Arrived in Amsterdam as scheduled in the morning. It was quite a long walk to exit the airport. Got the stamp at the passport control to be admited to the country. Headed to the bus stop for the ride to the city. This time I did not take the train but opt to the bus since it would drop you off at the southern part of the city in Leidseplein near the hostel. Plus it is cheaper to take the bus (cost 5 strips on the stripcaard) rather than 4 euro on the train. After check-in at the hostel I headed out to explore the city. This weekend there was an annual gay parade (a must-see) along the canals. Since i did not know where the parade would pass through I was on the mission to ... read more

hey guys, in amsterdam at the moment... weather totally sucks and we dont have a good impression of the place so for. goodbye tupils and windmills, hello marijuana and prositutes! ush and i are slightly freaked out (ok, more than slightly) by these very scanitly clad hookers enticing bypassers from street windows. havent even stepped into the red light district yet! oh, how we long for dear old paris! so far, we've spent a lot of time indoors (10 bedroom dorm and shops)... trying to muster up motovation to head out to the Anne Frank House and then possibly out to a jazz club tonight... as you can tell from the title of our previous blog, we havent had all that much sucess wiht the night life so far. well, here are some pics from paris ... read more

That night didn't end after seeing those kids. We decided to go to a coffee shop ;). We went to a coffee shop called Bulldog. I bought some and smoked some there. It was one of the worst stuff, I ever have. It made me sick. I couldn't smoke anymore of those shit. I was not happy with that stuff. Next day, I went to this college, basically it is a guided shop and tell you where to go. They told me that Bulldog is like a Macdonald. You went there and ordered a streak. So they told me a few places to go and I picked one outside of the main tourist area. I walked into this place. It is all Jamaican guys there. Well I am okay with that. So I sat down and ... read more

I left this one off for a long time. It is time to finish the travelling journal. I didn't want to write this chapter. One of the reason is that I felt like I lost a part of me. I miss travelling already. I have nothing to worry about (well, other than my belongings) and I love meeting people. I should just go and meet people like I was travelling in Vancouver. After a peaceful weekend in Munich, I left monday morning and took the 8 hours train to amsterdam. It was a long ride, my last train was one of the best. I was sitting in a first class leather cabinet. It looks pretty new and the ride was very steady. I was in the front car, apparently we reached 200km/h for a few times. ... read more

Okay, before you read this one, make sure you started at Paris, (2 blogs down) cos I've done all 3 countries on seperate blogs for you, but I did them all today, so only this one will show up as most recent...anyway, I'm sure you figured that one out. So.......Amsterdam...... well, its renowned world-wide for its.... shall we say, tolerance, or more simply put....the fact that marijuana and prostitution are legal here.....what can I say, Amsterdam, you sure know how to raise the old eyebrows! Some refer to it as the 'venice of the north' but I've gotta say, no offence to any dutch out there (especially my good friend Aris) but it aint got a patch on Venice. Its without a doubt the dirtiest place I've ever seen, and I'm not just talking about the ... read more

I guess you could call this the last entry of my african experience, except that I am sitting in an amsterdam internet cafe and so that would be slightly untrue. I got my ticket bumped up a bit and so I'll be home this afternoon. Hard to believe it has come to an end already... it was really hard to leave my village and all of the friends that I have made there. Lindsey... read more

I'd be speaking absolute sh*t if I said we chose Amsterdam as the destination to kick start our holiday for the purpose of visiting the Anne Frank Museum. It was a much more celebrated part of their culture that tempted us... the bicycles. Hiring a bicycle meant we could weave in between the beautiful city canals without fuss (well, as soon as we mastered the reverse pedal brake system.) My two travel buddies - Azz and Azz carved it up on the two wheeled machines ensuring I kept up with them, and saw as much of the city as humanly possible. A morning coffee (shop visit) seemed to be what Amsterdamites enjoyed first thing - so not wanting to offend, we were happy to adhere to their rather profound culture. After a rather random bout of ... read more

So I've been to four countries since the last blog, I figured I would break up the blogs. I flew into Amsterdam from Bangkok to begin a three week vacation from my already seven month long vacation. Arrived at the crack of dawn but was wide awake (thank-god for sleeping pills on 11+ hour flights) and ready for my third visit to one of my favorite cities...AMSTERDAM! Waited for my sister Pamela at the airport, gave her a big hug, caught the train to Centraal Station and then the fun began. We've both been to the Dam before so we just strolled around catching up, hit the coffeeshops, Van Gogh museum and skipped the rest of the tourist sights because we've both already done them. Spent most of the time sitting around chatting and bullshitting. Plus ... read more

Well seems like yonks ago now but after waffles in Brugge it was on to Amsterdam. And boy was it HOT! Stayed in the dodgiest hostel in Amsterdam, which actually wouldnt have been too bad if it wasnt 37 degrees during the day. The problem was there were railings on the windows and hence they only opened about 2 cms. And hence the room was like a sauna. I was bathed in sweat and seriously considered getting my pillow and sheets and sleeping in the park. It was rank. Apart from that though Amsterdam was a truly interesting city. It is filled with canals and crooked buildings that look like the only thing preventing them from falling over is the fact that there are two building right next to them holding them up! Dodgy water filled ... read more

Amsterdam Bike Ride! (25th-30th July, 2006) Bike Events UK (a bit like Bicycle Victoria) organised a week long bike ride through The Netherlands and Holland. Bern, Elizabeth and I were rather pleased to read that the highest point in The Netherlands was only 312 metres and this was not on our route. It was not going to be a very hilly bike ride and this was a good thing when there hadn't been much training! Harwich to Hoek Van Holland to Noordwijk (Stayokay Hostel) It was a very early start. Bern and I rode our bikes in to London Liverpool Street from East Finchley where we met Elizabeth and caught the train to Harwich International. From Harwich it was close to a 4 hour ferry trip across to Hoek Van Holland (Hook of Holland). We were ... read more
