We were set for 4 days in Chiang Mai. We got an absolute bargain through Wotif.com on the Centara Duangtawan hotel. A very plush 4 star hotel for 50 bucks a night instead of $250. Fully equipped with everything that you need. However for most things such as food and internet, you would walk less than 100 metres and find it for 20% of the price. The location was perfect though, as the famous “Night Bazaar” was less than 200 metres away. The Night Bazaar is a nightly market where you can buy everything from food to designers clothes, sunglasses and watches (All genuine of course…..). This first night we just strolled around to get a feel for things. Our second day involved a tour into the outskirts of Chiang Mai where Hayley fulfilled a dream ... read more

After a very pleasant flight we arrived in Bangkok, just after 5:30am. Once we cleared customs we caught the airport shuttle to our hotel. Although, soon after leaving the airport, we remembered that we were supposed to pick up our train tickets from an office back at the airport. We decided we would head to our hotel and venture back later. On the way we witnessed the craziness of Bangkok traffic, only to be outdone by the actions of the scooter bandits. Scooters are everywhere in Bangkok and for good reason. They cost nothing to run, they get about quickly, and finally, can and will squeeze between 2 moving buses. In our half hour bus ride, we could not believe that no one got skittled. We were dropped of by the bus at the intersection near ... read more

After having a fantastic time in Boston, it was back to the Big Apple for the final couple of days of our trip. The first priority was to fulfill on of Hayley's dreams of a Horse and Carriage ride through Central Park. It didn't start particularly well with Hayley dropping her ice cream before boarding. However it was a lovely evening, with our friendly Irish driver. He pointed out many of the historical points within and around the park, but it was the sound of the horse clip clopping along, with us snuggled up in the back, that made for a relaxing night. The next day, we set off on foot to further explore Central Park. We were joined by thousands of other people that day, as central park is the finishing point for the NYC ... read more

In the very North-East corner of the United States is Bar Harbor, Maine. Bar Harbor is a quaint and picturesque town on Mount Desert Island in the Acadia National Park. Precipice Trail head, while short in distance at 1.3 kms it rises about 350 metres along the eastern face of Mount Champlain with many rungs and ladders along the way. it is definitely not for those scared of heights. Many sections of the trail are very narrow and a slip would be the end of you. This also provided a great challenge and some magnificent views of Frenchman Bay.... read more

After spending a night in Moncton, we headed off towards St John. Along the way, we returned to the Bay of Fundy and Hopewell Rocks to check out the height of the water on the rising tide. After hanging around for a couple of hours, we thought that looking a dirty water was not as spectacular as we would have hoped. Upon arrival to St John we were met by our host, Debbie who informed us of a monthly art gallery tour, that was being held that night. We went along and enjoyed complimentary beer and wine while we appreciating some of the art. We just hung out with Debbie for the rest of the night which was fantastic. In the morning Debbie took us for a quick tour around town. St John has a fantastic ... read more

An hour long ferry ride took us off Prince Edward Island to Nova Scotia. Our destination was Sydney, Nova Scotia. The drive itself was very pretty, once again the fall colours being the highlight. Arriving in Sydney, we found ourselves a cheap B&B, in fact it was only $45 for the night. Before the day was out we quickly took off for Louisbourg to check out the fortress, which was key in the battle for control of Canada between the British and the French. The fortress has been preserved to show the living conditions for the soldiers in the 1700’s. Unfortunately by the time we got there the last tour bus from the visitor centre had already left. We were still able to see the fort from a distance and it was quite large and ... read more

Halifax is the home of Canada’s best beer, Alexander Keith’s and also home of man’s largest explosion prior to the atomic bomb. This occurred when two boats collided, one of the boats had a full cargo of ammunition. We had originally planned on staying with a friend from Jasper but when she was no longer available we put out an emergency host request on couchsurfing hoping that someone was feeling charitable. Luckily for us Wayne took us in. Undoubtedly Wayne was one of our most memorable hosts, very unique (but in a good way), very frank and highly comicable! One evening we paid a visit to the Maritime Musuem of the Atlantic which housed an excellent collection of real sailing boats and a good Titanic exhibit. We followed that by a tour of the Alexander Kieth’s ... read more

After a relatively early morning (9.00am Ha Ha) we set off for Fredericton, the Capital of New Brunswick. New Brunswick has a number of tourist routes including the River Valley drive. It was full of the yellow, red and green leaves that made up the fall colours. Along the way we stopped in at the town of Grand Falls in which the centrepiece of downtown are the falls themselves. In our travels the falls are usually a little way out of town, so this was a touch unusual. WE eventually arrived out our host’s place for the night. Dom and a very pregnant Nancy were lovely people and Dom gave us a brief night tour of downtown Fredericton. It was very quiet at night, but the nice old buildings under the lights created a charming atmosphere. ... read more

After a late start and a day of driving we arrived at dusk to Quebec City where we met our very energetic CS host George. He was a born joker and at the same time, so very intelligent. We had a night in with wonderful food, a bottle of red and some great conversation. After waking, we quick got ready and set off for the Old City. Quebec is one of the only cities in the world to still have its city wall still intact. Once you walk inside the walls, it doesn’t feel like you are in North America any more. The charming old buildings as well hearing the French language everywhere makes you fell as though you are across the Atlantic. Most of our day was spent wandering around, just absorbing the atmosphere. Atop ... read more

After the drive from ottawa we headed straight for our host, Alain’s, place. Mick quickly proceeded to rack up another stupid travel memory by locking the keys in the car. Since we were out of the province of Ontario, our car rental assistance was no longer valid. Luckily Alain’s brother was a member of the CAA and they came and helped us out. After settling in we were off to a couchsurfing dinner at an Indonesian Restaurant. It was a little pricey, but overall it was great tasting food and a good chance to meet a few more friendly csing members. We started the next day by joining in the annual Montreal CS group’s hike and apple picking excursion. The hike started about 20 mins drive east of the city and three hours later the 16 ... read more
