We woke up and made our way to the train station which was super close, I was happy to be in Frankfurt the night before my flight was leaving since it left more room for error, because things can and do go wrong! To make a case in point, Derrick and I almost boarded the wrong train to the airport, but like the rest of my trip, we fixed the mix-up just in the nick of time. (Even if we did miss the train we had left with plenty of time). We had a quiet ride to the airport, Derricks direct flight to Philadelphia left from a completely different terminal than my flight which had layovers in Ireland and Boston, so we parted ways at the airport. I had plenty of time so I wandered around ... read more

It seems like I have known of Virginia’s James River Plantations for my whole life. My knowledge was not based on the historical importance of the great plantations, but on my mom’s fond memories of spending time amongst them when she was a teenager. She had a friend whose parents lived there and she frequently got to visit. Here is the story in my mom’s own words: “Often we would go to Anne’s home in Charles City. Her parents rented a house that had been the caretaker’s residence on the Westover Plantation. They couldn’t buy the house because it was in the middle of the plantation but they didn’t want to live anywhere else. Anne’s mother was the one that introduced me to cream cheese and olive sandwiches. I love them still today. I used to ... read more

Geo: 37.5409, -77.4801Each year we like to take the kids on a big fishing trip on the James River. The James never disappoints with its large number of blue catfish, herring, shad, perch, striped bass, gar, channel catfish and other sporting breeds. We catch to photograph, not to eat, so we're not especially picky about what flops into the boat. The bigger, the better in general.Capt. Mike Ostrander of the James River Fishing School has been our guide of choice for many years. He has a wealth of knowledge about the history and ecology of the James and always seems to know where the fish will be biting. He also has the patience and sense of humor to guide and teach children well. This is a gift and it cannot be overvalued. In recent years Capt. Mike ... read more

Today, for the most part, was another day for rest, bills, and laundry. It did have one very significant cultural site. In 1898, Lewis Ginter, who had made a fortune in tobacco, decided to build the finest hotel in the world. It would show the world that Richmond had recovered from the devastation of the Civil War and was once again an equal of cities in the North. He named it after Thomas Jefferson. The hotel got on the world’s social calendar immediately, by hosting the marriage of Charles Dana Gibson, the patrician artist who created the Gibson Girl prints. The hotel remained a glorious place to stay until the Depression hit. A long slow decline followed, until new owners b... read more

Richmond Virginia is a very odd place culturally. Most of the city feels and acts like a modern regional capitol that is slowly being absorbed into the Washington DC exurbia. The rest feels like an important outpost of a distinct regional culture. This difference appears most dramatically where the Civil War is concerned. The former viewpoint sees the war as a complex conflict over many issues, particularly slavery, and discusses the less honorable parts of the southern war experience. The latter viewpoint sees the war as a highlight (WARNING: Link may be offensive) of everything that makes Southern culture distinctive and valuable (honor, valor, family, etc.) and celebrates Richmond as the Confederate capito... read more

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Today I visited one of the most important museums on the entire trip. I ended up spending the entire day there. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was founded very late by art museum standards, a mere 75 years ago. The devastation of the Civil War meant there was not enough wealth available before then in Virginia for art patronage. When I last visited, the museum was building a major expansion. The expansion is now open, and it held a very significant show. Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso is widely considered the most important artist of the 20th century. He is certainly the most well known. He painted some of the century’s most important works, including Les Demo... read more

We arrived in Washington DC on time, after being behind time for much of the trip; I don't know where and how Amtrak made up the time. We ate lunch at Union Station and then picked up our rental car. The parking lot at Washington DC Union Sation is quite extensive, we had quite a difficult time trying to find the rental car, up a couple of floors and across a bus depot. We got our car, a Nissan Cube and off we rolled. There was a terrific rain storm as we left the parking lot, I mean the rain was coming down as hard as rain can. And through this, we had to negotiate Washington DC traffic and find our way out of the city and south to Richmond, Virginia. Kris drove the Cube, I ... read more
