Alright i'm going to make this quick because we are leaving to see the Anne Frank house soon. Okay where I left off was we were entering Austria again. We were in a the Austrian Tyrol which was lower key then Vienna. We took a mountain bike ride through the austrian alps and had lunch at the top of the mountain. I was suppose to do paragliding that day too but it started to rain and unfortunatley it was cancelled. That night we had a theme party at the hotel. We all had to cross dress! It was hilarious all the guys in skirts and tank tops realized how lucky they are to be able to go to a bar in baggy jeans and a tshirt haha. The next day we left for Switzerland which is ... read more

At long last I have made it to Europe and Amsterdam stands out as a highlight of the trip so far. Some say it rains all the same, while others claim everyone is stoned. But I gained a glimpse of a city full of character and charm. Three days was barely enough to take in the numerous 'must sees' but we did our best to fit in as much as possible. I met up with Kathy there who I know from uni days in NZ. We rented bikes and spent a day riding out into the Dutch countryside which was beautiful, made it from the city up north to Broek in Waterland and then further to Monnickendam to explore the alleyways and cool little shops. Being pressed for time and money we chose the Rijksmuseum so ... read more

We dropped our cars off at Amsterdam Airport and were amazed to hear we had travelled over 21,000kms over the past 15 weeks! Now it was goodbye Holland, Goodbye Europe, Hello London (for 6hrs), Hello Hong Kong (for 6hrs) and hello home! The flight home was very long and exhausting, topped off only by finding out on our arrival back in Perth that none of our luggage (all 21 pieces!) had travelled with us - that would arrive intermittently over the next few days.... Overall though, Ric's Excellend European Adventure" was a huge success in every possible way and will provide lots of wonderful memories for many years to come. Now, where to next??!!... read more

Hi all, Just a short note today. I have made it to the end of the Contiki tour. We have a final dinner tonight and cruise along the canals and then a drive back to London tomorrow. Had a busy day yesterday getting to Amsterdam. We stopped in Edam and rode some Granny bikes around, saw cheese and clogs demonstration and also went to a diamond cutting factory. Amsterdam is a crazy place, the night life is busy and seriously eye opening. Went out on the town last night, quite easy to find ways around. Enjoyed some of the local culture with the group. Today went on paddle (bike) boats along the canals and then to Anne Frank's house. Have definately learned alot more about the world wars since being over here and looking around. Have ... read more

We had our own personal tourguides of Amsterdam as Irene's roomate Pascal was born there. As well, her boyfriend takes the clients from international confrences that he works at on a tour of Amsterdam. So we saw a few hidden secrets. There was a facade of a tiny church along one of the main padestrian shopping streets squished between 2 clothing stores. But the church was much larger than we expected. Then in the center of the city we went through this passage way. It led to square where all the nuns lived, sort of like the one we just saw in Brugge. Again, it was so strange to have peace and quiet right in the middle of this busy city. This courtyard is only open to the public 4hrs out of the day. We then ... read more

Hey everyone, yet another interesting blog update from your biggest fans! Well, after all the R&R in Belgium, we needed to undertake some serious (mis)adventures so it was off to Amsterdam, the land of cheese and dykes (the water ones). We arrived Friday after travelling on the Benelux train service - one ticket can get you on as many journeys as you like between Belgium, Netherlands & Luxembourg - highly organised! On the way we stopped in Antwerp, Belgium's large port city and the home of the diamond. It was nice but we could only window shop - I'm sure we will be back to make a purchase at some stage ;) Arriving in Amsterdam we struck a huge throng of people heading off in all directions at central station, i guess its busy on Friday ... read more

Het lijkt ... read more

Yeah, these are just a few of my favorite things. I hope all are well. August is now too almost gone. You know my opinions about how time goes by. Living here in Amsterdam has been a great experience. What an introspective time it has been for me. Much time for reverie and exploring this city on bike, usually till i'm lost and then found... once again. The time to reflect back on where i have been and the things i have done and the people i have met this year has been some of the most enriching moments in my life. I still feel soo fortunate...! I love to people watch and seeing the world roll by as i sit in a park or on a street corner or in the middle of a square ... read more

Amsterdam is a truly great place. We spent two full days enjoying all the experiences this vibrant and diverse city offered. For us, the Heineken Factory was awesome! We got a special guided tour and spent three and a half hours taking in the whole experience and dowing a few lagers! The Van Gogh Museum was very interesting, housing more than 200 hundred pieces of his work. Amazingly, I found his cut off ear in the disabled loo! The Red Light District, with its various sex shows, coffee shops and prostitutes in windows was of NO INTEREST to me whatsoever, as you can well imagine! NOt my kind of scene, although after the fourth circuit of the Red Light District, I had to be reminded of this fact and was promptly taken back to the car, ... read more

OK, so these are pictures of the trip Eric and I took to Amsterdam. Things that many people might not know about Amsterdam. One, it is full of tourists, as you may have guessed. Two, everyone is on Bicycle. I mean everyone, some seven hundred thousand bikes are in the city. Eighty thousand of which are stolen every year. Twenty thousand of which are thrown into the canals. I understand that they regularly scoop the bicycles out of the water, but it takes up a lot of time and space.... read more
