Nineteen of us left Salt Lake City early on March 31st for four days of backpacking in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. This is one of the most popular backpacking spots in southern Utah and the perfect place to take a large group as there was plenty of water. In fact, we hiked through water for most of the trip and if you think you can try avoiding the water, think again. Avoiding stepping into water is not an option on this hike. Make sure to wear a very sturdy pair of ventilating boots. I have a pair of Merrill Moab Ventilators that drain water very quickly and also dry very quickly. The first race of the Marine Corps Marathon Series is the Irish Sprint, which I ran last year and felt no need to do again (flying 2,000 miles to run 6 is really only something I needed to do once...) but friends were running it (or were supposed to) and so I registered and once I've registered for a race, it takes a great deal for me to miss it, whether my friends end up running or not. It's really hard to say exactly why I do some of the things I do. I think I get restless without something to look forward to and suddenly I'm jaunting off to parts unknown. Such is the case with this spontaneous trip to Sydney. With a string of days off and nothing to do, (at least nothing that I wanted to do), I found myself searching flights to see where I could go. Oahu was at the top of the list since I've yet to climb the Haiku Stairs and after a years worth of running, this seemed like an excellent time to get to the top without too much trouble. Today was the 36th annual Marine Corps Marathon and my sixth and final marathon of the year. With D.C. being at sea level one would think running this race would be a piece of cake after running four of my marathons this summer between 4,500 and 10,000 foot elevation. Nothing could be further from the truth. It was a tough race with temperatures at the start near freezing. Though dry, it was bitter cold and the wind was brutal. The large group I was running with huddled together for warmth and we were all grateful when the sun came up and the race finally started. The weather could not have been better and the course was beautiful. We ran around what is known as the Emerald Necklace, a series of lakes around Boston through residential neighborhoods with enormous brick homes. Spectators were scattered around the course cheering us on and the last mile of the course cut right through the Boston Zoo, past the giraffes and zebras. I don't usually miss much when I'm running because I carry a camera and am always looking for something awesome to shoot, but my friend Mike didn't even see the giraffes and zebras and ran right past them! Two weeks is not enough recovery time between marathons. Thankfully, it's over and I can take a whole week off before heading out to Boston to run the BAA half. Today is also the day I finished the Grand Slam, having finally completed St. George, which was the 4th marathon in the series, so I actually left St. George with two medals today. The St. George Marathon is one of the most well organized races I've ever run. Everything, except the scorching weather, was flawless and every aid station was fully stocked with food/water/sports drinks and first aid items. I've never run a race before where there was so much food offered on the course. Thunder, lightning, pouring rain and hail. By mile 10 everyone was drenched. It reminded me a lot of the LA Marathon I ran in March of this year. I would have put that one at the top of my "worst marathons ever" list had it not been for the group of friends I was running with. This marathon, however, I ran alone and with the miserable conditions and nobody to talk to, I'd have to say it wins "worst marathon" award. Only because of the weather, of course, because the scenery through Blacksmith Fork Canyon was/is spectacular. There were a couple of noteworthy moments during this marathon that you might find interesting to read about. 24,773 Miles 52.5 Flight Hours 9 Airports 5 Airlines 6 Countries Over the next few days I'll post the details along with photos from each country, but a summary post is definitely in order...this was a big trip. I started in Salt Lake on August 13th and was able to get business class on the Delta Tokyo flight. We left Salt Lake over 3 hours late which caused me to miss the Singapore flight so I spent about 22 hours in Japan, which was quite fortuitous as I had wanted to visit Japan and just had never found the time. As most of the passengers missed connecting flights, the information counter at the airport suggested a hotel nearby for a decent price and most of us went there. Kingdom of Bahrain 2011

We had only 22 hours in Bahrain, but it was plenty of time (assuming we were willing to forgo a bit of sleep) to see a few of the more popular sights. We arrived late at night and by the time we got to our hotel (The Diplomat Radisson, close to the airport) it was after midnight. The flight from Kuala Lumpur was over 3,700 miles and took nearly 8 hours, but Gulf Air seems to be a nice airline and once the flight attendants knew I was a sister flight attendant, I received first class service, even in coach. It would be awesome if I could one day return the favor! The Gulf Air flight attendants are wonderful and their uniforms are flawless, right down to their beautiful hats. We flew Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur to Bali. I spent the time finishing a book I had been reading and MaryAnne watched a movie. Three hours later we landed in Bali. We were met at the airport by a driver from the Mara River Safari Lodge and after swerving in and out of heavy traffic for an hour, we finally arrived at our destination. Traffic is horrific in Bali and the primary mode of transportation is motorbike. Motorbikes are everywhere and it appears an entire family will ride around on them and though helmets are required for the motorbike operators, they appear to be optional for small children.
