So I have finally begun packing, yet still it's challenging not to do the usual wait till the last night to get everything done routine. I probably should have done a little more research and planning, o well I guess I'm going to stick with my original plan to just wing it. I have 90 days to stay in the eu so Im going to have to make my time there count... And just head to Asia a little sooner that I had planned. All part of the adventure. So the plan as of now (everything is subject to change ((the whole winging concept))) is to begin my trip by flying into Belgium for the first 2 weeks of June and spending a little time with mamma Taylor. Then I head to Amsterdam to eithier watch ... read more

Published: February 27th 2012North America » United States » Virginia » RichmondI had intended to call this post something else..but in light of the days events, the Bugs Bunny quotes is far more appropriate. So we got off to a late start. Mis-communiction often leads to delay and it seems today is not different. Once we were under way we made reasonably good time…until, as we approached Hartford, the GPS was nagging us to turn for Route 91 and Craig saw the sign which read “New York City”…which he quickly determined the he did not like. “I don’t want to go to NYC!”. We (OK, he!) made a snap decision which involved taking an unplanned detour with no maps to support us. Hey, it is an adventure after all.. Eventually we capitulated, gave in to the unceasing complaints of the GPS and got back on track.. We ... read more
New York burbs, Philly, Washington and Richmond
Published: September 23rd 2011North America » United States » Virginia » RichmondWe have handed over authorship of this post to our temporary travelling companion, and permanent daughter, who has joined us for a few weeks to check out just a little of the USA. Coming off a 27 hour journey from Brisvegas, being accosted at the JFK Airport arrival gate by Kenny Rogers and his much younger third wife was a bit of a surprise. Then I rubbed my tired eyes and they turned into my parents. Phew. Given that they knew where the hotel was, I was glad they made it to the terminal to get me. Sadly my request to be met with cheesy fries had been ignored, a disappointment I did my best to get over by remembering I was in New York (New York!). Overnight in Jamaica, the suburb next to the airport, ... read more

Final Destination - 30,600 miles of travel in almost 4 months!
Published: October 16th 2011North America » United States » Virginia » RichmondWe woke up and made our way to the train station which was super close, I was happy to be in Frankfurt the night before my flight was leaving since it left more room for error, because things can and do go wrong! To make a case in point, Derrick and I almost boarded the wrong train to the airport, but like the rest of my trip, we fixed the mix-up just in the nick of time. (Even if we did miss the train we had left with plenty of time). We had a quiet ride to the airport, Derricks direct flight to Philadelphia left from a completely different terminal than my flight which had layovers in Ireland and Boston, so we parted ways at the airport. I had plenty of time so I wandered around ... read more

The Glory of the New(ish) South
Published: January 6th 2012North America » United States » Virginia » RichmondToday, for the most part, was another day for rest, bills, and laundry. It did have one very significant cultural site. In 1898, Lewis Ginter, who had made a fortune in tobacco, decided to build the finest hotel in the world. It would show the world that Richmond had recovered from the devastation of the Civil War and was once again an equal of cities in the North. He named it after Thomas Jefferson. The hotel got on the world’s social calendar immediately, by hosting the marriage of Charles Dana Gibson, the patrician artist who created the Gibson Girl prints. The hotel remained a glorious place to stay until the Depression hit. A long slow decline followed, until new owners... read more
Richmond Virginia is a very odd place culturally. Most of the city feels and acts like a modern regional capitol that is slowly being absorbed into the Washington DC exurbia. The rest feels like an important outpost of a distinct regional culture. This difference appears most dramatically where the Civil War is concerned. The former viewpoint sees the war as a complex conflict over many issues, particularly slavery, and discusses the less honorable parts of the southern war experience. The latter viewpoint sees the war as a highlight (WARNING: Link may be offensive) of everything that makes Southern culture distinctive and valuable (honor, valor, family, etc.) and celebrates Richmond as the Confederate c... read more
