Geo: 37.5406, -77.4334After a 1-1/4 hour flight from Kigali (Rwanda) to Nairobi (Kenya), a 7 hour layover at the Nairobi Airport in the makeshift tents, 8 hour flight from Nairobi to Zurich, 6 hour layover in Zurich, 9-1/4 hour flight from Zurich to Dulles (DC), a mad dash to locate our bags and get through customs in DC, and a 50 minute flight from Dulles to Richmond, we made it home.It is good to be back but it was definitely a trip worth taking. I would highly recommend Natural Habitat Adventures for a 1st class travel agent for those who have interest. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will give you their contact info.... read more

Geo: 37.5409, -77.4801The planning of the trip to Africa started at the end of November. Now, after the closing of the US embassy in Rwanda from 8/4-8/10 (so far), a fire that burned down the international terminal in Kenya yesterday, and having my credit card closed yesterday due to "compromised activity" with my account, we are ready to go.We were supposed to leave for Newark at 12:55 pm but it was delayed until 2:30.Then, we fly from Newark to Zurich, Switzerland (8 hour flight). We fly through the night and arrive in Zurich tomorrow around 9:00 am.We are having drinks at the Newark airport, waiting to depart.... read more

Geo: 37.5406, -77.4334Just a quick note to say that my flights with Jet Blue from Richmond to Boston and from Boston to Portland were the closest thing to pleasant I've experience in air travel for some time. The flights were on time, the crew and gate staff were pleasant. I had a free bag in the cargo hold an I wasn't crammed like a sardine into my seat. Really, most of us don't ask for much. The snacks and drinks were freely and generously offered to boot. Also, the Boston airport has plenty of good walking area, free wifi and decent food options. Thank you, BOS!... read more

Richmond. That name brings back memories of being in my Uncle Wal's pool a little hour away from Sydney, nestled in the Blue Mountains. This Richmond is a little different. After our Megabus did a sweeping turn around a bend, me and my companions had finally arrived at our first stop of Spring Break - Richmond V.A. Situated under layers upon layers of railway tracks, we dragged our luggage into a Victorian inspired railway station, complete with memorabilia of Richmond's most famous resident, George Washington (maybe you've heard of him). Then we made a realisation, our motel was 20 minutes from the downtown area of Richmond. This meant getting a taxi. A lovely Taxi Driver pulled up by the name of Millard. Millard, a single father who runs the Gold Crown Taxi service on his own, ... read more

So I have finally begun packing, yet still it's challenging not to do the usual wait till the last night to get everything done routine. I probably should have done a little more research and planning, o well I guess I'm going to stick with my original plan to just wing it. I have 90 days to stay in the eu so Im going to have to make my time there count... And just head to Asia a little sooner that I had planned. All part of the adventure. So the plan as of now (everything is subject to change ((the whole winging concept))) is to begin my trip by flying into Belgium for the first 2 weeks of June and spending a little time with mamma Taylor. Then I head to Amsterdam to eithier watch ... read more

I had intended to call this post something else..but in light of the days events, the Bugs Bunny quotes is far more appropriate. So we got off to a late start. Mis-communiction often leads to delay and it seems today is not different. Once we were under way we made reasonably good time…until, as we approached Hartford, the GPS was nagging us to turn for Route 91 and Craig saw the sign which read “New York City”…which he quickly determined the he did not like. “I don’t want to go to NYC!”. We (OK, he!) made a snap decision which involved taking an unplanned detour with no maps to support us. Hey, it is an adventure after all.. Eventually we capitulated, gave in to the unceasing complaints of the GPS and got back on track.. We ... read more

We have handed over authorship of this post to our temporary travelling companion, and permanent daughter, who has joined us for a few weeks to check out just a little of the USA. Coming off a 27 hour journey from Brisvegas, being accosted at the JFK Airport arrival gate by Kenny Rogers and his much younger third wife was a bit of a surprise. Then I rubbed my tired eyes and they turned into my parents. Phew. Given that they knew where the hotel was, I was glad they made it to the terminal to get me. Sadly my request to be met with cheesy fries had been ignored, a disappointment I did my best to get over by remembering I was in New York (New York!). Overnight in Jamaica, the suburb next to the airport, ... read more

Geo: 37.5406, -77.4334Just a quick note to put a capstone on the blog. Our flight didn't take off until 12:45pm, so we had time to go out and pick up food for breakfast and lunch. Alex and Mom walked about a mile to a grocery to grab stuff for sandwiches, keeping in mind that drinks would be forbidden and that fresh fruits and meats couldn't enter Texas. Continental did give us some food and we made peanut butter and guava jam sandwiches to keep for an emergency, along with the kids' favorite galletas mantequillas (butter cookies). The hotel taxi guy tried to overcharge for the drive to the airport. Mom shut him down and gave him what the hotel web site said it should cost. Keep in mind that Costa Rica has an international exit tax. It's ... read more
