On arrival into Cairns airport we were greeted with a friendly "G'day" from the security man, and happily settled into our hostel, the infamous Gilligans. We spent our first few nights in Australia drinking, naturally, and had a great time meeting new people in Gilligan's own nightclub. The highlights of our nightlife had to be playing a crazy game of 'Bogan Bingo', driving round in an open top party bus, and watching too many wet T-shirt competitions! When we weren't hungover we managed to spend a day at the lagoon (in the north lagoon's tend to be favoured over the ocean because of the crazy amount of sharks hanging around), and we did a day trip to Atherton Tablelands. Here we walked through the rainforest, swung on vines, and swam in a couple of freezing waterfalls; ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Orchard Road September 13th 2011

Arriving into Singapore we were headed to Betelbox hostel, a place we would come to feel right at home in. First impressions of Singapore weren't great, until we headed into the city centre (mainly river area) when we realised we were staying in the dodgy area. However with Singapore being the cleanest and safest city we've been to the dodgy area wasn't bad at all! Just a walk away we had East Coast Beach, a nice park backing onto the harbour with views of the shipping lanes which proved to be a nice break from the city life. Our first real taste of Singapore was the river cruise, starting at Clarke Quay and travelling the length of the river, we saw all the main sights of Singapore... from the Merlion (Singapore's mascot of half lion/half fish), ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu September 7th 2011

We arrived into Kota Kinabalu, the capital city, and spent a couple of days checking out the area and planning our stay. One day was spent sunbathing on the beautiful island of Manukan, part of a national park, and another at Mount Kinabalu Park where we walked a few trails through the forest at the bottom of the humungous mountain, unfortuantely it was cloudy and we couldn't see the peak! In order to avoid the screechy, ridiculously loud woman that sang in the bar opposite every single night, we headed down to a little Italian restaurant and discovered their amazingly tasty bread basket with garlic dip, mmmm! Definitely beats the frog porridge of Singapore. We next headed to the east coast of Sabah, to Sandakan. We soon realised their wasn't a great deal to do there ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta August 21st 2011

After a drunken flight from Bangkok and a night of no sleep we arrived in Bali to the lovely area of Sanur and promptly crashed. It took about 2 days to recover but luckily we were in the nicest hotel we'd stayed in so far... HBO, comfy beds and a lovely swimming pool occupied us. Once we were fully recovered we moved on to Ubud, with everywhere being so close in Bali the 1 hr taxi ride was a welcome relief from all the 12 hr journeys in Vietnam/Cambodia. Ubud was a lovely quaint town, occupied mostly by monkeys and tourists looking for something a little different. Up in the mountains it was a refreshing change from seasides and cities. We soon realised we were going to love Bali, the national dishes were satay chicken and ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh August 18th 2011

After our last messy night in Vietnam, we were a little worse for wear getting up for our 8 hour bus journey to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Luckily crossing the border proved to be fairly easy this time and we arrived at the hostel to say a final farewell to the legend that is Bryan Fitzgerald. We were a little sceptical about Phnom Penh having heard it's dodgy from other travellers, and passing a prostitute on the stairs to our room at 4pm. But we went down to some bars by the river and it was fine, quite a nice place actually! The must-see things in Phnom Penh are S-21 and the Killing Fields, so we headed there the next day. S-21 is a high school turned security prison where the Cambodians were detained and tortured under ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An August 16th 2011

After our first sleeper bus from Hanoi to Hue (the first of many!) we checked into a hostel to meet a very lovely english girl - Laura, she motivated us to actually do something with our first day in Hue, so off we headed on the back of a motorbike each to see a bit of culture. Probably our most cultural day to date and arriving back very windswept and dusty we bumped into some friends from Halong Bay and headed out for a night of danish drinking games and bieber impersonations (bieber continued to make an appearance every step along the way in Vietnam). After seeing all of Hue in one day we were a little bit at a loss the next day so made friends with a vietnamese australian and a drunk recovering alchoholic ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An August 3rd 2011

Good morning Vietnam! Well actually it was evening when we arrived but you get the idea. Our first stop on our coastal trip down Vietnam was Hanoi, the capital. We were told before arriving that when crossing the road you should close your eyes and walk out (as the motorbikes will go round you), this proved to be useful as the city is chaos with motorbikes. The whole city was noisy, dirty, hot and just a bit of a hectic place to navigate. Luckily 3 of our friends from Thailand were already here so we met them and escaped for the day by going to the mall, a bit of a treat! Watched transformers 3 and had a thoroughly western day. Our next escape of the city came in the form of a 3 day tour ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang August 2nd 2011

After arriving in the middle of the night on a bus to the middle of nowhere (by the Thai/ Laos border), we were all set for the next part of our journey. After a few hours sleep (literally) we got a boat after bus, after boat after bus to finally receive our visa. At this point everyone we had spoken to was going on the slow boat into Laos, where as we had opted for the 7hr speedboat, starting to think we were going to be the only people on this thing we were taken to a remote little pier ( I say pier, it was a cockroach infested set of bamboo floating by the side of the river.) Here we met the other brave sailors daring for the speedboat, 2 other english girls, a thai ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai » Doi Suthep July 16th 2011

On arrival in Chiang Mai we were greeted by rain, and a lot of it. The North is definitely rainier than the South with at least one downpour per day. We decided to do a one-day trek and fortunately the weather was on our side. After an early wake up we were taken to an orchid and butterfly farm, not exactly the highlight of the day but Dave was in his element. After this we headed up into the mountains to start the trekking, with Tuck our trusty guide. He certainly looked the part with his bamboo hat and machete. The walk through the jungle was fun, with awesome views across the valleys, and Tuck pausing to show us different things like making paper aeroplanes out of grass, bubbles out of plants and cutlery out of ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok July 13th 2011

We arrived into Bangkok, and immediately went to check out the infamous Khao San Road...it didn't disappoint! A hectic street covered in street vendors, bars and as many westerners as a night out at home. After turning down many offers for "puh puh" (ping pong show) and tuk tuks we settled down for our first bucket. After this we didn't look back, joined by some other Nap park guests we toured the bars of Bangkok and even made it to a ladyboy Cabaret on one evening (although the most eventful aspect of the night was the tuk tuk driver on drugs doing wheelies across the city). Although Bangkok was a bit of a party week (much deserved after our indian endurance) we did manage to get a river taxi to see Wat Pho, a temple with ... read more
