So we visitied the Berlin Wall and Check Point Charlie. We hadn't realized that the wall went up August of 1961. Before there had been travel restrictions but the wall went up then. Check Point Charlie was the place where east met west. There isn't much of the wall left. We did go to one area where they have preserved the Wall and show how the East German govenrment created a "death strip" between the wall and East Berlin, not allowing anyone to leave East Berlin. Very interesting! In addition to seeing the historical sites, we did some people watching while we ate and drank some beer. On our way to Checkpoint Charlie's, which is quite a few train rides away from the hotel (Berlin is an absolutely huge city), we stopped and had lunch at ... read more

I honestly cannot believe we made it to Germany and back in Matt's '78 MG. Don't get me wrong, it's a great running car but when you think of taking a road trip, it's rarely in a classic car such as this, unless it's a VW bus (of which we saw many). But we made it. I give props to Matt as well because he drove the entire way with only a short nap on the trip across the channel via ferry. Our destination was Spangdahlem where Matt used to be stationed and we met up with some of his old German friends. I must say the scenery in Germany blows away this portion of England. So many more trees and hills. The beer is better too, and that means alot coming from this non-beer drinking ... read more

Before you ask, no, I didn't actually go to Alexanderplatz. But I did see a bunch of cool stuff - the trains, the train stations, the bars...and some historical stuff, Hitler and Stalin wandering around (they seemed pretty friendly, considering...). I also went to a pool party and nearly lost my bikini to a hungry pony. Yes, a pony. Yes, my bikini. No, I wasn't drunk. I had to spend about an hour riding a bike to and from this porno-pony-pool-party. I met a cute Scotsman named...er...something that sounds like "cuckold", but with a cough in the middle. I ate a Berliner. Make of that what you will. My hosts were awesome. I ate brilliant food - some sort of deep fried cheese and potato pocket. I almost saw Bush Sr., but thanks to his American ... read more

MARTA LOVES MUNICH doo dah doo dah It;s one of those places that really suprises you. I didn't hear that much about it beforehand and was a tad apprehensive about going there because of Dachau and it's potential resonance with the people but I'm so glad we did we had a ball!!! Hofbrauhaus was one of the most fun places I've been to, despite weird poms shelling out free hugs and a Hulk Hogan look-a-like from Gundegai, Ally drank litre radlers and I litre beers so we've the beer thing down pat. I had scruples in visiting Dachau. On one had, it has to be done in order to fully comprehend the history but at the same time, I didn't want it to become another tourist spectactle for us. I can't say I found that day ... read more

Berlin we found was a funky and alternative city dominated by the emotional graffitti on whats left of "The Wall". We stayed on a houseboat on the River Spree which was really cool. It was really hot one day and cold and rainy the next. We saw little of the Brandenburg Gate as exclusive 4th July - American Independence Day celebrations were to commence. ... read more

Day 1: Frankfurt for a day Ant and I arrived in Germany at about 10am. With a 6 hour layover we decided to roam Frankfurt. After walking the streets for a bit we found a spot to eat, took a cab back to the airport, and caught our flight to Bilbao ... read more

I arrived in Germany at 12noon on the 4th & apparently 4th of July is not that important around here. Where's my fireworks, parades & sparklers? I checked my (still) extremely heavy carry-on & went off to take a tour of Frankfurt. I took the train into Frankfurt & ate a weiner. More accurately I ate a curryschnitzel thing. They took a foot long weiner and put it into this weiner slicing machine (men might find painful to watch) and then it came out the bottom all sliced up! Then they put this brown ketchup & curry powder on it. I still thought it was a little boring, so I was adventurous and thought I'd add some condiments. Apparently mustuerd is mustard & milsch is milk (which doesn't taste too good on curry weiners--just in case ... read more

1 July: I'M TAKING A FEW DAYS' break from the performing arts, heading south to the city of Naumburg, 40 minutes by railway, to go canoeing. A little girl in the train compartment is looking in the direction of the disappearing station platform, crying unconsolably as grandma is taking her away -- for the summer or just a few weeks? I walk over and show them a small Canadian pin and how to attach it to my shirt collar, then hand it to the girl. I picked up 25 of these keepsakes from my local Member of Parliament's constituency office in Victoria, to hand them out as tokens of appreciation on my travels. The girl, about three years old, still has a few more sobbing fits, but by the time I leave the train I see ... read more
