Flight: Quito to Baltra, TAME 191 (320) Hotel: Onboard the Xpedition, Cabin 502 Yet another early start this morning as our flight to the Galapagos departed at 7:30. All the cruise passengers were milling about in the lobby of the Marriott; we decided to beat the crowds and grabbed a taxi to the airport. The domestic terminal at Quito was pretty small, only a couple of gates. There was a Celebrity representative waiting at the airport already, after having our bags inspected by the agriculture station to make sure you don't bring in any fruits/vegetables, she took our bags and checked us in; they would take care of the bags on the other end and deliver them to our cabin. The flight was on TAME on a brand new A320, an all-economy configuration. Normally, TAME only ... read more

We woke up after a rather poor nights sleep at the hostel. we had drank a few glasses of pisco sour and the altitude didn´t help. a side note on the altitude. now, after a day and a half of acclimatization i am feeling better, but it was rough yesterday. the slightest exertion of energy left me short of breath, and a nagging headache didn´t help matters. cuzco is at 10,600 feet or so, which is apparently childs play compared with other places we will be visiting such as potosi, the world´s highest city, or some of the trekking routes we plan to explore. but some acclimatization and a little coca in the mouth will soothe things. today we took a bus to pisac to visit a pretty touristy market. there they had fruits, vegetables, coca, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba January 8th 2005

We decided to go to Córdoba because you could fly direct from there to Iguazú - and it was also in that general direction. Other reasons were: * We didn´t want to go back via Buenos Aires - seemed a bit silly for some reason * The bus journey was about 23 hours from Mendoza to Córdoba * The flight was only 300pesos, and if we went to Córdoba we would see an extra place too * Córdoba had a fierce reputation for being a better party city than BA and we didn´t get to party properly in BA So, the plan was laid after a bit of research and we arrived by bus to Córdoba early in the morning, and took a taxi to our pre-booked hostel. Unfortunately there had been some jiggery-pokery with the ... read more

After our little detour to Queens we finally arrived, a day later than expected, to Cuzco. The flight from JFK to Lima was long and i ddin´t get much sleep. LAN does have good service though, the food was good and there were plenty of movies and video games to keep me occupied during the long night of little sleep. Lima was hot, but we only had a 3 hour layover there, thank god. we were accosted immediately upon emerging from customs, but enough ¨dejame en paz¨s were sufficient to shoo them away. the flight from lima to cuzco was the best flight i have ever been on. it was beautiful. we saw incredible topography, and even some snow capped mountains. this part of peru looked very sparsely populated and virgin, very unlike what i remember ... read more

Well it's a bit late but I haven't really been in computor-mood over the last couple of weeks, more enjoying the 30+degree temperatures, the pool, the food, the company and the parties... I was going to go to Buenos Aires for New Years and wait around there for my flight but after meeting up with all my old friends and getting settled back into their well suited lifestyle it was sort of a no brainer to decide to stick out the rest of my time in South America with the people I love the most on this Continent. We had an absolutely great christmas with all the cousins and uncles and aunties which was fantastic, 2days of non-stop partying, eating and swimming at Uncle Hugo's gorgeous house. Then we shot of to Santa Fe which is ... read more

Hotel: Sonesta Posada del Inca Cusco (Cuzco, Peru) We had booked the tour to the Sacred Valley, Pisac and Ollantaytambo for the day. We had missed the main Pisac market on Saturday, but they still have smaller markets on other days of the week. The Sacred Valley is a very fertile valley along the Urubamba river that was the homeland of the Inca. Over 1000 varieties of maize were at one time grown in the valley. We visited the Pisac ruins, then stopped for a buffet lunch. When we arrived at Ollantaytambo, there was an Epiphany festival going on, with people dressed up as cariactures of the conquistadores. I had already seen the Olla ruins previously, and both my wife and I were feeling ruined out at that point , so we decided to stay in ... read more

Train: Aguas Calientes to Cuzco Hotel: Sonesta Posada del Inca Cusco (Cuzco, Peru) $65 We woke up very early this morning to catch the first bus up to the ruins. It was looking like it was going to be a gorgeous day, with a clear blue sky. When we arrived in the ruins, the first Inca trail hikers were just starting to arrive. We ran into the Swedish girls again that we had met on the Colca trip, one of them was in pretty bad shape from the hike. I had done the hike on my previous trip; it's by far the most strenuous undertaking I've ever done.. the main problem was the altitude. We had breakfast in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary hotel, which is run by the Orient Express group. It's the hotel that's actually ... read more

We arrived in Mendoza after travelling all night from Buenos Aires. The local tourist information office referred us to a hostel called Lifehouse which had a pool. This was very welcome, Mendoza was baking! We chilled for the rest of that day and decided to do a wine tour the next day and a hike the day after (to get rid of some of the post-Christmas podge). Wine 1-01 After some admin stuff in the morning (sorting out buses, planes, accomodation for the next leg) we headed off on our tour of two bodegas (vineyards). The first bodega, Lopez was a factory bodega. When we arrived a huge lorry with a huge tank (not unlike a milk lorry!) was leaving filled with wine. The bodega had a small museum of machinery used in wine making, ... read more

Train: Cuzco to Aguas Calientes (http://www.perurail.com) Hotel: Aquas Calientes (Machu Picchu, Peru) A very early start at 5:45AM as we had to get to the train station for Machu Picchu. The train is the only way to get to the ruins now, unless you hike in on the Inca trail. We had the hotel pack us a couple of lunchboxes for the trip. We planned on spending the night in Machu Picchu village, to spend more time in the ruins after all the tourists had left. The train station was complete chaos, with hundreds of tourists milling about, we managed to lose our tour guide who hadn't yet told us which hotel we were staying at! The Vistadome tourist trains are brand new, with panoramic windows on the roof, as most of the trip is spent ... read more
