Two Guys a Girl and a Backpack each

After deferring an engineering degree, Gell, decided to join two unemployed Arts graduates, Stokesy and Bubbles for a wild ride around the large blue and slightly greenish brown expanse we like to call earth.

Oh Canada!!

Published: April 3rd 2007North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver

It’s been a while but we’re back to wrap up our North American adventure with a look at the good (snowboarding), the bad (Canadian beer) and the ugly (again the beer). We started in Canada by meeting up with Heather and her friend Amy and getting ridiculously drunk, Canadian style. We followed that by getting up early the next morning to catch a bus to Big White Ski Resort near Kelowna, BC. This was the start of a week snowboarding which was awesome but very painful. Having never snowboarded we took lessons for the first couple of days before letting loose on the slopes on our own. Overall we did pretty well apart from a few bumps and bruises, some strained muscles and the flu. But as they say on the mountain “If you’re not ... read more

We eventually hobbled into South Dakota after two and a half days of driving and then straight to Walmart to get our driver’s side rear tyre replaced. After this slight setback we went to the famous Mt Rushmore to have a look at four of the president’s heads which are carved in stone in the Black Hills of South Dakota. After our initial shock that George Bush Snr or George Bush Jnr weren’t included we got down to some sight seeing. There wasn’t much to see other than the mountain. The presidents that make up Mt Rushmore are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It is a very impressive American landmark and was probably just about worth the two and a half days drive. On our way out of South Dakota we stopped ... read more

As the title suggests San Francisco is full of hills and they are all too bloody steep. The first day we thought that an old fashioned walk around San Fran would be in order. We started by walking from our hostel in Union Square (downtown) out to the famous Golden Gate Bridge. We walked up and down, up and down and then up and down again and we finally got to the bridge. Being on foot our only option to get across the bridge was to walk. So we walked the approximately 1.2kms across to get some great views of San Fran from the other side and then walked back again. We oohhed and aahhed at the bridge for a while as it is a very impressive bridge. After this we wanted some lunch so we ... read more

We arrived in LA at our hostel in Hollywood to find more Aussies there than exist in the whole of the Perth metro area and being the international men of mystery that we are, we found 4 other guys from Perth to drink with. LA hostel takes the cake for Aussies per capita, make that gross amount of Aussies, out of any hostel we have stayed at so far. The hostel organised a walking tour today of the Beverly Hills and Bel Aire areas of LA so that insignificant people like us could gaze in amazement at the huge houses and frivolous security systems of the rich and famous. We walked past houses occupied by Jerry Lee Lewis (before he died), Freddie Mercury (before he died), Marilyn Monroe (before she died in the house), Frank Sinatra ... read more

Our first day in San Diego consisted two parts. The first was a walk downtown and the second was a superbowl party. Firstly to downtown. This is one of the nicer cities we have visited thus far mainly because of the weather. The whole time we were there it didn’t get below about 10C. Downtown is really nice with a Gaslamp Quarter devoted to the historic section and a riverfront with parks and shops. We walked through both areas before heading to Balboa Park which is where the zoo is located. We didn’t go in but we walked around the park which has some cool Spanish architecture amidst some manicured gardens. After that we went back to the hostel for a superbowl party they had organised with a free keg. The keg lasted to the end ... read more

The City of Sin

Published: February 6th 2007North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas

We rolled into Las Vegas after a long drive from Santa Fe with the need of an early night after our sleep deprived stay in Dallas. What we found was a town that didn’t open until midday and then stayed opened until the early hours of the morning. Las Vegas is everything you see on tv plus much, much more with the strip illuminated by the neon signs of the megaresorts. We got into our the Excalibur hotel which is located right next to some of the biggest casinos in Vegas including Mandalay Bay, Luxor, New York New York, MGM Grand and Tropicana. We went for a little exploration down the strip and ended up at the very tacky (but very cheap) Circus Circus which has a $12 buffet and circus acts running all the time ... read more

The Big D

Published: February 3rd 2007North America » United States » Texas » Dallas

Some of you might be saying “What about Houston?” I am omitting that city due to a complete lack of anything interesting. We visited their number one tourist attraction which is a shopping mall that is the 4th biggest in the USA. The last night we were there Emma had to leave for her next destination, AFTRS in Sydney, so now all you hear about is Ian and Nick’s antics. Emma, you’re calming voice of reason will be sorely missed. We rolled into Dallas, or The Big D as the locals call it, and headed straight downtown via the trusty (but not so frequent) train service. It was Australia Day eve so a few drinks were in order. We headed uptown via the trolley to a pub doing a happy hour $2 beer special. Excellent. Happy ... read more

I lie, we start this journey in Louisville, Kentucky but most of it takes place in Tennessee. Louisville was originally planned to be an overnight stop off on the way to Nashville but we found two cool places there that play a major part in the sporting culture of the USA. The first was the factory and birthplace of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat which is used by a lot of the best players in the world. The factory has a huge 120 ft bat out the front and is in downtown Louisville. We had a look inside and Ian had a go at the batting cages with a genuine Louisville Slugger. He had a few swings and misses at first but once he got into the “swing” of it (excuse the pun) he had some ... read more

We left Toronto headed for Detroit Rock City. On the way however we hit a slight glitch with some -9C temperatures and snow. The tortoise was performing to its maximum capacity although this didn’t include heating and we were all freezing and losing feeling in our outer appendages. The snow subsided and we eventually reached the border. We couldn’t resist the duty free again. Ian got a $15 bottle of 1L Jim Beam Black and Gell really lived it up with a litre of Bacardi 151 which is, as the label states, 151 proof (about 75% alc). This stuff could actually be used as rocket fuel. The border crossing took slightly longer coming back into the USA with their over zealous border control and customs officers who think they’re comedians. When we told him we were ... read more

Toronto: The Raleigh Of Canada

Published: January 19th 2007North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto

Toronto: The Raleigh Of Canada We finished up at Boston and with a full days driving ahead of us to get to Niagara Falls, Well so was the plan. Gell started off driving out of Boston and onto the Massachusetts Turnpike to begin what should have been a six hour sojourn along a fairly non descript highway. About an hour or two down the road we pulled over to get fuel, to have Gell ask to swap drivers, before getting out of the car and blowing chunks all over the interstate (Surprisingly he wasn’t hung over). After a brief rest Gell returned to the car a pleasant shade of yellow. Sarah jumped behind the wheel for her first experience with the tortoise and we were on the way again. Alas we only made it down to ... read more
