Well, our New Years Eve meal was magnificent. It was us, Antigone & Patrick (2 geologists from Vancouver - I was in Volcano fan heaven), Maggie Jo & Tony (from England) and a couple from Boise (and formerly San Diego). It was a 5 course meal. We started on the patio with vodka and latkes with creme fraiche and caviar (sorry Gab - they outdid you). Then to the table for vegetable and champagne sangria with assorted dim sum. Our next course was fish ceviche with a pinot grigio. Then our main course of turkey with tamarind glaze, potatoes and green beans accompanied by a great Argentinian red. Finally we had a sugar cookie with the best chocolate souffle I've ever had with vanilla ice cream plus champage for toasting as we watched the ball drop ... read more

We never made it back out of our room at Las Orquideas. I finished my book though. :-) We were up early this morning. It was hard not to be, as our room was right next to the kitchen and breakfast started at 6:30 am. We were both up a lot in the middle of the night listening to the howling wind. It had been a long time since I had heard a windstorm like that. After a breadfast tipico (rice and beans, eggs, toast, coffee, guava jelly) we were on the road to Alajuela...which was just as bumpy on the way down. We were cranky (had to pee) by the time we got to (got lost in) Alajuela and found our hotel. I have to say, I have a new appreciation for all those Amazing ... read more

In Costa Rica we're preparing to blast in the New Year. The country doesn't ring in the coming year they use polvora, fireworks to explode into the next year. Fireworks are legal, even for purchase by children. I expect to hear the Red Cross ambulances along with the explosions tonight. As in the states, our plan is to be safely in our home and off the streets before night fall. No parties or guests for us this year, that’s the plan. As our circle of friends has begun to grow our time alone has dwindled, especially thru this holiday season. We’re looking forward to being alone and doing nothing for a couple of days even though we know it’s not likely to happen. I’m thankful for the friends we’ve made this year but as I’ve said ... read more

We celebrated the opening of our hotel last week. We had our first guests and everything went better than I could have ever imagined. Rachel’s food was spectacular, although it is clear that she’ll need help in the kitchen which I can offer now, and we’ll hire someone to do so in the future. All of the rooms and bathrooms were completely finished and considering what many of the hotels look like here, I am sure that our guests were pleasantly surprised. The first night that our guests were here, we stayed up after dinner playing pictionary. The following day I led a tour to La Paz and Poas, which took up a good portion of the day. Our guests decided to stay a little while longer to stay for an optional dinner that they purchased, ... read more

Our Nacho expedition came to a quick end when we mistakenly thought Joe's was closed for a company Holiday Party. Because clearly we had no idea it was Thursday and not Wednesday. From there we wandered to the much publicized Stella's, who demanded a reservation despite 90% of the tables being empty. We made a reservation for Friday night while we there. We ended up at Pizzeria Portofino (see, I wasn't kidding when I said that Ticos love pizza). They also love 80s music. Pretty much all we've heard since we got here is a steady mix of Kenny Loggins, Rod Stewart and Air Supply. I'm not sure what the fascination with 80s music is here, but it is EVERYWHERE. Seriously - it's like being transported to 1986. There are even mullets! Shudder. Post dinner was ... read more

ALAJUELA (Middle Costa Rica) - Thu 21/12 to Fri 22/12 We left San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua early on Thursday the 21st with 3 days to get to Puerto Viejo del Talamanca on the Caribbean (or East) coast for Christmas. We took a one hour bus back towards Managua (Nicaragua´s capital) & hopped off the bus at a cross roads. We hadn´t bothered to check on bus schedules as we were up & off very early. We were about 5 minutes there & were just asking ourselves how long would we be waiting when along comes a bus right to the border. The one great thing about central american buses is there are plenty of them, they may be cramped, stuffed, packed & all those kind of words but you never have to wait too long ... read more

Life at the beach is pretty much what we expected - hot, chill and gorgeous. We got up on the late side this morning, heading back to the Cabinas Cafe for an omelette, panqueques con banana and coffee. Mmmm. On the way back we stopped at Iguana Surf to rent a couple of boards. An 8'6" board for me and a 7 footer for Wes. We spent the morning surfing, although I spent more time falling off than standing up. But it was a good time. And great to be surfing in such warm water. Even in the summer San Diego surf isn't this pleasant. After a few hours we took a break and wandered down the beach. I got a tasty cherry snow cone con leche and Wes stopped in town to get a rashguard. ... read more

A knock on my door. I stir in my bed. As I rise to greet my mysterious caller I speculate on who it could possibly be. Scarlett Johansson perhaps, clutching a 38mm spanner, a couple of onion bhajees and a copy of the latest edition of Private Eye? My imagination continues to outpace all logical probablities as I visualise her handing over these precious treasures whilst whispering in a breathless voice loaded with festive anticipation "Excuse me these are for you Mr Pushonnorth"... A large cockroach scurries past and pauses momentarily to shake its head, it is almost as if its feelers can read my rather optimistic thoughts. I open the door, it is a nice old man. Although he is wearing a black shirt and a large crucifix around his neck for some reason he ... read more

Happy Holidays! Greetings from the sun, the sand and the surf! We are having a very different holiday experience than the one we are both used to back at home! So we finally met up with our good buddy Erik in a little surf town on the southern tip of the Nicoya Pennisula called Mal Pais/Santa Theresa (basically a gravel strip with shops all along it spread between two municipalities). We have been living it up as surf bums for almost the last three weeks. Life is pretty simple down here; eat, sleep and surf, which has caused the two of us absolutely no problems getting used to. We have met a bunch of excellent people while we have been here (Dave, Matt, Pedro, Laura, Shawna, CJ, Sophie, Gord, Andrew) and have enjoyed hanging out with ... read more
