone. What cyclone? We asked and then to our complete horror we were told that a category 5 cyclone, called Yasi, was on its way to Cairns and was due to hit the next day. We’d been quite isolated in Uluru and ... read more
Queensland in the floods
Published: January 23rd 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns CityAnother country and another obstacle to navigate – the floods affecting the East coast have meant that some places, like Brisbane, have had to be missed and some places, like Cairns, have taken up way more time than I would have liked. The reef diving here was amazing; so many brightly coloured fish, sparkling clear water and coral brushing against my flippers, but everything else was disappointing. I expected a gleaming city with beach bums everywhere, instead it is a small town designed for 18 year olds who like to take part in wet T-shirt contests that don’t actually involve wearing the T-shirt… After finally escaping we did a 2-day tour of Fraser Island, which is a huge sand atoll off the coast. We lucked out with a great group and guide for the tour and ... read more
Australia - Part 1
Published: January 23rd 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City4th October 2010 – 6th January 2011 Hi folks. First things first, a happy belated new year to everyone. It seems like an age ago that we last blogged and Asia is a dim and distant memory. Now we can update you on what has been going on in Australia over the last 3 months. We arrived in Sydney to be greeted at the airport by Ellie’s sister, Bexs who had arrived with Rich from Singapore a few days earlier. We were initially surprised by how chilly it was in the land where the sun always shines, or so we had been led to believe by Neighbours and Home and Away. In reality, Sydney had just had its coldest winter in years and a wet summer was expected after 10 years of drought – great timing! ... read more

Doin' the Cairns Cairns
Published: January 4th 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns CityWednesday 12-29 Got up waaay too early today (4am) to catch our flight into Cairns (pronounced "cans"). When we got to Cairns were able to hitchhike into town thanks to the generosity of a very nice lady who took pity on us and our giant backpacks. Most of our day was spent hanging out at a free public beach-side pool known as the Cairns Lagoon. It was pretty nice but it started to rain, which interrupted our nap on the grass. Cairns is a little trickier of a place to visit than we thought. Our initial draw was to come here and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, which we plan to do on Sunday (one day is all we could afford). But there’s very little to actually due in Cairns (most of the beaches and attractions ... read more
CHRISTMAS IN CAIRNS
Published: February 7th 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns CityToday was the day we had been dreaming about. Although we love Hilda and we were getting used to the humidity, the thought of spending 4 nights in an air conditioned apartment with a real bed was so exciting! What was even more exciting was that Gemma and Kieran were arriving tonight and after Christmas we would be starting out adventure down the East coast together. We had just one more thing to do before we could check in and we were hoping that it would be different from doing it at home. The people here are so chilled out that we were sure it would be. - we were soooo wrong! I now know that it doesn’t matter what side of the world you are on Christmas shopping is a nightmare and it turns even ... read more
Chilling in Cairns
Published: December 16th 2010Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns CityHi all, so this is my last blog, 41st one, bit spooky as same number of years I have been kicking around on this planet! Blogs total around 45,000 words and 1000 pickies! Can vividly remember writing my first one back in January in Miami! Writing this one the day before I fly home from Cairns, via Brisbane and Singapore, 24 hours in the sky plus few hours at airports! Finishing and publishing at Esmes house. So last few weeks of my travels, or in my case last few weeks chilling in the sun! Arrived at Cairns airport at silly oclock in the morning, 0410 to be precise! Caught a bus to the hostel, Northern Greenhouse, three of us got off the bus and the guy on reception let us crash in the tv room as ... read more
It's really boring travelling by yourself. You only do what you want to do, so there's no waiting around in shops you don't want to be in for someone else. This sounds nice, but it gets really lame really fast. There was no one around the hostel today, so I spent most of the day walking around the city, which was nice, but it was too hot to be out for long. I can't wait to get to the Contiki hotel tomorrow. At least there I can meet the people I'll be hanging out with for the next 2 weeks, and maybe there will be something to do. There's no point going on any of the tours of the area since part of my Contiki tour is spent here. I spent some time in the fancy ... read more
