Kathryn's Visit To The UK & Europe 12th June-8th July, 2010 London My sister Kathryn came to visit Rupesh and I in London and to do a bit of travelling around the UK and Europe. I pulled out all the stops for her visit! Kathryn flew in to Heathrow at 6am which was just enough time for us to get back to our place in North London, freshen up and then get the tube in to central London. We were going to meet the Queen! Trooping the Colour (which I had never heard of until my sister was plannning her trip) was happening today. Not only did we meet Queen Elizageth II but several other members of the Royal family including Prince Charles, Camilla & Prince William. When I say 'meet' - perhaps this is the ... read more

The South Downs Way 28th-31st May, 2010 The South Downs Way is a long distance trail (160km) in southern England running between Winchester and Eastbourne. It is accessible to walkers, horse riders and cyclists. Much of the trail crosses the chalk hills that the Downs is well known for. London to Winchester Friday evening, bank holiday weekend and Rupesh and I took the train from Waterloo to Winchester which wasn't much more than an hour. After finding Panoramic Views B & B we walked in to town and had a really lovely dinner a The Old Vine. Winchester is a beautiful old town and well worth exploring a little more. Winchester to Buriton Stats: 46km, Av. speed 8.8km/h, 5.25 hours of cycling In true English style the rain started just after breakfast as we were getting ... read more

Snowdonia & Tiggy Winkles 24th/25th April & 1st-3rd May, 2010 Rupesh loves organising surprises especially when they are a work of art on his part! He made the most amazing birthday cake I had ever seen - a hedgehog cake! And it was chocolate! That weekend we also paid a visit to Tiggy Winkles Wildlife Hospital near Oxford. We saw a couple of resident hedgehogs who had injuries or illnesses that meant they would not survive back in the wild. We also saw a baby fox and lots of bird life. Tiggy Winkles even has a museum dedicated to hedgehog paraphernalia. The following weekend was a bank holiday long weekend. We drove up to Snowdonia National Park on Saturday afternoon. The weather was terrible and the thought of camping was no longer very appealing. We managed ... read more

Cromer 12th-14th February, 2010 It was an incredibly cold winter in London even though I missed a good part of it by being in Australia. A weekend away in the Norfolk Broads wasn't any warmer than London but we stayed in a warm self-catering cottage in Cromer called The Grove. Cromer is a coastal town in Norfolk close to the Norfolk Broads. The Norfolk Broads are an area of rivers and lakes in Norfolk and Suffolk - a popular area for canal boating and other water activities. We spent some of Saturday driving around some of the nearby villages on the broads. A maze of waterways. It started to snow and it was very pretty. It was nice to get back to our warm cottage, cook dinner and enjoy a bottle of champagne that we'd been ... read more

Dubai 18th-21st January, 2010 After spending Christmas in Melbourne, Rupesh and I celebrated our engagement with a BBQ on the Yarra River before flying back to London. We flew in to Abu Dhabi and then spent a couple of days in Dubai amazed by the huge number, and size of shopping centres and hotels. We started out exploring the 'Old Town' visiting the Gold Souq (market) and Spice Souq and catching a boat across the Dubai Creek. Lots of great smells around the Spice Souq. We also found some tasty and cheap Indian food in the old part of town. I had been warned about the heat in Dubai - during some periods of the year it can be quite unpleasant to wander outdoors. This may be part of the reason for so many huge, temperature ... read more

Kosciuszko National Park Trip 5th - 9th January, 2010 Melbourne to Cathedral Range State Park This was going to be a great little road trip to see some parts of Australia that neither Rupesh or I had visited before. We drove along the Black Spur to Marysville. The amount of regrowth since the bushfires of Black Saturday almost 12 months earlier was incredible. It is still a very pretty area despite the devastation. But it wasn't the town I recognised visiting a few years earlier when going on a day trip up to Lake Mountain. Lots of temporary housing and beginnings of re-building. A new supermarket just recently opened. We drove in to the Cathedral Range State Park where bushfire damage signs warned of falling tree limbs. We stayed well clear of the trees and camped ... read more

Murray Marathon 27th December-31st December, 2009 I have paddled in the Murray Marathon for years now but only as a relay team member. This year it was going to the be full distance in a K3. The K3 was purchased out of the trading post for about $150 several years ago. Bern, Elizabeth and I had every intention of taking on the Murray some time. In fact, it was after paddling the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic (111km overnight paddle) in about 2001 that we planned to paddle the whole Murray. Only it was after this race that paddling the whole Murray didn't seem like such a good idea for me! I can remember not being able to lift my arms, open car doors and struggled to pick up a jug of water. I do have some recollection ... read more

Great Vic Bike Ride - 28th November - 6th December, 2009 I was very fortunate to be able to leave my job at the Wheelchair Service in London over December and some of January to come back to Australia. Rupesh would come over just before Christmas. I had a few things planned and among those things was doing the Great Victorian Bike Ride with Mandy, Jessica, Bern, Elizabeth and Bern & Elizabeth's brother Tim. This year the ride started in Portland and followed a big section of the Great Ocean Road before finishing in Geelong. Mum and Kathryn caught up with us in Apollo Bay and it was here that we had a rest day after tackling Lavers Hill. We really had all sorts of weather which I guess is to be expected particularly along the ... read more

Hartington - Peak District 20th - 22nd November, 2009 The English countryside is beautiful even when it is raining! It's always nice to get out of London and even when it is starting to get cold and wintry, the hostels are always warm and toasty. We found a great hostel in the Peak District in the village of Hartington called Hartington Hall. Hartington Hall is a manor house and was certainly very grand. It was very cosy with log fires in its own bar and dining area. We also made use of the self-catering kitchen which was in a separate building (once a barn) next to the lambs, goats and chooks. The rain did come down but we still ventured out of the hostel for a wander through the nearby hills. Lots of farmland surrounding the ... read more

Oktoberfest, Munich 24th-27th September, 2009 Prost! German for 'Cheers!' On Thursday evening Rupesh, Charis and I flew from London to Munich to spend some time at the biggest beer festival in the world - Oktoberfest. So it wasn't quite October but the festival starts at the end of September and runs for 16 days. We took a train out to Weis n' Camp - a camping area set up especially for Oktoberfest. The best part is that the tents are already set up for you! Rows and rows of tents. The camp even had its own beer hall/tent which was incredibly lively and noisy. We had our first stein in preparation for hitting the real festival tomorrow. Friday morning and breakfast consisted of a schnitzel at the camp before catching the train in to Oktoberfest. One ... read more
