... read more

The day after spending my birthday, I parted with Lake Atitlan and a great friend. It is amazing how emotional you can get leaving someone you have only known for a few weeks. I have had so many conversations with other travelers discussing the close connections you can make with people as you roam the world exploring unknown destinations. Many times I have found myself sharing hotel rooms with people I had just met on a bus ride 2 hours prior. With these same people, I would sometimes say goodbye to them the next morning, never seeing them again or find myself spending 90 percent of my day with them for the next 3 weeks. One friendship that I had made at the lake was so powerful, I shed tears as a result of my departure. ... read more

Today was a really good day for our class. First were the Birthday Cards for Shane. A little while ago my mom sent me an e-mail about a posting she had seen at the gym about a boy who was undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia and his only wish for his 8th birthday was to receive 35 million birthday cards, and break the world record. I thought it was a cute idea but didn't give it much more thought. That was, until I saw the groups created on Facebook, and then did some research and found ALL kinds of websites dedicated to the cause. I couldn't believe it. I also started recieving messages from friends in Canada saying that their entire school board was taking place in the event. This made me excited and I decided ... read more

I’m on Port Manning this week which means I’m supposed to stay on the ship. For safety reasons, we need to ensure that a certain number of crew/staff are onboard. So we’re on a 9 week rotation where you have to stay on the ship. But if you’re lucky, you can find someone who’s staying on the ship, switch IDs and get off anyway. Which I did yesterday and today. Yippee!! Especially because it’s Brooks’ final cruise, I really wanted to be able to spend time with him in the ports. Yesterday, Brooks, Brian and I went into downtown San Miguel, the city at the port on the island of Cozumel, Mexico. We did a TON of shopping. I spent a lot of money. But I got some fantastic gifts for lovely people back home and ... read more

Monkey See, Monkey Do, and Toucans too! Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Liberia By TicoTime May 3rd 2007 Church in Liberia This church is in the very centre of Liberia, adjacent to the park. It´s nice that they´re subdued and not over the top like the ones around home can be.Hello everyone! Hope all is well. Sorry but there won´t be photos for a bit, because this site only accepts 800x600 resolution and we have huge photos with no way to re-size them right now. Just a quick note from our last entry. I was a decimal or two off on the currency, and 1000 colones is actually about $2.25 CAN. Still, things are so cheap here. Today we woke up early by home standards, 6 am, to make it across the street for ... read more

Costa Rica is in the midst of a dire energy shortage. Hydro electric plants are running dry, thermal plants are breaking down, and we are losing power! Costa Rican Paper has the story here Reuters News has the story here This story talks about how it is affecting hotels (us) We have been dealing with rolling blackouts for two weeks, and a massive blackout a couple of weeks ago that left us without power for almost 6 hours two days in a row. With our new schedule being completely dependant upon the baby, blackouts in the middle of the night can make for long hours of keeping the baby happy in the dark. The problem here is th... read more

I am not actually on Caye Caulker, but I was yesterday and so for the sake on the map tracking thing I though I would post as if i were. City. The Island was about a 45 minute boat trip out form Belize City. Needless to say it was a rough ride, particularly after a heavy night with a Texan named Libby who drunk spirits like it was chilled water on a hot afternoon! The Island itself was very very small though teaming with travelers. Besides the fact it was tromendously expensive, I had a great time. Again like much of my trip so far it was a solitary event, and I wrote a new song while paddling in the tepid sea water. That was of course, untill the tiny fish took a real liking to ... read more
