A special thanks to everyone for the kind words posted to our blog over the past couple of months. we have been getting a kick out of them and apologize for not being able to respond individually... we simply haven´t learned how. i know, sad. recent event.... with all of the memorable new year´s we have had in seattle, this year we were blessed to have seattle delivered to us in costa rica. colin, keith, mel, paul, howie, micah, and lalo made the journey down to enjoy tropical drinks on the beach as an alternative to the blustery northwest weather. the week flew by with each day packed full of sand and surf followed by evenings of catching up over bottles of imperial and pilsens. for us, the simple joy of sleeping in real beds with ... read more

All the exercise from the day before wiped me out. I lasted long enough for a quick dinner at the Lava Rocks Cafe (yummy casados pollo), and promptly got back to our room and passed out. This morning we had eaten and packed up the car by 8:30, hoping to get an early start on things. In a fitting conclusion to our time at Arenal we were treated to our best views of the volcano yet on our way out of town. We pulled off the road to find that we could finally see an eruption - boulders rolling down the steamy side of the volcano. That must be what we heard a few nights ago. It was a great site. The second active volcanic eruption I've seen. Pretty cool. The drive from La Fortuna to ... read more

Our friends Will, Mark and Ruth came to visit from Atenas so we could take them to the thermal waters with us. Callista and I've been anxious to get back for another volcanic mud mask and facial. We pass thru the town of Zarcero on the way to the hot springs so we stopped to stretch our legs. The last time our friends passed thru it was cloudy so they didn't get to see all the beautiful topiaries. The topiaries we strung with lights this time but we visited during the day and didn't get to see them lit up. We'll make a point of visiting at night next Christmas, I bet it's spectacular all lit up. At the thermal waters we began talking to other foreigners which is natural for us. We like listening to ... read more

Today was the fabled "Christmas Present Biking Trip." We met our Bike Arenal guide, Hector (or maybe Edgar, we weren't sure), at the front desk at 8 am and picked up a couple of teenagers at the Montana de Fuego hotel. From there the four of us were driven out to the turnoff into Arenal National Park where we began our bike ride. The terrain was a little rough - mostly small hills with lots of rocks and bumps (and the trademark Costa Rican potholes). But the bikes were great and helped minimize the jolts. Everyone was patient with me as we travelled to El Castillo, and then on the river and back to our picnic spot. We enjoyed bananas, watermelon and wafers at the edge of Lake Arenal with a nice view of the (still) ... read more

Hi everyone There is not much to tell, except that I am still having a blast back in Santa Teresa and enjoying spending more time here with friends. Im currently living and working at the Funky Monkey Lodge. The house we had paid for happened to be moved in by a bunch of other people while I was in Ecuador and my friend was in Mexico. The landlord seemed to think he could get away with the two sets of rent. Hah. We let it go anyway because we got offered jobs at Funky Monkey straight away and are able to live there for free. There is a wonderful atmosphere there. I work with 3 other girls and we share reception jobs. Basically all I do is hang out with the guests! We join them every ... read more

We awoke early this morning to a steady amount of rain. Neither of us slept very well - our AC didn't work and it was hot, humid and (due to the wide open window) buggy. We both woke up with a fair amount of welts. We ran straight to the car to start our day only to discover that I had left the lights on (where are those annoying car warning sounds when you need them?!?!?!?!?) and the battery was dead. Deader than dead. Attempts at jumping the car failed, as no one had jumper cables except the hotel next door, but they were with their car a few hours out of town and not due to return anytime soon. Christmas morning car problems = bad timing. We tried pushing and starting it that way, but ... read more

Hello everyone...sorry to take so long to send some pics but this travel blog is very slow and we lost some pictures as well. On Christmas day in the early morning hours we got into our canopy flying fatigues (just like you were sky diving) and had one hell of a ride through the rainforest. Gary and Dani loved the excitement and the view. Darlene screamed all the way. After a quick lunch we headed to another place for an ATV four wheeling tour. It was fantastic. We were taken through lots of rough terrain, rivers, huge mud holes - Dani gave it the gas to spray as much mud on us as she could! It was two hours of fun. The next morning we headed to LaPaz Waterfall Gardens and Peace Lodge. The scenery was ... read more

Today I was weatherstripping the new front doors of the hotel. I realized after a while that I was not working alone. I had attracted a teeny tiny friend standing on the sidewalk next to me watching my work-I can only assume that he wanted to see if I was doing a good job :)Unfortunately for him, now that the weatherstripping is up, he's locked outside! I put him on a rock a bit farther from the doors and he seemed to be just fine with the new accomodations Orchid Lodge's Website - http://www.theorchidlodge.com Click here to read our blog - http://blog.theorchidlodge.com... read more

As part of the Best. Christmas. Present. Ever (oh fine, it ties with the ticket to Tokyo I got last year) I am finally in Costa Rica with Wes. So far it has already been an adventure, starting with our quest to find parking at LAX. Lot B? Full. "Please drive to Lot C." Lot C? Also full. At that point we give in, drive to my office and have a taxi pick us up there. Frustrating, but ultimately will save us money on parking, so we get over it pretty quickly. On the plus side, we left 5 hours early to try to get seat assignments together, so we had some time to spare. Unfortunately, it was not the only hiccup in our departure. As soon as we get to the ticket counter the AA ... read more
