The Excess, the JayMan, Skinny and Samwise

Bristol2Bombay

Welcome family, friends and fellow bloggers.

Our blog will document our journey through un-chartered areas of the world. Who knows the challenges that await us.. surviving a Clemson thanksgiving football game? Escaping hostage by a fijian tribe? Racking up roadkill in Oz? How will Dunc react after seeing his real family for the first time - the Orangutans of Indonesia? And will the boys save humiliation and not find themselves in a tricky situation with a thai lady boy!

The answers to all these questions lie in the future. We will do our best to update everything with this blog. To all the people we know between us reading this: please comment on our adventures and places we will be seeing.

I am absolutely knackerd, road-weary and worn out. So please forgive my tone its lack of vitality... Be sure it is no reflection on the wild and fantastic ride that India has taken us on... After over nine months apart, my Cherie and I were finally reunited. It so happened that any anxiaties i had were dispelled after several frantic hours rushing around the subburbs of Bombay trying to find the lost little thing after a failed rendez-vous at bombay's hectic airport. I had rented a chic hotel, blowing my budget to smitherines for a few special nights. I must impress upon you that the temperatures in just-pre-monsoon Bombay where swealtering and that the humidity in the air was off the charts. A bit of help with adjustment was most welcome. Pauline had brought me ... read more

Arriving into another country at midnight, this arrival could have felt the same as the rest. However it was our first loss of the trip. Duncan, our fourth man set his final sail back home to the West Country, Bristol. Leaving three behind. Our final city infamous in our title B2B; 'Bombay' now know as Mumbai had finally been reached. The mood was different with the regular fire of adventure not burning as brightly with our hearts and minds feeling the realisation of home being only 1 month away and the fairy tale journey almost at an end. It was until a sweaty midday rising that gave us the needed fuel to throw onto the fires of adventure with a look at our new city. Bombay has a fantastic mix of historical buildings and a ... read more

For our final flirt as a four, to the swirling sands of the desert we have wondered. Four days remained before Bristol2Bombay faded from the sun... Having taken the bus from Xinning, with perhaps a day trip in mind, we arrived in the Atomic City - Xi Hai. We had to obtain a special permit to enter into this region as it is both where China tests and researches its nuclear weapons and launches its space program. Xi Hai itself is a strange looking place, we learned later that this is because it was actually built by the Soviets back in the day. Before any officials had the chance to accost us, we were whisked off by a much tanned Chinese looking man kitted in biker gear and boots, sunnies and hair fresh out of ... read more

Enough of tarmac, the bank of China and "Hotels for Foreigners". Enough of stir-fried pork with green pepper (Duncan’s staple diet) and the Han Chinese. We had seen the Ying, Bristol2Bombay went to Tibet to find the Yang.... The Sitting Room of Degei Gompa It's 8 'o' clock in the evening; all is dark but for candlelight and some glowing coals. We sit on cushions around the room, each next to a monk. They wear their traditional red robes and sip yak butter tea whilst reading Tibetan scripture. We do the same but instead of prayers we are reading "Bleak house", "The Odyssey", "The Japanese Buddhist Organization Writings of the Dharma" and... err..."Harry Potter". The fifth one mind (it's well thick). We have befriended two wise monks; they live on the vast plateau of Ganzi. ... read more

It was like going back to school for us. We were off to stay in Hong Kong for the next five days with our favourite tutor from school, Miss Lees, or Paula as we call her now. Although i lost count of the number of times Sam called her 'miss' in everyday situations. Now, to most kids this would sound like an unbearable nihtmare, but we all knew why our Drama books were never marked and handed back to us on time. Paula loved to go out and party and enjoy the spice in life - this was going to be no detention. Paula met us at the airport with open arms, what a delight it was to see her after so long! We took the train over to Hong Kong island which gave us ... read more

The B2B member’s lives have most certainly changed forever with the experiences that we have encountered over the past 5 months. Haggling has now become an art form and our pigeon English has become slower and clearer, but the most noticeable skill we have developed, is our perfection of the beach lifestyle. Everywhere we've visited we can't seem to stay away from the beautiful white sandy shores surrounded by turquoise seawaters home to tropical fish and amazing coral. This particular lifestyle wasn't going to stop any time soon, as we were heading into Thailand with arguably the most perfect beaches in the world. Still separated from Jona the three of us flew from Medan to "Malaysia Truly Asia's" capital - Kuala Lumpur, known to the cooler traveller as K.L. Our time was short in the ... read more

Like the navigator Antonio de Abreu before me I headed East across the arphicalego, towards the Cabo das Flores Instead of searching for Sandalwood I was looking for Komodo Dragons and coloured volcanic lakes. For currency I carried Indonesian Rupiah, whereas the Makassasrese before me would have used Gold, or maybe even elephant tusk. Flores had definitely seen changes. Six-foot Satellite dishes beamed MTV down from space into villages where huts are still made from bamboo. Noisy Bemo wind through roads which follow the ancient igneous landscape. The crucifix looms tall in villages where some do not know who Jesus Christ was, but still practice Animism. Buffalo sacrifices are still common, tiny huts called Ngadhu are the centre of each village, and death is still a punishment used in some villages. Yet in Labanbajo there ... read more

Slung into Singapore our now worldly and bearded boys are on the return journey, the Odyssey has commenced and with it a new chapter of tribulations, considerations and felicitations unfolds. Our stay with the Lion People can only be described as fabulous. This was thanks to our Singapore connection; Sarah. Having been whisked off from the airport we soon found ourselves on the 17th floor of Regency Park. Condominium luxury lifestyle ensued over Gin and Tonics, marble floors and practically panoramic views of the city. We spent our time getting ourselves together, making and executing decisions, preparing and gathering our thoughts. All the while breathing in Singapore’s atmosphere. Hawker centers, Little India, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Orchard Road and Raffles may sound familiar? Throwing peanut shells at one another in the Long Bar at Raffle’s Hotel, ... read more

We let the sails fly from our golden ship, a.k.a the Big Dog, and headed north to our first taste of tropical Australia. Thus began our final few weeks in Oz- a busy time of skydiving, sailing and gambling fitted in between episodes with mangoes and run-ins with angry hostel owners . . . Although we were all glad to be back with the Big Dog (after we split for Fraser), Samwise was seemingly too glad. It was on the long, straight road from Hervey Bay to Town of 1770 that the Big Dog led us off to a lovely spot by the river for lunch. Unfortunately for the rest of us, Samwise was in the driving seat. Before waiting for an opinion - Dunc was asleep in the front, Al and Jona in the ... read more
