Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Nassau January 11th 2000

I'm feeling very tired right now, and my body is reminding me that to much party is not good for me , but come on this is a lifetime travel, I'm beginning to hate this alarm to wake up the passengers of the ship to let us know we have arrived to our next destination, ummm......just five more minutes. And we arrived to Nassau, one of the luxury paradise on earth with a british taste, as a comonwealth member and British ex-Colony they guard a lot of British pecularities, like left circulation, English Colonial arquictecture, very nice Pubs (with some caribbean style), tea-time and very peculiar cultural caracteritics that make the trave worth. Nassau's dowtown was very nice, still feel some of the air of the British Empire, then to continue in our Nassau/Paradise Island express ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico January 10th 2000

The cruise was getting to repeatitive, wild parties with the brazilian group, too much drinking, running out of Corona beer and waiting for our next stop Puerto Rico. The first impression was a very well constructed dock but with the feeling of authentic Latin flavor, kind people trying to make their day, suddenly after getting out the ship my friends an me were surrouded by Locals offering every kind of service (that made me feel like in my country) and we pick a taxi driver who offered to take us to a tour to San Juan for a very fair fare. What an amazing sight, Puerto Rico is a beautifull and amazing place to spend your vacation, the only thing I regreted was not having more time to spend. The first place where we go was ... read more

Continuing in the cuise adventure, and after having almost sleep 2 hours on the last to days was time to go Into U.S Virgin Islands, on a very short stay of a few hours (like every stop we made during the cruise), it was like the whole island was a duty free zone loads of stores, selling fine jewerly, columbian emeralds, suiss watches, going beyond the port where all this tourist shopping "wacos" was in an extasy mode, was the city of Charlotte Amalie, a very nice little town with a combination of danish, french and dutch arquitecture. It's always strange to see how this tiny territories depends entirely of tourism, and no other (at least visible) industrial activities is seen during your stay. One of the sightseeing spots that is a must in this beautifull island ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Haiti January 8th 2000

After almost getting to dizzy of being in the cruise ship our first stop Labadee in Haiti a complete first calss tourist facility in one of the most poor country around the globe it was quite a difference, but this contrast can only be noticed if you have certain backgorund around Haiti, and some general facts in their historical development surrounded of corruption, dictators, several invasion and a subhuman way of life in general (my intention in this blog in not making any political or historical judgements my only intention is to picture a frame solely based in my personal references) so coming back it was like landing in a hollywood set, to perfect to be natural, a unbelievable bay, incredible beach, every rock in the correct place just wonderfull (but it's fair to say that ... read more

Central America Caribbean November 30th 1999

Well its a early rise and shine this morning, 5am to be precise by 6am we were all packed up and raring to go. We arrived at Stonetwaite near Keswick around 9am. Mase put up the tent while Leanne supervised ;-). During this time Thomas took in the scenary including local sheep and lambs. After we had setup the tent Mase decided to cook the first feast of the day-hotdogs. We enjoyed our meal and decided to discover what Stonethwaite countryside had to offer, we decided Tomas was old enougth to walk rahter than be strapped into his buggy. So we head off into the wilderness, after a rocky path we reached a small waterfall, on our journey we met up with lots of walkers and many dogs, Thomas said hello to everything that moved. We ... read more

We arrived at Playa Samara, on the pacific side of Costa Rica. Playa Samara has a reputation of being one of the country’s safest beaches due to the protection provided by a coral reef. The beach extends for 4 miles. The tropical forest surrounding the area gives you a chance to see Howler Monkeys and Sloths. We stayed at Hotel Las Brisas del Pacifico, which is located on Samara Beach, Guanacaste. We were fortunate to stay in the top bungalows which gave us a view of Samara Beach. In staying in the bungalows, don’t be afraid if you hear a deep howl or grunt over your roof. It's probably howler monkeys hanging around your bungalow. It wasn't surprising, around the hotel area, to see Iguanas as they were part of the landscape. The area is incredibly ... read more

After the exciting whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, our next destination is Arenal Volcano. We arrived at Hotel San Bosco which is located in La Fortuna. The hotel is nice, clean, and inexpensive. From the hotel, on a clear day you can see Arenal Volcano. Early in the morning, the volcano was partly covered by clouds and the weather was overcast, which made photographing it quite a challenge. Arenal Volcano is the only volcano in Costa Rica constantly active since it woke up after 400 years with the big 1968 eruption producing huge ash columns, explosions & glowing red lava almost every day. It is considered one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. It is 5478 feet high. We spent the late afternoon and evening at Tabacon Resort Hot Springs, a resort ... read more

Our first stop in the Monteverde / Santa Elena region was the Serpentarium (Snake Farm). It was quite an experience in more ways than one. There was a room full of nothing but Boa Constrictors in all sizes, shapes, and ages. I was so intrigued photographing them, that I wasn't aware of what I almost stepped on. I was backing up to take a photo when I heard this loud hissing that resembled a cat hissing. I turned around and looked, I was about to step on a pregnant Boa Constrictor. The old saying of "If Mama ain't happy, no one's going to be happy". In this case, this saying is true, because Mama to be wasn't too happy with me. It could've been worse, she could've given me a "squeeze". There were all kinds of ... read more

I picked Costa Rica for the whitewater rafting and also because it had the jungle and the beach. It's really the best of both worlds. Costa Rica has 800 species of ferns, 1,000 of orchids, 2,000 kinds of trees, and 200 species of mammals. I had a feeling that I was going to be in floral and fauna heaven. I was pretty much right! Costa Rica has the Caribbean on the east and the Pacific on the west. Costa Rica Has Nicaragua to the North and Panama to the South. My flight to San Jose took 3.5 hours. When you go to Costa Rica, San Jose is pretty much the starting point of your trip. San Jose has the infamous reputation as the ugly duckling of Central America. The city has some particularly good museums, most ... read more
