Central America Caribbean » Cuba February 19th 1989

This is a continuation (#3) of my putting our old travel journals onto this blog site. See previous ones: Guatemala 1988, which is the first in this series, and Costa Rica 1989 (w/Christmas in Cozumel, Mexico and last days in Guatemala), which is the second. Again, I am relying on photos I happened to have scanned and ones people have sent to me as I do not have access to my original photos. Thank you all who sent me photos - much appreciated! When we return to the states (this is being written in Germany where we are living this year) I'll add/substitute original photos. YOU CAN CLICK ON ANY PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT, THEN GO BACK TO THE JOURNAL OR GO THROUGH THE PHOTOS (CLICK ON THE NUMBERS AT THE TOP) IN THAT ENLARGED FORMAT. ... read more

No, your eyes do not deceive you, it does say 1988. As my project here in Germany, I’ve begun to go over our travel journals started in 1988 when we left Alaska for our first long adventure. We went to Antigua, Guatemala first to study Spanish, then traveled through Central and South America for about a year and one-half. So as to have an accurate, historical record of our journals, I’m re-typing them “as is” so to speak. Therefore, the narrative might only be interesting to those of you who want to know what it was like in these places so many years ago. Important note: I do not have access to my original photos, so am using newer ones (from our visit in 08) or ones I've scanned - plan to put in the original ... read more

It seems in Guatemala they are serious about their "no fly zones" around major Mayan artifacts like pyramids. I was in a DeHaviland Beaver (re; Ford truck w/ wings) doing a materials audit for the major petroleum corp. I worked for when the pilot mentioned (in Spanish) about our passing fairly close to one of the largest Mayan pyramids in S. America and did I want a look?? In my broken Spanish translation he made shooting gestures and I said "Sure! I'll hang out the window and shoot some pictures!" What I didn't know was he meant that any ground troops in the area would be shooting at us as their way of encouraging their "no fly zone" which was whatever was the range of their rifles around the pyramid. Funny how the are worried about ... read more

I had the privilege of volunteering on a construction team that was sent to Guatemala to rebuild churches after the massive 1976 earthquake. Although I am an engineer I didn’t have much actual construction experience after I left Thailand in July 1975; and even then I was the construction manager and didn't actually have to build anything. So for the couple months before the trip I took a bricklaying course with the adult education program at the local high school. By early March I was ready to go. 5 March 1977 Saturday. On a Saturday morning I flew from Washington Dulles to New Orleans to Meridian, Mexico to Guatemala City, arriving late afternoon. I was met at the airport by the missionary who was organizing the team. As there were others arriving from all over the ... read more
