Well, that’s it! We’re back! Very tired, very skint and happy to be here, not! This morning we finished packing and had a last healthy breakfast. We then took a slow drive to the airport, which was only about 15 miles from our hotel. Fifteen days and nearly 2000 miles later I handed the car back to the rental company in one piece. There were a couple of times during the last 2 weeks when it could have been in more than one piece, particularly in Los Angeles, but luckily we came through unscathed. We had to remove shoes and belts to go through customs, and liquids and gels are still forbidden in large quantities, but we were processed quite quickly. Sam didn’t think that the large can of energy drink he was carrying in his ... read more

Ciao! Early Tuesday morning I took a stroll alone and stumbled across Via Vittorio Veneto. I walked down the grand avenue and noticed that it is lined with luxury hotels, shops and cafes. There is even a Harry’s Bar. I was thrilled, as the avenue was clean; there was no graffiti on the buildings and not a gypsy in sight. It reminded me of Santana Row back home. I also noticed that there were many good looking Italian men dressed in expensive suits. Yes! I couldn’t wait to get back and tell the rest of what I found, especially Skye. I would have to put off strolling back down Vittorio Veneto, as we had a tour planned for the Vatican Museum and Basilica of St. Peter’s both located in Vatican City. Vatican City is a small ... read more

First of all, thanks to all of you still reading this. I know its been a while since I updated this and then the server for the site went down or something. But the worst part is, all of my previous blogs were lost since they were written in the last 3 months :( So if for some reason anyone printed them or saved them, please keep them and let me know. Anyway here´s the message I had written earlier about our wonderful trip to London!!! Hey, finally an update from yours truly. I know its been awhile, but I guess the server I've been using has been down. But I'm being smart about it. I'm writing up the file now and I'll save it so all I have to do later is copy and paste ... read more

As the heat-wave in Southern Europe was now into its second week we were keen for some cooler weather so decided to head to Switzerland even though it had not been one of our original destinations. We therefore caught the train north from Como to Lucerne. The first thing we noticed when we got off the train at Lucerne station was that it was noticeably cooler (although it was still going to get quite hot later in the day), and the second thing we noticed was that people were now speaking German. If our Italian was limited our German was almost non-existent as all we knew were 'please' and 'thank you'. We spent one night in Lucerne and really enjoyed it. It is a very picturesque city, situated on Lake Lucerne. It has a lovely old ... read more

More gray and cold. Ugh. Though the weather hasn’t been great we have been fortunate that our time in Belgium has prepared us for this sort of climate. And of course it just brings me back to my time here in 1995; it has felt like October for the past two days. Jonathan was voting for a trip to Pfaueninsel (peacock island) despite the weather. I think I overruled him however and it was a good thing. It was a cold and windy day and once again everyone had multiple layers of t-shirts to try and stay warm. We decided to go to the puppet museum which sounded really cool with the exhibits and shows. It took three train transfers to get there (though it was just more time out of the cold and it was ... read more

Hi there happy bloggers! Well last we updated we were in Cesis in Latvia. Beautiful little town where we stayed three nights. From there we went by train to Villnus (the capital of Lithuania) where we stayed in the old town in a room with a balcony overlooking a little courtyard. It was actually the living room of an apartment and the "bed" was a fold-out sofa... a bit hard and not so comfortable! The city is quite nice with a large cathedral and square in the centre backing onto a hill with a medieval castle atop. Certainly an improvement from Riga! We had a couple of days there organising the next leg of the trip and taking in the sights of the old city (17th century buildings and cobblestone streets) and university. Again this ... read more

7-31-07 It indeed was a very interesting night! I had put the ear plugs in and slept pretty good for a couple hours and then around 4, I awoke to the snoring. My ear plugs had fallen out and the extreme tiredness that I felt when I first went to bed was absent. I knew sleeping would be difficult. I got up and decided to walk around the ship for awhile. As I walked down stairs to the main shopping area a lady that was sitting on a bench said something to me. I went over to her and talked to her for a bit while pretty much still asleep. She obviously wanted to talk. She said her son was staying with someone from Helsinki and they were on their way to pick him up. He ... read more

The rain has finally stopped (It had been raining almost everyday since early June), so I decided to do something different and go to work by bicycle. Started early (7am) to avoid the traffic. Nice sunny, although a bit cool in the morning (13 degrees). The cycling was incredibly easy. There were bicycle along most of the way. One third of the trip went through special bicycle paths in parks (Hyde Park & Green Park). One I arrived in the city, I went through bicycle lanes. Some streets are reserved to buses (and cycles). There is very little car traffic. Arrived at work after 35 minutes, quicker than by train. At work, I can park the bicycle, have a shower, and then I'm ready. This is a nice way to start the day. Good excercise to ... read more
