"Above all--we were wet" is a line in the book Angela's Ashes that I am reading. It's about a boy's irish catholic childhood in Limerick, Ireland in the 1940's and in it he writes about the sheets of rain that would come up from the River Shannon and keep the city wet all the time. I recommend it. It reminded me of today in Dublin...it is cold and rainy and windy as hell. Right now I'm sitting at my internship at UCD's campus. I can hear the wind blowing around the building and it makes a hollowing noise that is so loud you can't help but notice it. It is almost comforting. It's pouring out and it has been steadily since I woke up. It's so interesting the kind of mood the rain puts you in. ... read more

Just a quick post for now - pics will be posted later tonight. Arrived alive and well a full hour early this morning. Glasgow was gray and overcast but not rainy at all (actually I haven't seen a drop yet which is just fantastic). The view flying in was absolutely gorgeous. Just SO MUCH GREEN! Everywhere green. Really really amazing to see. During the flight I was seated next to a middle-aged schizophrenic (literally) and his ancient father who sneezed coughed and blew his nose obnoxiously loud into a hanky for half the flight. They were sweet though, true Glasgownians heading back home after a vacation to Canada. They were both absolutely terrified of flying which was kind of cute. The big guy next to me (and I mean big guy - the schizo) he crossed ... read more

So as my title suggests, I found out this morning at the Einwohnermeldeamt that apparently we needed visas for stays longer than 3 months and we didn't know it; hence, as of May 1st, we were illegally living in the country. Bryan and I got our visas and everything is now straightened out. We find it weird that Mike never got this letter in the mail, so we are still confused on that. Last week was kind of a blur- Joe's family got here on Tuesday and I've been hanging out with them for a few days.. they are all great! I was only with them for 2 days as I had school on the other days, but on wednesday we walked around the Jungfernstieg area and went to St. Petri Kirche.. which was rough, as ... read more

Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » Ariege May 27th 2008

I just wanted to show you a few photos that we took more than a fortnight ago - before we had a week in England, before our last visitors came, because we had such fun. Tarascon is about half an hour from us, in the Pyrennees proper, and for 4 days in early May, they had their annual show. Think Harrogate Show, but with the animals held in the Valley Gardens, and winning troupes of sheep being paraded down Cambridge Street to the centre of the precinct, with bands playing and people sitting round outside the food tents eating hearty dishes of local lamb, croustade and wine... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg May 27th 2008

Hey all! Just a quick update to let you all know that I´m alive. :) Lysh and I are in Salzburg right now, on a day trip from Munich... we just arrived, but needed to burn our photos onto discs, so we stopped in to an Internet cafe quick. I haven´t seen the places where the Sound of Music took place yet, but from the train this place looks soooo beautiful! Almost like a painting. Don´t worry, Maddog, I´ll take lots of pictures for ya. ;) Munich is AMAZING! Definitely my favorite so far. Alysia and I plan on living here some day. I don´t even want to talk about it because it´ll ruin how wonderful it is. The people, the food, the BEER, the language, everthing.... top notch. We went on a bar crawl last ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Exeter May 27th 2008

Despite a dreary Cornish morning and warnings of more bad weather to come, the sun poked from behind the clouds for most of the afternoon. One awful hill approaching Exeter aside, this was a lot less troubling. We saw a 15% gradient sign of a fairly steep climb, but we'd done far steeper already. Rolfe got another puncture. Plymouth is a bit of a dump and all its traffic lights were on red. We reacquainted ourselves with the other End-to-Enders the Exeter Youth Hostel. No-one had given up yet. 64 miles. Just over 5 hours in the saddle.... read more

I am about to leave Prague to go to Munich. I have had a great time Prague and have met tons of people. Prague is so different from what I thought it was going to be. The city is pretty dirty. There are some things to see but not many sights. I am leaving for Berlin in an hour. I will write more when I get to Germany!! ... read more

It's pronounced Lemster, would you believe? Would you also believe that Gareth had to get a new wheel? Only his spoke broke opposite a cycle shop. Finally, the wind eased off, the rain stopped and we crossed the Severn Bridge in Wales, which looked...much the same as England. Except the road signs were supplemented with some unintelligible clusters of letters. We enjoyed a 3 mile downhill on beautiful tarmac, to the impressive Tintern Abbey. Lunch in Monmouth was spent watching highlights of the previous days' cricket. We made it to the Leominster YH with enough time to wake our new, hungover roommate (he lay on the bed for 13 hours, making strange noises), check out a couple of local pubs and their local ales. What should have been a restful night's sleep was spoiled by the ... read more

We are now in a motorhome. We have called it Macre Coeur. It has everything you could possibly think of, a toilet, a shower, a place to cook, a fridge and bunk beds and an even higher bed over the drivers cabin. We picked up our Motorhome in Germany. We have travelled through Germany, Austria and we are now in Italy. We met our friends at a farm stay in Bavaria. We went to a great water park and also had a farmers lunch, which had great cakes and a big hay stack for all the kids to jump in. We are now staying with some other friends in Maranello in Italy. The house is a 400 year old horse stable. Our friends have a lovely dog called Spoon, there is also another dog called Pe ... read more
