Geo: 37.5406, -77.4334Our last traveling day went smoothly enough. I was tempted to get a last pint of cider at the airport bar, but opted for tea instead, given the hour of the morning. We spent our last pocketful of Euros in the vending machine at the airport where we loaded up on Irish/British sweets that we could not get at home. These are never-fail travel gifts for the younger set. The best one we found, both for taste and for packaging was the Yorkie candy bar which advertises itself with the slogan, "Not for Girls!" Josh wanted to know why we didn't have such a great candy bar at home. Alex and Josh's friends Andrew and Nick were all delighted by them. Clearly Euros well spent.... read more

My entire life, I LOVED having a summer birthday. Week-long celebrations, parties at the lake or at the pool, I could always have a sleep over on my birthday, regardless of the day of the week… very nice. But every once in a while I didn’t like it so much. In junior high, they couldn’t decorate my locker- things like that. When I interned, there were 6 interns and 9 staff members during the year. Everyone’s birthday was during the September-June that the internship ran, and everyone’s birthday was in the same month with someone else… except me. So, my friends surprised me (almost) with a wonderful half-birthday party in February. The same is true on tour. We celebrated Sarah’s, though a few days late (Kyle was there for The Day), and we celebrated Kyle’s last ... read more

Geo: 37.5406, -77.4334The preparations for the trip naturally began some time ago, but what better time to start a travel blog to Ireland than on St. Patrick's Day? Kate reminded me on her way out the door that I need to put on green. Although it's unlikely that one of my tennis friends will pinch me if I forget, it seems like a good time to start getting into the spirit of our upcoming adventure. I've ordered a book from Barnes and Noble called A Pint of Plain: Tradition, Change, and the Fate of the Irish Pub. I'm hoping that it will both make for entertaining reading and provide some additional fodder for the paper on expatriate accounts that I will leave behind unfinished when I go. Josh spent an hour at the Apple store yesterday ... read more

Today we drove from Chapel Hill to Richmond, Virginia to see Neha! 2.5 hours of driving felt like ten minutes compared to our previous days. We arrived in Richmond at 1:30, got lunch at a local brewhouse, toured her medical school and the capitol, and came back to her place for some much needed relaxation. She even made us a delicious dinner and hot chocolate later! Tomorrow we will be heading to DC to stop in for lunch with Jenn, followed by our final destination of Island Heights, New Jersey!... read more

Monument Avenue My next day started in Monument Avenue. I say "in" because the name refers to a neighborhood as well as the street it grew up around. The actual avenue is a Parisian style boulevard with a wide grassy meridian. Every couple of blocks, various Confederate groups erected a grand monument to a Confederate hero. With one exception, all are Virginia natives. In a city filled with statues to the Confederacy, the ones on this street are the grandest of them all. The statue of Robert E. Lee shows him resolute on horseback, facing south to overlook the land he swore to defend. The statue is mounted on a grand pedestal done in Beaux Arts style. Three blocks away is the monument to Jefferson Davis. It shows the Confederate President resolutely addressing his nation, in ... read more

The next part of my trip dived deep into history, how its presented, and what is says about us. The destination was Richmond, a city heavy with historic symbolism. For someone who grew up in New England, with its own ever-present links to the past, visiting Richmond is a peculiar experience. Most of it feels like any modern city. The remainder feels like the capitol of a country that no longer exists. This is, in fact, the case; Richmond was the capitol of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death My first destination was St. John's Church. This church has become famous for one single speech by one man, Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry was a successful lawyer, legislator, and fiery ... read more

We picked up a rental car and got the hell out of Myrtle Beach! It was great to have our own wheels and independence again. Our only gripe so far on this trip is the restrictions of having to stick to train and bus schedules and get around solely on public transport. On all previous trips we’ve always had our own car so this time we knew it would be a little different but it still proved to be an adjustment. We drove the day to stay with our friend Kim, her mom Todd and her visiting sister Kelly in Mineral. Kim had stayed with us back home through CS and we really got on well and were looking forward to catching up with her again. Kim lived in a small country town called Mineral, located ... read more

This is my first post. I wanted to do this before I left. Thanks for everyone that is interested in what I'm about to embark on. It's exciting and scary all at once. I'm about to leave a lot of people that care about me to venture into an unknown territory with unknown people... and I can't wait. I leave this Sunday from Dulles airport at 10pm and I'm due to arrive in Accra, Ghana at 8:10 pm. I will be 4 hours ahead over there. ... read more
