Hola! A little entry to tell you that: After Xela we were around Lago de Atitlan. It's a MAJOR touristic location so for us it was quite a SHOCK. Sooooo many tourists, locals pushing to sell you stuff and all the possible restaurant and bars... But then, as we ate fairly BASIC since we are in Guatemala, we were VERY Happy to eat: Malaysian Curry Wood-oven-baked-Pizza Vegeterian Crepes Tofu-burgers Soyamilk Fruit shakes AND most important of all for Nadja: LATTE MACCHIATO and CAPUCINO's!!!!! Later on we decided to go to a more relaxed and "authentic" place: San Marcos La Laguna. But to our big surprise it was not authentic at all. On the contrary, it's some kind of Tourist-Gringo-New age -village. It's full of Meditation centers, Yoga cources, Moon Cources, Sun Cources, Massage Therapy, etc, etc... ... read more

Hola!!!!! Yesterday, we slept at the top of the huge Volcano, just next to the smaller active one, that you can see in the picture!!!!!!!!!!!! But let's go back a bit in time.... After the roughness of Huehuetenango, we went to still rough conditions to investigate about mining in Guatemala. But after that Nadja was completely exhausted, tired, fed up with bad sleeping, rotten beds, monotonous food, the cold and bad weather.... and it was also slowly getting to me, and I am here only 2 months, but for Nadja, it's for already 6 months that she is living in the most "basic" ways you can imagine. So we went to relax a few days on the beach in Mexico!!! It still took us 2 days to get there and even another day to get to ... read more

Here we are again in a city!!!!! Huehuetenango... It's so off the beaten track that it's not even listed in the region list of travelblog! And this is the city, we were HOURS away from here in the most remote villages of the Huehuetenango-region. Let's say it's "le trou du cul du monde". But it was a VERY interesting experience, living with the local indigenas, just as indigenas, with NO tourist facility. It's in these very villages that Nadja worked as a volunteer for 3 months. And now we were back for our trip, with some presents of chocolate from Belgium and a few pictures that Nadja took before. We were very welcomed by them , it was a very touching time. But let's go back in time a bit...and let me give you a bit ... read more

Hola Amig@s, So first Ì'll tell you that here they use the sign "@", to write o and a at the same time so: Amig@s = Amigas y Amigos! I was talking about a secret destination, well our "secret" guide did not show up!!! So we couldn't go and so we changed our plans and moved on to Coban. From there we went to Semuc Champey, wich are wounderfull pounds and waterfalls. We had also a contact person there, that could help us to meet local Qeq·chi indigenas, but we had soooo little time we could not do much. The area seemed very nice and we want to go back. Here in the city we have a lot of meetings with a lot of people to organize more of our trip. Every day we learn more ... read more

Hi All So after the BIG rains and Hurricane we went to see the great pyramids of Tikal and did a 7 day Trek in the Jungle, where we also saw loads of ruins. Now I have to tell you something Technical. We can only post pictures taken with the small camera, so youll see loads of jungle but not many pyramids, they are in the other camera! Anyway the trek was WOAW, though. We had a lot of: Mud, Mud, Mud, Mosquitoes, Ticks, scorpions, cockroaches, Tarentula, birds, Toucan, Froggs, toads, monkeys, rain, pyramids, heat, humidity, mold, smelly clothes We had none of: Comfort, Vegetables and Fruits, real showers, hotels, fan, beds, But it was great, we had some magical, strange experiences too: We saw 2 pumas although they are never together, we went through a ... read more

We have a few minutes b4 we will be leaving for Tikal, so Frederic is downloading some photos for the blog and I'm "allowed" to write on his blog. ;) As Frederic said, we have had 5 days of continuous PISS weather, but we were lucky that we only saw the rainy side of the tropical storm...! First, we spent a few days in Livingston, the Carribean side of Guatemala and a place where the Garifuna people live. Garifuna are black people (descendants of African slaves brought to the Carribean), but have a specific language and culture, different from other Carribean people and VERY different from anything I have seen in Guatemala up to now. Unfortunately, there is little opportunity to actually meet or be with "real" Garifuna in the town itself... most Garifuna have been ... read more

Hi! A quick note to tell you we had about 5 days of continuous tropical rain!!! There was a Hurricane with tropical depression in Costa Rica called Alma and apparently now there is one called Arturo in the Yucatan. We are just in the middle of these location so we got A LOT of rain! It started in Livingston, Carribean town. So we moved on hoping to avoid the rain but it is all over Guatemala and even in most of Central America. Today it seems dryer, but still between 85 en 99% of humidity and temperatures around 25 degrees. Voila, today we leave for Tikal as we can't keep waiting for the sun Foto's later Kisses from Frederic and Nadja... read more

Finaly, after 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days we are re-UNITED!!!! Today we went to the market and packed our bags to leave to the Caribbean: Livingston, the Garifunas of Guatemala. After that we'll go to Rio Dulce and the Jungle in Peten. So you might not hear fron us for awhile. Alles OK dus. Kusjes aan allen Frederic et Nadja aussi maintenant!!!!!... read more
