October 17th 2009

An early-ish start (though not compared to the day before!), as we were out of the hotel at 9am to catch the Skytrain to Saphin Taksim station, right on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. From there, we planned on taking the Chao Phraya Express boat to the Grand Palace...but fair to say, that was definitely easier said than done! On our arrival at the boat station, we found crowds and crowds of people (mainly tourists), all of whom seemed very confused about where to stand, how to queue etc. So we sought out a man who seemed to work on the boats and asked him what we needed to do, only to be told that the boat we wanted didn’t exist and we definitely wouldn’t get any boat that day to Rajinee, which was ... read more

The day started with a quite lovely 5:30am wake up, and a taxi to the airport for our 8:55am flight to Bangkok. There’s a lot to do in Hong Kong airport, so we busied ourselves looking around the shops. I was very, very distressed to have to leave behind a bracelet in Tiffany because we were just 200 HK$ short, though soon perked up when John promised he’d get me something from Tiffany in Tokyo at the end of the trip. Oh, and some pancakes from Burger King also helped (I’m a simple girl, really!) ;) The flight (which was with Cathay Pacific) was only a couple of hours long with no dramas, though I did have an extremely irritating man next to me in the window seat, who kept pushing the call button every five ... read more

October 15th 2009

Our last day in Hong Kong began with a lie in (two lazy mornings in three days...I guess jetlag and exhaustion from the wedding was still very much set in!) and a panicked “Argh, we slept in and there’s still so much to do!”, before rushing out of the hotel with no breakfast and heading to the MTR (have I mentioned yet how good the metro system in Hong Kong is? So clean and efficient!). We took the metro to Tung Chung and on arrival there headed to the cable car which would take us to Ngong Ping. We had seen the cable cars the day before on the metro to Disneyland, yet amazingly I hadn’t been put off, and was still very happy to use them as our transport to see the Big Buddha. And ... read more

Disney Day!! We started off with breakfast in the hotel (a pretty standard buffet), during which it absolutely chucked it down outside...the first rain of the holiday. It turned out to be a very quick downpour though, and by the time we left the hotel to walk to the MTR, everything was dry as if nothing had happened. Got to love the humidity and heat at times like this ;) To get to Disney, we took the Tung Chung line to Sunny Bay and then transferred to the short Disneyland Resort line. The Disneyland line has possibly the greatest trains of ALL time, with Mickey shaped windows and handles, and even Mickey statues throughout the carriages. Commuting would be a so much less painful experience if other train companies made this sort of effort with their ... read more

Our first full day in the city, and I doubt it’ll come as a shock to find that we started it off with a bit of a lie-in. We did have a LOT of sleep to catch up on! We ended up getting up at 10am, which was a bit later than we wanted, so we quickly got ready and rushed out without any breakfast. We took the MTR to Admirality, and then walked up what I remember to be a bit of a steep hill to the Peak Tram Station. We didn’t have to wait long to get onto the tram, and my main memory is just that I have no idea how it works...it’s insanely steep! At one point, we could only have been a few degrees off completely vertical, which is just mental ... read more

October 12th 2009

After a very long flight from Heathrow (13 hours in total), during which I managed a lovely two hours of sleep (John did a little better with five!), we finally arrived in Hong Kong at 1pm local time (which was something stupid like 4am UK time!). For once though, I didn’t care! :) I was married and in Hong Kong!!! Nothing was going to stop me smiling right then! On arrival at the airport, we had to go through various security health checks, which worried us slightly because of John’s chest infection, but we managed to get through with no problems, before picking up our cases. When we stepped out of the airport to the taxi ranks, the heat hit us immediately. After leaving autumnal weather in Newcastle, it was a slight culture shock to suddenly ... read more

A Day for Reflection

Finally, we reach the most important day of the holiday, and the reason for the whole trek around Europe ever happening: Auschwitz. As a history graduate, Auschwitz has always been an important place to me and one that I've always felt a strong inclination to visit. I didn't ever believe it would actually happen, until one day my brain woke up and just said "Why not?". Cue a two week trip across Europe, with one final destination in mind: Krakow, and within that, Auschwitz. Waking up on this morning though was not the same as waking up the morning we went to Salzburg (another big dream come true). This day felt heavy from the very start. We were up at 7:30am for breakfast, which in fitting with everything else at the Hotel Kazimierz, was very nice. ... read more

Another very 'trainy' day, as we moved onto our last city of the holiday, Krakow. We had to be up painfully early at 5am to check out at half five and get to the station in time for our 6:30am train to Warsaw. Walking to the S-Bahn, we passed a fair few drunken stragglers returning from an obviously good night out (Newcastle might have its own reputation for being a party city, but it's rare you'll find that on a Thursday night/Friday morning so I think Berlin beats us!) but other than that, the streets were deserted. As I said in a previous blog, one very good thing about Berlin (and Germany in general) is that the trains are very regular and almost always dead on time, so even at that time in the morning we ... read more

A Disappointing Day

July 17th 2008

On waking up at 9am, the first thing I did was look out of the window: was it still raining? No! It actually looked quite sunny with a touch of blue sky coming through, so I pulled some summery clothes out of my backpack and at about 9:45am, we were ready to see the sights of Berlin. Our first point of interest was the Tiergarten, so we walked around the Berlin Zoo and around the outskirts of the park, before moving up towards the Victory Column. The area we were walking through to get there was a very business-y district with lots of offices and car dealerships and not a whole lot of interest. It also didn't take me long to figure out that it wasn't quite as lovely day as I had hoped. Dark clouds ... read more

July 16th 2008

Not actually a whole lot to report today actually, unless anyone is interested in the details of a very long and unexciting train ride between Prague and Berlin! We had breakfast early on and left the hotel at half past nine to get the subway to Holesovice...which I have to say is the worst major train station I have ever been to. I know it isn't Prague's main train station, but for a city that is used by interrailers as much as this is, they really need to think about sorting it out. It's basically an underground cave, and about as organised as Newcastle United during the transfer window. Platform announcements aren't made until roughly thirty seconds before the train is due, and with nowhere to sit, there is nothing to do but crowd together under ... read more
