Well its the night before the flight to India so we thought we had better add some photos of our stay in Dubai, its been very hot the whole time thank goodness for air conditioning though we know this wont be the case everywhere. The beach was amazing with the water very very warm. The malls and the hotels are out of this world, as are the souks the gold souk was really good though henry didnt enjoy them when i told him i could spend all our trip money there, I was good didn't buy a thing though we did buy 2 new cameras in one of the millions of electrical stores, one underwater one which will be cool for surfing, not that there is any here hahaha poor henry. we have been sledging in ... read more

When I mentioned to my mother-in-law that I thought Dubai was like Las Vegas, she laughed and said, ‘More like Las Vegas on hormones!’ It was time to find out for myself. Here’s what I discovered on my trip last week... Barat the Builder Dubai is still being built. A quarter of the world’s cranes are in Dubai and construction is absolutely everywhere. This means road directions are rendered useless and it’s all too easy to find yourself going the wrong way up a one-way street because the No Entry sign is hidden behind hoardings. Everywhere you go there are signs apologising for the inconvenience, which led me to think that one cover-all sign at the airport, warning visitors that they’re entering a construction site, might be a good idea. The Toddler, nevertheless, will love the ... read more

Got up early today and spent some time talking to the bell hop that works here. Really nice guy Told me about the big earthquake which rocked this region in 99 and that it killed 100,000 people. He seemed to be quite hardened by it and was obviously affected by it somehow. He works here 12hrs/day 6 days per week for 650 Turkish Lira or 500.00 per month. He likes to practice his english with westerners. We had the Sporapi Cup Finals today and Joe placed 84th, Simon was 134th and Dave was 138th. Our purpose was only to prep for the World cup so hopefully we are ready to go and place better. The Germans came in 1st, the Americans were 2nd, and Ukraines were 3rd. Three of us on our team were asked by ... read more

Amman is a very typical Middle Eastern city, at least the Middle East I know. It is very clean, cool and nobody is trying to sell you something all the time like Egypt. I spent a week five days in Amman and although there is not much to do beside visiting the old places and the museum, the city is lovely. ... read more

Today was the first Day of the Sporapi Cup and I felt like I was going to Sporapi all over. I didn't get the first launch off but it turns out there was a signal infraction and we got a re-fly. So nothing lost. Once our captain got me re-focused it was smooth sailing for the rest of the day. 33 degrees but a slight breeze. We are using this tournament to work out the bugs for the World Cup starting on Monday our time. Our flyers had some good flights and some bad ones but will be fine tuning tomorrow as well. I now have my confidence up where it should be. There is so much to learn in a sport you have no Clue about. I'm learning lots and now beginning to have fun ... read more

Hi, Sorry for the radio silence, I am alive and kicking in Turkey! Following an exciting and communist collector item fuelled trip to Sofia (and a trip to the beautiful mosiac filled Rila Monastary), I got the remainder of the Orient Express to Istanbul. Apparently there was drama at the Turkish border at 3am, and lots of American tourists complaining that the border guard had taken their passports and *shock horror* they were out of sight (in the polis station). I missed the whole thing by sleeping with earplugs, waking up with 10 mins to train departure time, sauntering out and getting my visa and stamp while the Americans were running around the platform like headless chickens. They were all traumatised. Poor things. So, the heat of Turkey! Delicious delicious Turkey. Home to Baklava, Turkish delight ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Mediterranean » Olympos June 27th 2008

About halfway along Turkeys Mediterranean coast lies Olympos, a favourite beach destination for Turks and backpackers alike. The water here is a clear pale blue, it is warm, and the lack of tide and waves make it an ideal swimming spot, which makes the unbearable heat bearable. Behind the beach the Lycian city of Olympos lies in ruins. İt flourished from the 2nd century BC, when the Olympians worshipped Hephaestus, the god of fire. This probably has something to do with the chimaera on nearby Mt Olympos. There is gas trapped in the base of the mountain which finds its way out of various pores throughout the mountain and spontaneously combusts upon contact with the air. Flames have been continually spouting out of the mountain for thousands of years. The Romans took over in the 1st ... read more
