After our two and a half weeks of relaxing in Phuket we headed to Singapore for the final 3 days of our trip. We arrived around midday on Saturday, and didn't do a lot on the first afternoon as it was raining - something it did the whole time we were there. Our hotel was located at one end of Orchard Rd so we did a bit of shopping while we were there, as well as the usual tourist bus tour of the city. We caught the train into Clarke Quay on our first night in town and had a very enjoyable dinner sitting overlooking the river. Afterwards we wandered around the river, through the restaurant strip in Boat Quay where the spruikers out the front of the restaurants just wouldn't say no, and then caught ... read more

We left Dubai about 8.30 in the evening and flew to Hong Kong, arriving around 6am the next morning. We had a three hour stopover so we spent the time in the Qantas Club and read our first Australian newspapers for nearly 9 months. We then flew to Singapore where we spent a night at Changi Village (which is not far from the airport) as we couldn't get a flight to Phuket until the next day. On Wednesday we flew Thai Air Asia to Phuket. We spent three nights in Patong Beach before heading a couple of kilometres out of town to the Le Meridian Resort for a couple of weeks of R&R. I mean after being on holidays for 8 and a half months it was just we needed. This resort is definitely the place ... read more

It was a chilly English morning, 0 degrees in fact, and after scraping the ice off our hire car we left Northampton at 7.30 am and set off for what we thought would be a 90 minute trip to Heathrow to catch our flight to Dubai. Unfortunately there was some serious traffic on the M1, and three hours later we dropped our hire car off and made a mad dash to check in. After finding out British Airways had no record of our preferred seating, or in fact of anything to do with our membership of the One World alliance (they wanted to charge us extra baggage at one stage), they allocated us two of the last 5 seats remaining, right down the back of the plane near the toilets(definitely not our favourite airline). When we ... read more

Foe the last 5 months, as we have been travelling around Europe, we have been lucky enough to have a base at Guy's brother's flat in Northampton. In all we have spent 34 days there over 5 different visits, washing, planning the next leg of the trip, booking flights and accomodation, and generally enjoying being away from hotels for a short period (in other words we have taken over Mark's computer, kitchen and TV - we're not sure what we would have done if we didn't have this base). In that time we have come to know Northampton reasonably well, although haven't really seen a lot of England. We visited Oxford in June for a day (it rained - not really surprising) and spent a couple of days in London in August where we went to ... read more

From Lisbon we flew to Paris, the final destination of the European part of our trip. Paris is a great city, and probably our favorite city in Europe. It is big and has plenty to do and see, but it also very picturesque, and seems much more relaxed than other big cities. It is also very clean in comparison to other cities in Europe. We had booked an apartment in quite a good location, near the Forum Des Halles, only a 5 minute walk from the river and Notre-Dame Cathedral, and within easy walking distance of The Louvre. The apartment was on the edge of a pedestrianised area, and downstairs were cafes, restaurants and bars. It was all very lively and packed with people during the day, but the apartment was surprisingly quiet at night. We ... read more

From Madrid we flew to Lisbon where we spent a very pleasant few days. We didn't really know what to expect of Lisbon, but it turned out to be a lovely city. It was picturesque, had enough attractions to keep us busy for a couple of days (and we could have done with more time there), and after the hussle and bussle of Madrid the slower, more relaxed pace was a welcome change. The weather was also very good while we there, with bright sunny days and maximum temperatures of around 23 or 24 degrees, although it did get quite cool at night. To top it all off there was the bluest sky we had seen for quite a while, which contrasted nicely with the many coloured buildings in the city. Our hotel was well located ... read more

From Cordoba we caught another fast train to Madrid where we stayed for 5 days. The fast train really is the way to go; although relatively expensive it took just under 2 hours to cover the 420 kilometres. From the main train station it was then only 2 short metro rides to our hotel, which was reasonably well located near the centre of the main shopping streets, and not far from a number of the major sights of the city. Madrid had less appeal to us compared to other parts of Spain and other cities in Europe. It was big and dirty and very, very crowded. We didn’t feel very safe walking around. The pedestrianised shopping streets that ran from the Grand Via (one of the major roads through the city) to the Plaza del Sol, ... read more

From Marbella we caught a bus to Seville, about 220 kms north-west, stopping on the way at a small town called Ronda which looked interesting and where it would have been nice to spend a couple of hours looking around. After a 4-hour bus journey we arrived in Seville where we had struggled to find accommodation. We ended up booking a studio apartment right in the centre of the city which was quite noisy at night. What we weren't told was that the studio apartment didn't even have a proper bed, only a very small fold-up couch/sofa bed that was about 40 years old with springs that you could feel in every part of your body every time you moved. Still, it was a good location with all the shops and restaurants right at your doorstep, ... read more

October 22nd 2007

From Barcelona we flew to Malaga on the Costa del Sol and boarded a bus for the beach resort of Nerja, about 1.5 hours north east from Malaga. We had decided in Barcelona that we needed a week on the beach and Nerja had sounded like the sort of place we wanted, and we weren't disappointed. It was a lovely town, large enough to have plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops to keep us busy, but small enough to be quiet and peaceful. We found a lovely, cheap 2-star hotel with friendly, if slightly vague, reception staff (after staying there for a week we would walk in and they wouldn't recognise us and they only had 20 rooms), and settled in for a relaxing week. We happened to be in Nerja for their annual festival ... read more

On Saturday 29th September we flew to Gerona airport in Spain, and then caught a bus to Barcelona, where we spent a very enjoyable 6 nights. The apartment that we had booked was located in the Barri Gotic quarter, just off The Ramblas, the famous pedestrian boulevard that cuts through the heart of the city. The Ramblas, and the streets that run off from it, are full of shops, restaurants, tapas bars, Irish & Australian pubs. They are also jam packed with people, a combination of tourists and locals. There was plenty to see and do in Barcelona. We went to see La Sagrada Familia, a huge cathederal designed by Antoni Gaudi that has been under construction since 1882. It is not expected to be completed for another 30 years or so, well over budget and ... read more
