This morning waking up knowing that we had a Pony Pool Party to look forward to & only 60 miles, made for a much more enjoyable wake up than 90 miles in this heat, especially after yesterday’s ride. I finished packing my freshly clean clothes before tucking in for breakfast from the men at our host. After breakfast, I cleaned out the cooler that was infested with milk & lemonade mixed together at the bottom that Carly & I discovered and nearly got sick over ? Unfortuantely the hose outside didn’t work, despite the helpful efforts from Noah, so I just dumped out the grossness & took it inside and wiped it down. I think as a team we are deciding to not carry milk around in our coolers anymore....
We had route meeting lead by Ryan & Mikey presented town facts. Since Ron and I have been trying to recruit each other, we were finally able to buddy up today and ride with Aiden & Carly as well. Once we got rolling, we had some rural roads followed by US1. While rolling on the rural hills I called “Car up!....not moving....not sure what they’re doing....” and as we slowed
his hazards flashed on. Slowing to a stop, the man in the truck popped out of his car into the ledge of his door and after looking back & forth with hand to forehead, he said in his deep southern accent “I reckon I just saw a black bear out there—y’all better go head and get goin’ now!” After riding past a bit, we all busted out in a great pool of laughter and we couldn’t help but keep repeating what he said in his accent ? It’s still a running joke with our team!
We rode on over the many repetitive bumps and had lunch outside at a high school under the shade of a single tree and sat on the good ol’ tarp. We were excited to eat some grapes, carrots & hummus, and cucumbers and continually talk about eating less goldfish, but who knows if that will happen. ? We then chamed up again & rolled on, motivated by the party to come. Though it was hot, we made it through and we’re pumped to already be done our ride for the day. It was great riding with Ron and learning more about his background, why
& how he found Bike & Build, and something that he was surprised to learn since joining our trip—how important alumni connections are!
We drank some Ale8s straight from Kentucky—much to Nora Jane’s pleasure—checked out the pony, snacked on some chips & watermelon, and jumped into the above ground pool. We, of course, had to make whirlpool and took turns holding Aiden like a child. With things to do & traffic starting, we loaded up the trailer with our bikes and headed north through Richmond to our host at the united Methodist church conference center. I jumped in the shower and then enjoyed the delicious dinner of taco salad ? These hosts have been hosting CUS for years and REALLY out did themselves and knew exactly what we all want & need.
After dinner, NJ shuttled us all downtown since there were a few local bars that were raffling off tickets throughout the day for a Eno hammock to benefit Bike & Build. One of them offered us free appetizers, but since the beers were expensive, we only did one round and then walked down the street to another bar that was appealing to the team because they
had $3 y’all PBRs. Though that’s not my choice drink and it was a bit more crowded, it was a nice environment and some people played some games. I chatted with NJ, Raffi, & Jana, NJ bought us a round (hooray for not having to stay in that line/crowd again!), and then we all migrated upstairs. Jess got into her ZONE and danced up a storm and it was wonderful to watch! At the point where we either had to drink or go to bed, we decided to head back to the host and call it a night. I was very grateful for that decision because I really didn’t want to spend any more money and was really tired.
Once we were back at the host, we tried to figure out how to turn off one of the lights in our conference room. Unfortunately it was a security light so we had to settle for sleeping under the floencent light—I guess we really can sleep anywhere!
