Yazd is a small oasis city in southern central Iran, in the middle of the desert. The landscape during the journey from Esfahan did not look like it changed much in seven hours, though admittedly I was not looking out of the window all the time, allowing the bus to rock me to sleep. The city's water comes from underground qanats miles away in the mountains. Here the women are almost exclusively dressed in chadors and the men a little too friendly! The weather is hot, hot at 35 degrees C, but as a dry heat was bearable as long as you were not too Gilbert and Sullivan about it. Water ran everywhere though. And, like all over Iran, many street corners have their water cisterns where you can refill your water bottle. It is fine to ... read more

Hi, everyone!! Hope this note finds you all well and enjoying the summer. It feels strange for me not to be thinking about the upcoming holiday as I would usually do - have something to do with it not really being celebrated here?? Anyway, enjoy the long weekend and be safe... Tuesday June 24, 2008 I think today’s theme is “lost.” No, not the TV series, but the way this day turned out in so many ways. At the peshat (Hebrew for “surface”) level, I got lost several times roaming the streets. And this time, I wasn’t happy about doing so! Put me in the Old City and I’m happy to get lost, but not where I went today. I decided to check out the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim where one is transposed back in ... read more

This was my first flight ever, I had taken in my entire life. Luck by chance the ticket my company bought for myself was in one of the well known Airlines of world, The Emirates. I was not so familiar with the name for obvious reasons, however, i was still very excited to take the Window seat. Short yet beautiful time, got a half bottle wine to relish.... read more

Well we had a prep day and registration for the Worlds and did some practise flying. The day was going well till Joe buried his plane in the trees (Small poplar used for pulp). Some damage but he seems to feel it is fixable. I guess it was a misjudgment on his approach. We had the opening ceremonies and all marched on to the field in our own respective countries. It was quite well done and I will post the video on this when I return. Sorry for no pictures. I have had no time to get to it. We are going to be having some early mornings and late nights as there is flying from 8am to 7pm daily for the next 5 days. We have recruited Marco from the German team to help us ... read more

It’s amazing how quickly you can settle into a place. The language barrier is huge but we are managing. This is a place where “eh” means yes, “la” means no and a written 7 means 6!!! We have even had our first emergency Arabic lesson which was, shall we say, interesting!! Work wise it’s been a bit of a culture shock. We last taught in Argentina back in December so being back in the classroom was a little strange at first. We soon got used to it and are fully into the swing of teaching a full 24 or so hours a week. With the paperwork and planning it works out to about a 35 hour week but the offices are air conditioned so the 41 degrees of sunshine outside isn’t really affecting us. It’s been ... read more

After our mishap in Schenzen we had a great Emirates flight, found a hotel and decided to take a little nap before exploring the city! However our bodies had other plans as our two hour nap turned into seven and we woke up at ten at night! Apparently the missed night of sleep and all the excitement caught up to us! After room service and tv, we arranged for a bus tour the next day so we could see as much as possible in the few hours we had left! Dubai is a beautiful city and definatly the richest one we have seen on our travels. We were able to see a mosque, which runs a program to help people understand Islam better, the infamous seven star hotel, the rich appartments on Palm Islands (man made ... read more

The reason I traveled to Baghdad was for the Medical Service Corp in-service. It was designed to be for all Medical Service Corp to network and share ideas. The conference was a good experience. I met lots of my counterparts who operate at various bases in theater. I even ran into a LT who I attended officer basic course with three years ago. She taps me on the back and says do you remember me? I couldn’t believe what a small Army it is. Especially considering that she is National Guard and I am Reserve - the Army isn’t even our full time job. The topic of discussion at the conference was leadership and professionalism. I learned some and was even able to contribute some too. We had a cake to celebrate the 91st birthday for ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Bodrum June 30th 2008

So, we are back from our aegean cruise through the Greek islands! To highlight, we went to Mykonos, Kos, Syros, Paros, Kalymnos, and Bodrum in Turkey. It was a budget cruise put on by the budget airline company; easyjet. And it was worth every penny. Booking ahead, for two people, getting your own room with a bathroom and everything, it was about 112 pounds, or 224 dollars. That's about 112 dollars per person. Which if you think about it, is less than the price of accomodation for 6 nights most of the time. So it was a bargain. Food is not included, but it's actually not that expensive aboard, and the good thing about the cruise, is that it sails in the early morning, and you get to spend all day, and most of the night, ... read more
