Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Alex's thoughts: I think that going to Turkey is going to be a lot of fun. I'm going on a train for the first time. I am going to sleep on the train. I think it's going to be pretty easy to fall asleep on the train because the sleeper car was made to have people sleep on it. I think there will be melons in Turkey. They are supposed to be the best melons. I think they will taste great. I like to eat them cold. I think they will have some different kinds of melons from the ones that we have in America. I hope they have Fruit Roll-ups there. They are delicious. When we get to Turkey we will use buses, trains and airplanes. I know how to say "excuse me" in ... read more

Leigh and I had decided to move to Europe from the beginning. We have travelled there and loved it and we desperately wanted to go back. My brother Kari clued me in to a little bit of information about Finland offering ancestral citizenship. So I applied. 300 dollars later (and several letters back and forth from the Finnish embassy), I was made a Finnish citizen! Ok, next step- get a Finnish passport. Six months later I received my Finnish passport. YEA! I felt like an international spy with two different passports with the same picture. So the path was set for a move to Europe… but where in Europe? What did we want? Where did we want to go? We listed our criteria (a pretty short list), and we decided we liked the sound of ... read more

Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Today we had an appointment with C. Bruce Norman at the Travel Clinic at Henrico Doctors' Hospital. In addition to our "standard" immunizations, we opted to receive an immunization against Typhoid Fever. While the chances of getting typhoid are not good, it is recommended for "risk averse" travellers who will have an extended stay in Turkey. Since "risk averse" describes me to a "T," we ponied up the $ for the shots. It is also available as a series of pills, but the shot seemed much easier. Ms. Norman is a consummate professional and was able to speak confidently about the region and briefed us on the primary the health concerns. Rabies is the big one, so we all discussed leaving cute, furry animals alone. We also got to see some new syringes that ... read more

Geo: 42.9371, -72.8497We've rented the house, we've bought the tickets, we've made hotel reservations. What else is there to do? Well... they Typhoid shots. I'm pretty sure we won't get typhoid without them, but how embarassing would that be to try and explain to people back home how I lost a child to typhoid? So we're going to the travel clinic next week. I spoke with the travel clinic lady on the phone the other day and she was Johnny-on-the-spot and really seemed to have a good grasp of what we needed to do. When prepping for the unknown, it's good to talk with people who inspire confidence. Rabies is also a danger, so we need to remember to stay away from animals.... read more

And, I thought my latest adventure to Richmond, VA was all about completing my longest race ever - Ukrop's Monument Ave 10k... hardly an adventure considering my success running the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago the previous weekend. Pre-race, I had other worries. We all agreed beforehand to dress as superheroes. That meant purchasing or borrowing adult-sized costumes. At first, I chose to be Spiderman, but feared I'd faint if I were to run while covering myself with a skintight outfit from head-to-toe. I ended up exchanging costume ideas with another friend so I could "dress up" as the Incredible Hulk. As the Hulk, all I had to do was buy a few containers of greenery from the local costume shop and I'd be all set, right? Well, if you consider the tradeoff of running ... read more

So really early in the morning we got up and ate some cereal and walked a few blocks to a cold congregation awaiting some rented vans that would drive us to the rugby game at U of Richmond. The car ride was alright, we were all tired. Once we got there the team started warming up and such, I went for a run around campus. U Richmond is a pretty campus from what I saw. Somehow I didn't get completely lost and got back to the field in time for the game to start. Rugby is a really intense sport with rules I do not understand in the slightest. However, thanks to some help and some beer from one of the girls' rugby-playing boyfriends I got really into it. They use fun words like "scrum" and ... read more

This is the first blog I have been allowed to do since the start of the trip, because of my terrible spelling and grammar. So be warned this blog will have many mistakes. I didn't really want to leave Charleston but Ian was deperate to get to Augusta and see the Masters golf course. I think the Masters golf course is all that Augusta has to offer because while Ian and Gell were trying to sneak into the gold course, I went looking for the "historic district" of town but just ended up walking through the bad areas of town with a big map and guys yelling out of trucks asking if I was lost. Ian and Gell didn't have any luck trying to get into the golf course, they made it slightly past the gate ... read more

Monument Games was a glorious occasion. It actually happened! Well, for one day. The girl’s team got screwed over on fields the day before The whole event, so that part was up to par. Some of our games were on the IM fields, some on the soccer fields and some on the lacrosse field. Actually, since it was out tournament, Kristen, Kara, Sarah and Allie were smart enough to plan the first day so that the RedHotz had all IM games. mhuahaha. I went to practice on Friday with the team and played the entire time. Ran my ass off. I forgot, once again, how different sailing in shape is to Frisbee in shape. I was so sore the net day, body and new-cleated blisters wise, which I didn't go in for any points on ... read more

Friends, Relatives and Co-Workers...Thank You We just returned from a night out with our dear friends Don and Lindsay Mears. We went to BW3s for dinner (to continue our all American food binge) and then went to Starbucks to have drinks and play games for most of the evening. As the evening drew to a close we returned to Don and Lindsay's house to take some photos with them so that we could have pictures to show people while we travel and something to make us feel better when we get home sick. Don gave us a usb jump drive with a bunch of pictures on it so that we can have the pictures with us wherever we go. The idea was completely Don's and while we haven't looked at the pictures yet due to ... read more
