As with everything else our first year here, Christmas has been a time of learning. Old traditions have been challenged and new ones given the test. Our Christmas tree is adorned, in the front yard. No tree inside this year nor stockings hung, anywhere. It's another year in transition. Noticeable this year is Callista's maturity. Her path has started from innocence to young adulthood. The way she looks at Christmas this year is not the same. Gone are the days of Santa Claus and my baby. We are not harassed by Salvation Army bell ringers, to our best recollection we heard only 5 Christmas songs this month. No Christmas cookies for friends and neighbors. Only one Santa sighting. We didn't hit the mall once for shopping. The lack of Xmas commercialism in our lives this year ... read more

Merry Christmas! Yes, I know I'm way behind on updating the blog, but remember I'm not a working stiff like you guys, so I try and stay away from the computer. Actually the few times I was in town and planned to do some updating the internet was down or really slow and photos take forever to upload in these fishing villages. On a side note, they really have internet cafes, I mean they serve coffee there, what a concept. Now I'm in Costa Rica, but flying to San Francisco tomorrow to spend Christmas with the fam. I had a free flight that I had to use or I was going to lose it. I'll be there probably about 2 weeks and then I'm planning to go to Australia. Nothing concrete right now, but will work ... read more

Wow, So its been ages since I have posted a blog, have been so busy doing stuff and I´ve now just arrived at a quiet little beach called Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica so thought i´d take my time now to write a little bit of what I´ve been up to. So first off Dougs has decided to leave me, a bad case of love sickness or home sickness, i can´t quite figure it out, no entiendo 'i don´t understand´, it makes no sense to me! So anyway we parted our separate ways a week ago, so i´ve been busy rafting and seeing the volcanos around San Jose. So a brief ittinery for you all, think i left off in antigua guatemala First we headed to Lagos de Atiklan, 10- Dec 'Santa Cruz´ 11th Dec ´San ... read more

Well we're finally here in paradise!! Two days have gone by quickly and we have already been quite busy and not to mention burnt. Yesterday we had a full day out on a sailboat with 13 others out to a beach on the pacific. We spent the afternoon snorkling out at a reef in the salty waters then had lunch on the beach. On our travels we saw dolphins playing at the front of the boat and sea turtles. We enjoyed a full 6 course gourmet meal by Rick the hotel owner. The rest of the night was spent enjoying the other guests company. Today is quite hot at 104 degrees and getting hotter as the day goes on. Tomorrow we will be off to Arenal to see the active volcano. Until then... buenos tardes!... read more

Hola amigos Well its great to finally have my vacation! 100 days on the ship and 45 in a drilling shack has finally paid out. My route has gone something like this. Arrived in San Jose on November 27 and quickly B lined it to the beach. Arriving in Jaco a few days later to find perfect waves and warm water. Jaco is costa rica's surf center and is the place to pick up a board and whatever else you may need. Once equitped it was off to Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Pinnesula to find a quite beach break and a good surf vibe. The friends i picked up in jaco were all keen on the area so we spent the next 6 days. Andy's a surf instructor from england with a super mellow personality. ... read more

Hi everyone, We have not updated the blog in a while because we were visting a place that didn't have the internet. To give you all a quick update, we had to leave Boquete early because Lucas got horrible alergies from something that was in the air there. The minute he walked outside he would start sneezing like crazy and his nose wouldn't stop running. So we decided that we needed to leave and headed back into Costa Rica. We spent the night in a really cute town just outside of the boarder called San Vito. The next day we headed to a town called Neily and spent one night there because we were supposed to take a bus early the next morning to the coast. On the way to Neily we saw our lives flash ... read more

Well, the trip has finally winded down to a close here in San Jose. What a journey it´s been. I feel like I´ve seen more in the past ten weeks than I have my entire life. From the friendliness of the locals, the organic beauty of the landscapes, the mystique of the ancient traditions; the trip has been both completely satisfying and hugely surprising. Half of me never wants to leave. He wants to forget the plane ticket home, and move south through Panama, hop to Latin America and tour the continent. Stay in one city for a month, really get to know the place, the people, and the life. He wants to finish school, well, later. There´s so much to see, so many increadible places that are only imaginable through impassioned stories from fellow backpackers. ... read more

This is the beginning of the dry season in Costa Rica and I´m told it has arrived earlier than usual this year. I always seem to pick the best times to arrive in this beautiful country. It proves once again that those who are pooped on by birds have the best luck. I finished The Zahir. I wasn´t really thrilled with the ending, however. I feel there was not enough accountability on Esther´s part, for the deterioration of her relationship with her husband. For a book that is supposed to be about spirituality, I was disappointed the author would use retaliation as a teaching method. "You did something I didn´t like so I´m going to do something you won´t like." I know it´s just a novel...I just expected more from a "spiritually enlightened" author and therein ... read more
