Hey guys I hope you are all well. I can finally send you all some photos and catch you up on whats been happening since the last blog. In brief (email me if you want more details and dont forget to tell me your news too!!): I moved out of Funky Monkey around new years after finding a lovely house to rent in Santa Teresa. At the same time I started a serious relationship with my friend Randall (a tico guy) who at the time worked in a friends bakery there. Things are fantastic with him and we are together all the time. Meanwhile the shine of santa teresa was wearing off as high season became busier and busier, more drama and gossip developed than anyone could handle (there was even a massive street brawl incited ... read more

Hi everyone There is not much to tell, except that I am still having a blast back in Santa Teresa and enjoying spending more time here with friends. Im currently living and working at the Funky Monkey Lodge. The house we had paid for happened to be moved in by a bunch of other people while I was in Ecuador and my friend was in Mexico. The landlord seemed to think he could get away with the two sets of rent. Hah. We let it go anyway because we got offered jobs at Funky Monkey straight away and are able to live there for free. There is a wonderful atmosphere there. I work with 3 other girls and we share reception jobs. Basically all I do is hang out with the guests! We join them every ... read more

Ive made it back home to Costa Rica and will update you even if you dont want it, since I have free internet in San Jose. :) Well, what a mission! It started yesterday in Ecuador when I picked up my new passport (after the other one was stolen). My credit card hadnt arrived yet but they can send that to me in Costa Rica. Anyway, they were all doom and gloom at the South African consulate, telling me if I didnt go to Ecuador immigration to get my entry date stamped into my new passport, I would be fined $300 USD at airport immigration. Thats cool, I tracked down immigration early the next day (the day I was flying out) and managed to charm the officer into giving me a new stamp on the spot. ... read more

I feel like such a loser keeping on updating you guys with no photos but I´m bored so like to write, and dont worry those pics are being developed right now! The last few days I´ve been travelling Ecuador, seeing the most popular parts of the central Andes bit. Otavalo, north of Quito, was a fantastic couple of days in which I splashed out at a truly beautiful hostel ¨Cabañas el Rocio.¨ For those of you visiting Ecuador, stay here even for just a night - it´s worth it with its authentic brick and wood buildings, stunning views of the mountains and welcoming hospitatility. Of course I visited the famous Otavalo markets on a Saturday, their biggest day. Wow, it´s not an exaggeration, they are HUGE! Taking up blocks and blocks of the town. As always ... read more

How did I come to be staying inside a volcanic crater?? Well, I walked a few kms up the side of a mountain close to Mitad del Mundo, came to a ridge, looked down into a pit of cloud, then descended 300m along an extremely steep, rocky, path into the crater - and discovered it housed a bunch of farms and a lovely hostal. This crater is called ¨Puluahua¨ and is one of only two craters in the world that are inhabited (the second is in Japan). Puluahua crater was formed after an eruption 2000 years ago. The volcano is still considered active today. It is pretty stunning to look at. This morning the sky was bright blue, interrupted by the crisp outlines of one green mountain after another, and rays of sun bounced all over ... read more

La Mitad del Mundo city and monument are not as exciting as you´d think really. Most interesting was tagging along on a tour at the ethnographic museum and learning about the diversity of Ecuador´s indigenous cultures. From hispanic fishermen to afro-ecuatorians to amazonians to chino highlanders. Its amazing the differences and the histories. So after spending a pretty boring time at Cuidad De La Mitad del Mundo, I had an awesome tour at the real middle of the world (calculated by GPS) museum. I had an amazing guide and learnt so much. 1. The ancient incas of ecuador built a temple exactly in the middle of the world long before the French built their monument. The french got it wrong by 200m. The incas got it right by observing patterns of the sun. exactly in the ... read more

2 days ago - the day after I arrived in Ecuador - I was walking down a popular tourist street in Quito city with my backpack - complete with all my belongings expect my clothes. I felt something drip onto my shorts as I walked but ignored it until a man came up and said ´excuse me, you have something on your shorts, can I help you remove it?´ I was surprised he would bother but was like, um... ok. He pulled napkins out of his pocket and told me to look behind me at where the stain was. I turned, and suddenly my backpack is whipped away by another guy who jumped into a car with it and drove off. That was it. The first man disappeared into thin air and I watched all my ... read more
