Is that a crater? Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Liberia By TicoTime May 2nd 2007 Are those craters??? No, but we still have no idea why the US farmers would have circular crops in square plots.Hola amigos y familia, Jenny and I are in Liberia (lee-bear-ee-ah to you gringos) enjoying the mellow vibe, humidity and warm weather. No rain yet, which is nice as the forecast we looked up online from home said thundershowers until at least Friday. Last night we hopped in a cab after breezing through customs at the airport and were briskly transported to the charming Hotel Liberia. The cab was 7,000 colones, though I got the impression that the driver would have taken less than what I had arranged with the English speaking dispatcher. Oh well. The room was 11,000 ... read more

¡Buenas chicos y chicas...! So...where were I?...

After 6 days on the mainland, in the rainforest, we finished up our last 3 remaining days on the beautiful sandy beaches of the Ambergris Caye, in San Pedro. The island is higher class than the rest of the mainland, and more Americanized. The water was clear blue and green and warm, like in the 70s. Absolutely picturesque. To get around on the island, everyone uses golf carts. The only real vehicles are taxi cabs and construction vehicles. Not as fast paced as our time in San Ignacio, but so nice. We spent most of the time lounging in chairs on the sand, sitting in the shade of palm trees. We did go snorkeling at Shark Ray Alley. It was amazing, we saw so many fish, sea turtles, stingrays, and nurse sharks. Lupe help a stingray, ... read more

We've been on Caye Caulker for the last few days now. just enjoying the island's slow pace and chillax atmosphere. On the way here the water taxi made a 5 second stop at Caye Chapel, which is an island that is just an golf course. you always here about these things and wonder if they actually exist. well they do-- for $1200 US a night. we're staying in a shack on the seaside with a rather sketchy dock. there is lots of shade to find (now that we are fairly sun burnt) and just enjoy the breeze and scenery. Yesterday we went on a full day snorkelling tour on a sail boat! it was lots of fun--- although I (Megan) was feeling slightly seasick, which was not so much fun. We snorkelled at the reef ... read more

Back in beautiful Boquete to fulfill one of our trips missions, volunteer work!! After talking to the owner of Spanish by the River in Boquete, while out in Bocas, we decided to head back in this direction to teach English at an after school program called Casa Esperanza, and for Adam to take some Spanish classes. Casa Esperanza is a program that serves the indigenous Ngobe Bugle population of Panama. It is an after school program for children who may otherwise be unable to attend school due to insufficient family funds. It was set up to decrease the level of child labor in Panama, and allow these amazing kids the chance to get an education. The program provides transportation to and from school, home, and Casa Esperanza. They offer classes in health, psychology, government, and ... read more

After La Tortuga Feliz, I caught up with Nathalie from the project, in San Jose. We took a long, windy, but beautiful ride up to Monteverde, where we (or at least I) screamed through 15 ziplines over the cloud forest, and I took the plunge on a Tarzan swing. We then caught up with 2 more volunteers, Patrick and Galina, in Arenal, where we went to the Baldi Thermal Springs. It was part of a tour - go to Volcan Arenal to see red hot lava pour down the side, then a relaxing dip in the springs. Unfortunately the weather was totally crap, pouring with rain... so the guides suggested that we go to the springs first and come back to the volcano later, when hopefully the weather had cleared up. My personal opinion was that ... read more
