Travel Blog Posts
Thought I should let everybody know, I've spent the last two days working on a scrapbook so it's now done and I've posted 24 of my favourite pics in the gallery section of this website... so go back to the opening screen of my blog and click on gallery and then click on the picture that is there, and it will open them all up. Hope you like them and send me a comment if you would like to get together to see the rest. Lindsey ps. and for the record, I'm still not in Canada... mentally that is. I was shocked the other day when I was looking at some clothes in a store and the saleslady didn't harrass me to buy them, and when I turned on the tap and water started flowing, and ... read more
I guess you could call this the last entry of my african experience, except that I am sitting in an amsterdam internet cafe and so that would be slightly untrue. I got my ticket bumped up a bit and so I'll be home this afternoon. Hard to believe it has come to an end already... it was really hard to leave my village and all of the friends that I have made there. Lindsey... read more
Well then... an awful lot has happened since my last real post, so bear with me as my scatterbrained brain tries to cover it all. Firstly... I tried Batik. A friend I have made that does all the batik (making of cloth with wax and die) for most of the schools around offinso offered to teach cassie and I how to do it, so Cassie and I spent the entire day with him, doing the whole thing ourselves and he even took us to the dissability home where he teaches them twice a week so that they can make money from their work. I got made fun of by one of the apprentises as I proceeded to draw spaceships on my cloth (the only thing I know how to draw with any sort of ability) because ... read more
Once again I composed an entry and had it dissappear... suffice it to say not much has happened except that I learned to make batik and spent a day doing construction on the new school... and now for some pictures. ... read more
So I think it has been a while since I have posted... but my mom was here this week and we had a great time together. Having a canadian get right off of the plane also showed me how ghanaian I've become... all of the little things that my mom looked quizically at that I consider perfectly normal... it will be strange when I get home, that is certain. So my mom arrived on friday and they lost her luggage, so it arrived seperately on monday, but that wasn't bad because monday was a ghanaian national holiday, so we took the opportunity to see Kumasi a bit more and do some shopping. Tuesday and Wednesday we spent at the school and I got some great pics of my mom reading them stories. On thursday, we fulfilled ... read more
...And then I got Malaria... but I still managed to ride a crocodile, go on a safari, and have a baboon come up to the table where I was eating, grap the black bag out of my purst that contained all of my cash, and chase him until he dropped it... So yeah, we left for Bolgatanga on friday and our bus left late, broke down and needed another car to drive 2 hours up to where we were to bring us a spare part, then a tire blew just south of tamale and had to be fixed, and we finally arrived 12 hours later (should have been 6). Our hotel of choice was also full so we went to another place and I went to bed... wierdest thing about malaria is that I woke up ... read more
I am now a few days away from being half-way done my trip in ghana, so Cassie and I are headed up north for a week... we are going almost as far as burkina faso and the highlights should include feeding chickens to crocodiles, and spending a few days in a pool looking out over an elephant watering hole in Mole National Park. The exciting pieces of news since my last entry are that we received some money from Canada this week so we bought all of the stone and cement and water, and the big pour began yesterday. They have to pour a 2 inch base over the entire foundation and then they will put the steel rod supports on top of that and begin forming the pillars in the next few days... really exciting! ... read more
To sum up my birthday... (quickly cause I have like 5 minutes) we all went to mama's boutique... a shack that serves lukewarm beverages to you while you sit in lawnchairs... and I invited the teachers and the guys that work at the site and told them I would buy them each a beer if they came... so there were about 20 of us... and we drank, and then the ghanaians tried to teach us to dance... and we took gin shots out of ketchup packs (that's how you buy gin here) and we attracted a crowd of about 30 ghanaians that were on their way to fetch water from the creek but instead came in to see why in the world 6 white folk and a whole bunch of ghanaians wearing soccer jerseys from mississauga ... read more
So I arrived back to work on tuesday morning and went over to the corner where the notebooks are kept in cardboard boxes and nearly had a heart attack! Two furry white balls closely resembled rats were in one of the boxes. My interaction with the students went something like this: "Ah!! What's in there?" "Madame, it is cats" "why are there cats in our classroom?" "because they live there" "since when?" "since they were born on the weekend" "oh, how will they live here? what will they eat?" "they'll suck on their mommie's milk!" "oh, well I guess that should have been obvious" So there are two kittens living there while I and my 20+ students try to learn. And by the way... all women in ghana wear fertility beads so my host-mom said I ... read more
I went to Cape coast this weekend and I would show you pictures but my batteries are dead.... it has possibly the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen anywhere, the sad part of course being that many of them are filled with waste and you'll even see pigs rummaging among them. I also saw a goat pregnant with triplets... it's cross section could be compared to a 3 foot long football! And the mosquitoes here... see first I thought it was great that they didn't buzz and all, but now I realize that I think I'm allergic to them and each bite swells up to be about 8cm long and 5cm high... ridiculous! I may live on reactine after all just to get rid of the swelling! Was cape coast was incredible and humbling... I ... read more
