Central America Caribbean » Guatemala November 19th 2000

The trip was wonderful mix of volcanoes, jungles, mayan ruins and lakes . I flew into Guatemala city and immediately went to Antigua, a spanish colonial city that is nestled between three spectacular volcanoes. The town has cobblestone streets, bougainvillae trees, terra cotta roofs and old church ruins and made it an ideal spot to start my vacation. Also, a fun place to practice my salsa moves ;-) One day, I went climbing volcan Pacaya with a guide and 10 other tourists. It was a exciting 4 hour hike. The guide wanted to abandon the climb after 1.5 hours due to heavy winds that day. Some tourists wanted their money back and continue to the top. After a lot of discussion, partly due to stupidity and partly mob mentality, we decided to ascend the volcano. It was ... read more

Frpm Guatemala, I made my way to the warm waters of the carribean. I took a bus into belize and a connecting boat to Ambergris/Caulker Cayes. Ambergris is the island used in FOX's "Temptation Island" show. It is a bit too touristy and commercial for me. I spent most my time in Caye Caulker. A small, very laid back island with fewer tourists and no traffic. Water is 75F and ideal for swimming. I spent one day diving around the Holchan Marine park. Saw several nurse sharks, sting rays, and plenty of tropical fish. But, the highlight of the belize was the a fastastic day of scuba diving at the Lighthouse reef, famous for the BLUE HOLE. It was made famous by Jacques Crousteau in late 70s when he dived here and said it was the ... read more

13 April 2000 Thursday. For the kids Spring Break we decided to fly to Puerto Rico. We all had an early start…3:30 am for Linda, 4 am for me and 4:30 am for the kids…in time for the taxi which arrived at 5 am. It was dark and cold; Rosanna was the only one to refuse to wear a jacket knowing that she wouldn’t need it where we were going…she is the stubborn one. We departed Reagan National at 6:30 am for Puerto Rico, via St Louis. We were using TWA frequent flyer miles so had to go through their hub…maybe that’s why they got eaten up by American…who wants to fly down the East or West Coasts via the middle of the country? Linda was surprised at the meager airline food…no surprise to me as ... read more
