Uruguay - 25 Days 3 Dec - 11th Dec 2004 I intended to spend Christmas in Buenos Aires but was a bit early to go straight there so I decided to visit Uruguay with a friend and take the ferry across to Argentina. On the 3rd of Dec we took the night bus from Rosario, Argentina to Rosario, Uruguay continuing straight on in the morning to Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia was a nice enough place, cute streets and buildings so we stayed a couple of nights until heading to Montevideo for another couple of days exploring. We found nice colonial buildings and statues like most capitals have. From Montevideo my friend went home and I went to the Benidorm/Acapulco style Punta del Este, for a few days, to enjoy all tourist facilities. Whilst here I hired ... read more

ola' todo bem, (hello, how are you) Today celebrates our our first week in brazil and we feel like little sponges soaking up everything possible. Right now we are at a place called the "Sitio" which is a mountian home of our friends that we have been visiting in brazil. It is a beautiful house in the middle of a valley near the city of petroplis. Prior to coming to Sitio we spent 6 glorious days wondering around Rio and discovering its many wonderful places. One of the days we did as so many cariocas (what people from rio known as) do, and spent the day at the beach both of getting a bit to much sun. On another, we walked for about 7 hrs around a giant lagoon and then to the Jardim Botanical which ... read more

Ten of us took a wonderful trip to Iguassu Falls and the Argentina rain forest with a fascinating stay at Yacutinga Lodge. I arranged the trip with Adventure Life Vacations. We had wonderful guides on the trip who enhanced our visit with their history and nature knowledge of the area. We stayed at the Sheraton Iguassu that was adjacent to the Argentina side of the falls, where most of the falls are located. The hotel was comfortable and had a couple of nice restaurants. We also enjoyed the outdoor patio that provided a view of the falls. We spent one day hiking to all of the falls area, and then took the short boat ride across to Devil's Island, which allowed an up close view of the falls. We spent another day taking the jet boat ... read more

The Carretera Austral is a dirt road that extends for more than 500 miles from Chaiten to Coyhaique. The scenery is stunning and the region some of the wildest countryside I´ve ever passed through. I wish I had been able to stop and take better photos. I took most of these while the van I was riding in was moving. Magnificent Miles! ... read more

we arrived in arequipa, peru{s second largest city, on gwbs inauguration day. just to let all of you know, he is a total douchebag and is a terrible representative for our country. those who believe the contrary are simply wrong. now, to continue, arequipa is a beautiful city. the plaza de armas is one of the prettiest central squares i have ever seen in my life. all the buildings are made of this white volcanic stone that was spit out by the el misti volcano which towers over the town. we found a cool little hostel, hostal nuñez, for 20 soles per person. there we had the joy of watching gwbs spectacular oratory on cable. in the city itself we didn{t do much besides walk aaround, look at hot college girls, drink too many tequilas and ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Ilha do Mel January 19th 2005

After a disappointing "scenic" train journey from Curitiba we hopped on a bus to Paranagua to get a boat to Honey Island or Ilha do Mel. On the way we met up with an Australian guy and an American girl who were staying at the same hostel as us, the Hostel Zorro in Encantadas town. As it was raining on the island when we arrived (it seems to rain more than it does in Ireland in Brazil at this time of the year) we decided to play a drinking game that Becky, the American 21 year-old university student, devised. Two bottles of cachaca (pron. cashasa, Brazillian firewater used in caipirinhas) went down surprisingly quickly and meant the next day was pretty much a write-off. Becky was up and about for breakfast at about 8am, knocking on ... read more
