This particular video will play sideways as that is how it was shot and I don't have access to any video editing programs here. Our students were quite busy Wednesday evening. A solid group went for a tour of Hamburg SV stadium (the local pro soccer club), and others were packed with other plans. Poor Jeff though was without anything to do. I had received an offer to go indoor rock climbing with my host families son, and of course I took him up on the offer! Since poor Jeff had nothing to do, he jumped at the chance to tag along. ... read more

Berliinissä on suurkaupunkitunnelmaa. Teknis-taloudellinen koneisto sekoittuu spontaaniin ruohonjuuritason pörinään. My thoughts on waking up: "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, we're going to Salzburg today!!!!!!!". We couldn't get to Austria without changing trains in Munich though, so naturally, we couldn't resist the opportunity to spend a couple of hours exploring the city before moving onto Salzburg. Our train was at 6:54am, which was insanely early, but we'd had a long sleep and the station was only a couple of minutes from the hotel, so we weren't too done in, and were really looking forward to the day :o) The train journey to Munich took around three hours, most of which was spent with me getting extremely agitated with Phantom Hourglass (I love Zelda, but it really does drive me mental at times!), and we arrived to a very hot and sunny Munich ... read more

6/7 Travel day to Berlin Arrived in Berlin at 5.30pm. Ellisa (an Aussie girl I met on the bus this morning) and I went for a walk around the city, we saw the Tv Tower, The Dom catherdral, the Book Burning Square and more in such a short walk from our hostel. I really like it here in Berlin already. I feel so comfortable and relaxed here, it is such a beautiful city. Or maybe I am just getting used to this travelling thing. After a German Schnitzel for dinner at the hostel, I had a few drinks with some other Aussies doing Busabout and 2 Canadian girls. I also bumped into Abbey and Monique who I meet in Amsterdam it was their last night in Berlin. 7/7 For my first full day in Berlin I ... read more

Upon arrival at Goettingen train station we were greeted by our hosts and whisked through the countryside to a little village called Sieboldshausen. As the house was elevated slighty it had a fantastic view to the east and west overlooking other villages and forests. After quite an extensive lunch we headed to a little medieval village called Hannover Munden to look at some amazing old buildings which are over 850 years old. On our second day we were taken into Goettingen to see an exhibition of items Captain Cook acquired during his journeys around South America, Asia, Australasia and Africa. This was followed by another big lunch (I see a trend here), before our hosts took us out to see a ruined castle nearby. Right as we arrived at the castle there was a massive storm ... read more

After yet another stress-free train trip we arrived in Frankfurt, which has probably the most impressive looking central station building I have seen so far. Even better than the station building was the fact that our hostel was directly over the road making it the shortest walk to accommodation so far, and when you are carrying over 20kg's worth of stuff that is an incredible relief. Once at the hostel we discovered they had conveniently lost our reservation but were able to accommodate us in the same type of room for less than we initally thought. Then it was off to find a laundromat to do the weeks worth of washing which to be honest is just becoming a pain in the butt. The following day Tamsin and I went into the centre of town which ... read more

Here in Hamburg, they have a special name for their special weather. Schmuttelvetter. Even if you know no German, it works as an onomatopoeia to tell you what it´s like; grey, cool, air full of drifting drizzle that slowly soaks you without you knowing it. We arrived here night before last, after a late night short haul from Berlin, where we were supposed to stay. Since the only train we could catch was an Inter City Express (ICE TRAIN!), it was going to be really expensive, so we decided to use a day of travel on our rail pass. So we got in around twelve thirty (they say zero thirty here) and caught a cab to our hostel, then crashed dead. Here´s the thing with overnight trains. If you arrive after midnight, you mark down the ... read more

Happy Birthday Dave, lets go to a... Nazi death camp. After an awesome time in Riga, we took a horrible bus journey through to Warsaw. Full of Poles and Latvians, we managed to make a quick stop in Lithuania (Dave's old stomping ground) and end up in Warsaw, for about 10 minutes. Due to some very bad reviews from friends in Riga, and what we saw when we first headed in on the bus, the concrete was too much so we caught a quick train to Krakow. Definitely the nicest city we've seen in Poland (out of two), we spent our first night eating as many pierogis as possible, tastiest pierogis ever, and went to the old castle district which was very impressive. The pints that cost the equivalent of 50 cents made it a bit ... read more

Just a couple of hours from Darmstadt and the madness of Heinerfest is one of the many parts of Bavaria that time forgot. Not to be misunderstood; this is a stunning part of the world. Germany is often forgotten as a tourist destination, but it has a lot to offer and is very good value for money, even with today's unpleasant GBP/EUR exchange rate. About an hour south of Würzburg, close to Ansbach is Colmberg and the home of Burg Colmberg, a stunning castle on a hill in truly rural Bavaria. Just 20km to the west is Rothenburg ob der Taube, a very well-known and well-frequented mediaeval market town. The castle is amazing - combining that castle-like feeling with a friendly welcome and, yes, even child-friendliness. We were the lazy residents. We were told on arrival ... read more
