We had a wonderful historical and cultural day in this small centre about 1/2 hour's drive from Tours. You may know it as the city where Francois Rabelais lived. He was actually born in the small town of Deviniere outside of Chinon which we visited. A lot of it was in its original state, including an immense underground cave. I didn't realize that in addition to being a writer, Rabelais was also a doctor, philosophe... read more

I'm having many culinary adventures here! Need I say it? THE FOOD AND WINE ARE EXCELLENT! Cooking for one is not easy, but I'm managing quite well. I'm staying in a university residence which has some communal kitchens. The good news is that they are kept clean and clear. The bad news is that nothing can be left in them--no food, no utensils, no equipment, no garbage. The rules are so strick that if anyone leaves a mess, the administration closes that kitchen for a couple of days. So far, so good. Today, I went to the big market: about 3 city blocks in size: both inside and outside. The produce, meat, cheese were amazing. I bought some local strawberries--they rival our coastal BC ones. I stopped at a portable meat market and bought a veal ... read more

Yesterday was spent in Katakolon, the port that cruise ships dock in so that their passengers can go to Olympia. True to character, we chose to forgo the historically significant site because “that history stuff bores us”. We chose instead to make a brief venture off of the ship to the fishing village of Katakolon to do a little bit of shopping and have some coffee. Another beautiful Greek village. Mom bought some gold earrings with the Greek key symbol from a really nice jewelry store on the main street. I had to protect her from the pushy salesman so that she wouldn’t buy anything else. After he pushed and pushed and pushed for her to buy a matching bracelet, I finally said “she has already spent too much money on her earrings, if she buys ... read more

First off, Benj, YES! Döner Kebobs or Dönar Kebops (I've seen them spelled both ways here) are amazing! I would have gotten one today for dinner, but my bus came before I had a chance. Ok, today. Today I went to a small town in the Black Forest called Alpirsbach. It has one of the oldest Klosters (monistaries) in Germany and also one of the oldest still running beer brewries. I, along with four other people (two other students, the boyfriend of one of the other students, and a guy that works at SIT and is a student at the Tübingen Universität, this guy is named Florian and he leads all of the excursions and also was my guide around Tübingen my first day here) went through the monistary, a museum, and the brewery. It was ... read more

Well it's been a while since our last update, haven't been up to much just chilling out and saving some cash for the main event. A few months ago we went to Galway so we're catching up on that one. Zoe was the driver this time. I lost a couple of years of my life to many near misses. Na, she was very good but the navigating was exceptional (yep, we had good road signs to follow this time). It was very nice, a place that everyone over here goes on their hens and bucks nights. So you could imagine that there was a lot of drunk people. The Cliffs of Moher were a lot like the Apostles in Oz but very nice. They had a lot of shops built in to the hills, very cool. ... read more

Just got in from a long day! This morning we woke up pretty early and went for breakfast again on the terrace. We had some more croissants with jelly & orange juice, and I also ordered some yogurt. The yogurt was unlike anything I have ever seen! It came out in a big brown jar (nothing like the plastic cups we get in America) and it was completely natural- not at all processed. It looked like it came straight from the farm! It was so good. After breakfast, we walked over to the Musee D’Orsay. On the way we saw the cutttttesttttt brown toy poodle(although Prince Charles is still way cuter). We had been on the lookout for a “French poodle” since we have been here but I couldn’t get my camera out in time to ... read more

I had a bit of a surley night of drinking, and saying good bye to my new little irish buddy, rob. he's headed to naples first, so ill get the low-down on the town from him. Today i started off where i left off the day before. I walked all of what is considered the city centre. saw the pantheon, which was pretty amazing. parliment was nice, and the castel san angelo was really neat. i walk up the river and wandered into some kind of horse festival. i remember the smell mostly.PU! climbed up the hill at pincio and found a great vista of the vatican. i was at one point only 4 blocks from vatican city, but the plam is to go tomorrow when its free. it would be hard to even guess how ... read more

Everything worked out today. We woke up by 5am and were ready for the taxi (12 Euros) when it arrived at 5:30am. Got to the airport ontime and they didn´t even weigh our luggage, much less our backpacks. Phew... since we were surely over the 20 kilos per bag and/or 6 kilos per carry on. The young man in front of us had two bags, so the lady weighed them and at 34 kilos, he was told he owed 138 Euros extra! We arrrived in Athens and boarded our ontime flight to Madrid. They served a decent brunch of cream and mushrooms crepe, spinach pastry, croissant and muffin. We arrived in Madrid with a four hour wait, so we had capuccinos and shopped. The Madrid airport is laid out strangely. They have T1, T2, T3, and ... read more

Just a really nice time hanging out with Nicky & Toby and family, watching Eurovision - why did Estonia not get through, that was a cracking entry! - (and the football, although I have to say that I wasn't paying much attention to that). Getting my head in gear for trip to Venice next week... looking forward to that, it all depends on the crowd that turns up on the day!... read more
