It’s been a long time since I made an entry. Last week my mother was in town, it was her first time visiting Costa Rica. It was a nice visit, but unfortunately she had to deal with our crazy day-to-day of not having a moment of peace, waking at 5:45 to jackhammers in the bathrooms and going to the hardware store 3-10 times a day! I think she enjoyed the trip, it’s just that she missed out on the touristy Costa Rica and in its place she was given the real Costa Rica. We wanted to go on one of the touristy trips one day, but instead we needed to purchase a replacement bathtub after the contractors broke one of ours. It was a nice visit for us though, and I’m glad my mother got to ... read more

Lately I've gotten into this blog thing, therefore, I really want to share my scuba diving adventure when I was in Costa Rica. I visited alot of the country. I tried scuba diving for the first time while I was in Manuel Antonio with Manuel Antonio Divers. It was so cool breathing underwater with all this equipment. The instructor was right there to offer all the help that I needed. I saw turtles out in the ocean, white tip sharks, zebra eels it was so cool. Now I will go ahead and get my certification so I can dive any where I travel in the world. Manuel Antonio Divers gave me my start and they really opened up a whole new world for me. The rest of the country is awesome, they have some great coffee ... read more

Sunday was another election day in Costa Rica. I believe this was the mayoral elections throughout the country. I could be wrong but all the signs we’ve see recently say “alcalde” and in my book that’s mayor. I had to look it up to settle a difference of opinion between Bill and I. He thought the name of all the people on the billboards was Alcalde. Yes, there are many common names throughout the country, like Smith & Jones or Gonzales & Ramirez in the states. I’m sure there is even a Juan Valdez in every town that by the way prefers Costa Rican coffee over Columbian. That’s a whole other blog. There was just no way I’d buy that every person running for election from Perez Zeledon to San Ramon was named Alcalde. The important ... read more

We came down to the Osa Pennisual to visit Nastassia's friend Kate (they worked in whistler together) who is teaching English just outside of Peurto Jiminez for a year. We met up with her and made some plans to venture into the wild Corcovado National Park to see some untamed jungle life. With a few tents rented, we caught a collectivo (truck taxi) to the park entrance and hiked 3kms down the beach to a beautiful campsite. From here we did two, one-day hikes; one down the rugged and very beautiful coast, the other into the jungle depths. Nastassia managed to contract a mysterious case of food poisoning on the second day (despite eating everything identical to us) and was quite out of commision. But needless to say we had a great time and saw lots ... read more

hey ... sorry for the lack of punctuation. im using a weird foreign keyboard and dont want to take the time to figure it out. after an almost cancelled flight due to an ice storm in dallas, i made it to warm and rainy san jose late thursday night. so far, its been a fun and eventful trip! yay, at least the ! key works! laura and james ceremony was one of the most beautiful and touching ones ive been to. at night, by candelight, surrounded by the jungle and their close friends and serenaded by the rapidly rising pacuare river. it really was very special and i am honored to have been witness to this special event. the lodge was first class. i stayed in a private bungalo that was quite luxurious. the chef prepared ... read more

To get to Costa Rica, the final leg of our voyage in Nicaragua consisted of a 10 hr overnight ferry ride to the southern end of lake Nicaragua. Luckly it didn't rain so Ben found a place to stretch out on the deck while Nastassia scored a bench all to herself inside. We even managed to catch a few hours of shut eye in between all the stops on the way down the lake. Three stops later we pulled into the town of San Carlos at the entrance to the Rio San Juan which drains Lake Nicaragua into the Caribbean. From here we cleared Nicaraguan immigration and then hopped aboard a smaller boat and went up the Rio Frio into Costa Rica. This was a cool ride, with spottings of turtles, monkeys, crocodiles and numerous birds ... read more

Ok where to start.... I guess the biggest change for me in 2006 was switching jobs. I still work at the same resort, Ocotal Beach Resort, but I have now taken on the responsibility of being the resorts environmental consultant. Pretty much my job is to assist the resort in making appropriate changes towards becoming more sustainable. It's a bit boring for me sitting in an office, but I do get to help make lots of positive changes for the environment and community. I still help out in diving when they are busy so that helps get me out of the office and back in the water. Other than that, not too much else is new around here. I have posted some pictures from throughout the past years. Whenever something interesting happens, if I take a ... read more

So I asked around town in Santa Teresa where all the hostels were and came across Tranquilo Backpackers. There also one in San Jose, not exactly cheap but $10 a night on that peninsula was cheap. After I settled in I borrowed some books and headed out to the beach. For the next few days all I did was sit at this resort called Luz de Vida cuz they had the hammocks on the beach. There was never anyone there using them so there would be days when all I did was sit from 11am till the sun set sometime at 5am. Every now and then I would get up and get in the water, then back to reading, then taking a nap or eating my snacks. My god it was soooo cool, I miss it ... read more
