The blogs are coming through thick and fast now. No sooner was I leaving Buenos Aires, I was heading to Uruguay. Uruguay, or "The Republic East of the Uruguay River", to give it its official and needlessly strung out name, is sandwiched between the South American powerhouses of Argentina and Brazil (and to the East of the Uruguay River). It is the second smallest sovereign state in South America, after Suriname, although no-one really knows Suriname exists (French Guiana is also smaller, but is still officially a French territory. Hence; Which country has the longest land border with France? Answer: Brazil) Conveniently enough for me, Uruguay is positioned on a route between Buenos Aires and Iguazu National Falls, so made an ideal stop for some much needed tranquility after the hecticity of a week in BA. ... read more

Currently we are in Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. But let´s update you first on our last great days in Buenos Aires, where we are still going to return twice in the coming weeks ! So Buenos Aires, definitely a city to check out ! We walked for hours and hours through several interesting neighbourhoods. Palermo Viejo is an artistic, charming part of the city with lots of trendy galeries, bars and restaurants. It´s also called Palermo Soho and for sure it has a feel of NYC ! Of course a tango-show was part of our program ! (we still need to do the classes...). We met a Mexican guy who had taken his very cute, 82-year old mother to BA for Mothers day. They gave us many good advices for survival ... read more

Katharine and I decided to head to Colonia, a little town in Uruguay for the weekend. We left on a friday evening by the fast ferry/boat called 'Buquebus' which was the most luxurious ferry I have ever sat on. I made us a little picnic basket and we had a nice 1.5 hour ride to Colonia eating blue cheese and pesto salad and sipping wine..... ...We checked into Posada Los Pinos, a little cozy bed and breakfast located in the centre of town. It came with breakfast and would have been perfect if not for the scanty looking toilet and a few bed bugs from the blankets! Katharine had been to Colonia earlier this year and knew the place and became my personal tour guide over the next 2 days. Colonia, a little town of streets ... read more

Hi, Finally finally finally i´ve managed to get my email account back! So you´ll now no longer be receiving desperate pleas for money from me in Nigeria!! I only hope that no one actually fell for that.... Well as it happens this is my last full day in Buenos Aires, so I decided to go away to Uruguay if that makes sense... to a place called Colonia (3 hours by slow ferry and 50 mins by catamaran from BA). Well it sure seems like it might be a nice place - very tranquil and old worldy. Unfortunately the heavens opened today and i´m reduced to sitting in an internet cafe. I did see some incredbly large fossilised armadillo shells in a museum and did the entire spanish conquest of uruguay in 5 mins (on account that ... read more

Hello all I found the best steak of my life but not in Argentina as expected but in Uruguay. It was only me and seb in Uruguay as dan decided to head to BA early. Got on an overnight bus to the capital-Montevideo, but then straight away got on a bus to the colonial town os Colonia del Sacremento. Got there allrite and we had a hostel in mind, got into a taxi who ripped us off but it was still under a pound, they have a different payment system, on the meter it counts tarrifs, but we thought it was the amount in peso´s- so an argument with the taxi driver was a bit inevitable. Anyway got to the hostel and decided to get a map and do the walking tour around the colonial ... read more

Uruguay wasn't on the list of places to go when we first organised our trip. We hadn't even considered it until a week ago, but we'd met many people who said that it was a beautiful country. So we couldn't resist. We originally went down to Buquebus to organise a boat trip with Nick, but because of the public holiday, most of the trips were booked out, so unfortunately for Nick, we had to go later, and he missed out. The good news was Lia and I got to spend a weekend away on our own, away from 8 bed dorm hostels with snoring, late night drunken wake ups, and other regular hostel behaviour that we won't go into.
