An hour long ferry ride took us off Prince Edward Island to Nova Scotia. Our destination was Sydney, Nova Scotia. The drive itself was very pretty, once again the fall colours being the highlight. Arriving in Sydney, we found ourselves a cheap B&B, in fact it was only $45 for the night. Before the day was out we quickly took off for Louisbourg to check out the fortress, which was key in the battle for control of Canada between the British and the French. The fortress has been preserved to show the living conditions for the soldiers in the 1700’s. Unfortunately by the time we got there the last tour bus from the visitor centre had already left. We were still able to see the fort from a distance and it was quite large and impressive. Sydney itself is a quaint town and we took an hour or so to grab a bite to eat and simply have a look around, before retiring for the night
We awoke to a massive breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast and fruit. The perfect start to what was going to be huge day. The Cabot trail is a scenic drive along the
northern portion of Cape Breton Island. It is said to rival the Icefields Parkway in the Rockies as one of the most beautiful drives in the world. There is an abundance of scenic coastline and beautiful valleys, and we took the time to walk a few of the trails. The clouds unfortunately dominated the sky, however when the sun made an appearance, it really lit up the landscape with a sea of predominantly yellow and red leaves. We also saw what looked to be a black bear, tied to the front of a car. A puzzled look came over our faces, followed by a simultaneous “Was that a….?” A bear was the only conclusion we could come up with. Anyway, overall the drive was quite spectacular, not quite the Icefields Parkway but definitely worth the trip out there.
Our intentions for the day were to reach Halifax but by the time we had finished the Cabot trail it was nearly 6pm so we decided to look for somewhere to eat and a cheap bed for the night. Well here comes a great story. Let us say that if you ever come across a souvenir/fireworks/seafood restaurant outlet, never under any
circumstances stop there. They’re full of F#$%ing fruitcakes. We got out of the car and went to the door to find that it was locked, but all the lights were ablaze. Next thing we knew a guy came from the house next door, welcoming us in the loudest voice he could muster. We subsequently found out, this is the only volume he knew. He let us in and invited us to sit down. We were a little apprehensive but sat down anyway. After a few minutes of waiting for a menu our friend returned with rolls and chowder before quickly returning to the kitchen. Now at this stage we hadn’t ordered anything, so why was he bringing out anything. After a little bit of WTF time, I went back to the kitchen to ask if we could see the menu and was met with the crazy audible reply of “NO MENUS HERE. JUST CONFUSES THINGS.” Hayley was getting pretty jittery back at the table. With such extended travel we were obviously on a budget so I asked him how I’d know how much everything was and was met with “WE JUST LOOK AT PEOPLE, THEN DECIDE HOW MUCH TO CHARGE.”
“You F*#$ing what???????” I thought to myself, then asked “well how do I know what we are eating?” he answered with “WHAT DO YOU EAT IN AUSTRALIA, KANAGAROOS? KOALAS?…NO NO NO, NOT KOALAS, NATIONAL EMBLEM” followed by some other dribbling of shit out of his mouth. By this stage we had definitely had enough so we decided to just leave. I told the guy how ridiculous the whole situation was and we left. He tried to get us to stay saying “WE WORK OUT A PRICE, WE WORK OUT A PRICE” but we just bolted for the door and then the car. He didn’t follow us out and where not sure where he went. Whether he went out back to scratch his head or grab a shotgun we don’t know, but we weren’t hanging around to find out. That guy was off his rocker. We just drove for half an hour until we got to the next, somewhat sizable town. The whole drive we were simply in shock, thinking, what the hell just happened back there and off course all the what ifs start spinning out of control in your head.
We found a steakhouse with plenty of people
in it to have dinner and beer. Trust us, the beer went down in a flash. We ended up staying across the road in a cheap hotel and ended up sleeping extremely well after such a long, and interesting day.
