Francy - Francine

Francine This blog aims to tell our story of our time exploring and learning in the UK. We are expecting to discover new places to explore, new adventures to experience and many lessons to learn (with loads of ups and downs) We hope to eventually return with a renewed sense of appreciation for what we have and the knowledge that we took on a challenge with passion, a sense of adventure and wonder, and some courage..and returned to tell the tale.
We're making this blog as a personal record so our daughters will always have a reminder of their adventure, to let our family and friends at home in Australia see what we are up to (so they don't forget us) and also to help anyone who may want to relocate to London with their children . We are happy to help!

Two week trip to central NSW. From to Sydney to Geurie (20 km south of Dubbo) to visit friends . Stopped off half way at Kelso Pub (Just at beginning of Bathurst ) for a nice break and lunch. Spent a week with friends at their "resort" home called Possum Ridge. Guerie is a cute town with great houses and cottages, all with those beautiful wide verandahs wrapped around the properties. We climbed Bald Hill in 15 mins or so and enjoyed an amazing view from the top. Many people in Geurie grow their own produce and had chickens, etc. You [View Full Entry]

Lauren turned 10 yesterday and celebrated with dinner at home and some presents. Her favourite is a marionette. Today we took her to The Rainforest Cafe for lunch and to the open air ice skating rink at Somerset House (the ice skating season just started yesterday. The weather is good for it...this morning it was minus 2 and the highest temperature of the day was 3. Both great but photos are best for description. She was very happy with the day and both girls are now playing happily sorting her new stamp album and playing with a marionette. Congratulations to Australia [View Full Entry]

Roma Day 2  Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
Today we spent visiting Imperial Rome. We began with the Colosseum which was Herve's best part of the trip Mine was St Clement's church and the Pantheon (for Lauren it was St Peters and the gelato, for Christine it was the Trevi Fountain and the pizza). We took the audio guide for the girls but they thought it was pretty dry and boring so we just wandered around and imagined the days of gladiators, hungry lions and the poor slaves, criminals and Christians who had to face both in these enormous grounds. Since Herve and I last visited Rome (we are [View Full Entry]

You couldn't beat these mountains above the clouds for a view to pass the time.
I cannot begin to describe how amazing Rome is. We had heard a lot, obviously it's got great history, sites, relics, birth of Christianity etc but also crime, street kid gangs, beggars, thieves, rip off artists and other rorts. Well, maybe it was just good luck but we saw precious little of any of this. The Italians were all polite, helpful to the point of being charming, gorgeous (well, I already knew this) well dressed and they love children so much that we got all this special treatment as we are a family. We skipped queues, were given seats on crowded [View Full Entry]

Wales This was a short trip of four days. AS usual we hired a car which we picked up from Heathrow and drove out of London. We stayed in a cute old fashioned home on a farm in South Wales. The farm was large and had many animals and some fairly rabid looking dogs locked up in barns and trucks. I assume New South Wales was named after this area and in fact there were some similarities to the area south of Sydney. You can see for yourself what you think. It was mostly for a relaxing holiday as everyone was [View Full Entry]

Welsh place names: always good for a guessing game.

Hampton Court Palace is an hour on the train from London and on the day we visited there were events on for kids (make a hat, dress up etc) and period actors strolling around so history was brought to life for everyone. The Palace was a present to King Henry'VIII The outfits the girls tried on would have been the type of dress worn by monarchs or very wealthy ladies from the Tudor period: Jane Grey, Mary and Elizabeth. The place is said to be haunted by a number of ghosts. http://www.castleofspirits.com/hamptoncourt.html There is a pretty cool maze, very interesting kitchens [View Full Entry]

Way behind on these blogs. This week saw in Halloween and also Bonfire night. Let me tell you that shops in Australia have nothing on the English version of Halloween decorations. (for want of a better word) Body parts that look extremely realistic, masks done so well they are scarey even hanging up slack on a rack and all sorts of fantastic animals, spiders and makeup. (scars etc) Both events are kind of sinister for different reasons. We have never even acknowledged Halloween before so it was kind of exciting to see it here. To be honest, I thought Halloween was [View Full Entry]

This week was when my parents came to London on their big world adventure from Sydney, Hong Kong, London, Boston, San Fransisco and finally my cousin's wedding in San Martin, California. Pretty much around the whole world! It is a beautiful time to visit the Northern hemisphere as autumn is in full swing and, although it is colder, the trees are looking stunning. It is possibly the thing I love most in our whole time of living in London. We have vines falling all over our windows and it is a great pleasure to watch them change colour each day. Highlight this week has been a London walk (last time we did a London pub walk so this one, called "The Real Harry Potter" was one for the kids. WE went with our friends and learned all about the orin=gins of some of the names and characters from the Rowling books. Great fun and interesting. We saw the inspiration for Diagon Alley (Porchester Ave, where people go to learn about white and black magic, see photo and imagine...) and saw the pub where Alistair Crawley hung out (who wore a dark cloak covered with symbols of the occult and thought that [View Full Entry]

It's starting to feel like the home stretch even though we have another 3 and a half months in England. All of us found it a bit hard to come back from the Summer break. It's always a bit of a struggle getting back into the rhythm after a nice holiday but it seemed to be a little depressing coming back "home" to our little London flat, instead of our real home in Sydney. Luckily that feeling has passed as we all got busy fairly quickly. I'm also appreciating the English a little more as I meet more and get to [View Full Entry]
